Book Synopsis Water Supply Systems by : Cedo Maksimovic
Download or read book Water Supply Systems written by Cedo Maksimovic and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-11-06 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technology now affects almost every aspect of Water Supply Management, Operation, Planning and Design; the speed of development means that assessing what is "new" is sometimes difficult. Old ideas can now be applied because of new technology; technology is now revealing problems that were unnoticed 10 years ago. Some emerging technologies promise much but are still underdeveloped for use in real world conditions, while we should always remember that "new" technology depends upon the state of development in respective countries, a point which is particularly relevant to the NATO Advanced Study Institute, for which this book has been produced. Thus our objective in producing the book has been to highlight, in a wide range of technical areas, where and how technology is being applied, what is "new" and what the limitations of these technologies are in the real world. We have also tried to provide an European and American perspective where possible to illustrate how problems are tackled in different cultural environments. It is probably true that "technology" is also somewhat dependent upon the political, economic and organisational climate in different countries and we have included a chapter covering these aspects.

Book Synopsis Sustainability Guidelines for the Structural Engineer by : Structural Engineering Institute. Sustainability Committee
Download or read book Sustainability Guidelines for the Structural Engineer written by Structural Engineering Institute. Sustainability Committee and published by Amer Society of Civil Engineers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sustainability Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineer s Structural Engineering Institute (ASCE SEI) prepared these guidelines to advance the understanding of sustainability in the structural community and to incorporate concepts of sustainability into structural engineering standards and practices. This book will educate and guide structural engineers as they meet the challenge to design and construct a sustainable built environment. The guidelines are organized into five sections: Sustainable Design and Construction, Sustainable Strategies, Building Materials, Infrastructure, and Case Studies. Although many of the subjects presented are related, each section and the related subsections have been written to stand alone, allowing this report to be used as a practical reference. This report was written for structural engineers, but related disciplines will also benefit from the contents. The book includes an important section on infrastructure because, many of the concepts and ideas presented in this guide relate to infrastructure, as well as design and construction.

Performance characteristics include allowable internal pressure, external load capabilities, hydraulic resistance factor, wave speed, allowable leakage rates, and water quality tolerances. Installation and maintenance criteria include specifications; tapping methods; repair methods; installation, backfill, and protective requirements; and useful life. Information about common standards, industry groups, and reference publications is also included. This Manual of Practice (MOP) pertains to the following types of pipe: concrete, welded steel, ductile iron, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pressure, polyethylene profile wall, PVC and polypropylene profile wall, corrugated polyethylene, fiberglass, corrugated metal, and vitrified clay pipe and clay drain tile. Design engineers, utility managers, planners, and educators will find MOP 125 to be an essential reference for designing, installing, and maintaining pipelines that convey water and drainage.

Track and analyze productivity on construction projects, and quantify additional costs resulting from productivity losses. Select the right experts and attorneys should litigation or arbitration occur, and employ credible and reliable methods of analysis. Solve problems on the project instead of incurring lengthy and costly litigation or arbitration.
Book Synopsis Trenchless Installation of Conduits Beneath Roadways by : Tom Iseley
Download or read book Trenchless Installation of Conduits Beneath Roadways written by Tom Iseley and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1997 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to geologists; geotechnical, construction, and maintenance engineers; other state department of transportation (DOT) personnel involved with the planning, design, and permit issuance for conduits beneath roadways; local transportation agencies; utility contractors and consultants; and trenchless construction equipment manufacturers. It describes the current state of the practice for the use of trenchless technology for installing conduits beneath roadways. Trenchless construction is a process of installing, rehabilitating, or replacing underground utility systems without open-cut excavation. The synthesis is focused on trenchless technology for new installations. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the trenchless installation technologies (methods, materials, and equipment) currently employed by state DOTs and other agencies to install conduits beneath roadways. The synthesis presents data obtained from a review of the literature and a survey of transportation agencies. For each technology identified, information is provided to describe the range of applications, basis for technique selection, site specific design factors to be considered, relative costs, common environmental issues, and example specifications. In addition, information on emerging technologies and research needs is presented.

Book Synopsis A Journey Round My Room by : Xavier de Maistre
Download or read book A Journey Round My Room written by Xavier de Maistre and published by . This book was released on 1871 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1790, Xavier de Maistre was 27 years old, and a soldier in the army of the Sardinian Kingdom, which covered swathes of modern-day Northern Italy and Southern France. He was placed under house-arrest in Turin for fighting an illegal duel. It was during the 42 days of his confinement here that he wrote the manuscript that would become Voyage autour de ma chambre. Inspired by the works of Laurence Sterne, with their digressive and colloquial style, de Maistre decided to make the most of his sentence by recording an exploration of the room as a travel journal. de Maistre’s book imbues the tour of his chamber with great mythology and grand scale. As he wanders the few steps that it takes to circumnavigate the space, his mind spins off into the ether. It parodies the travel journals of the eighteenth-century (such as A Voyage Around the World by Louis de Bougainville, 1771), and could be read today as an early take on the modern vogue for “psychogeography” — each tiny thing that he encounters sends de Maistre into rhapsodies, and mundane journeys become magnificent voyages.
