Download or read book Groundwater Fluxes Across Interfaces written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-02-20 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estimates of groundwater recharge and discharge rates are needed at many different scales for many different purposes. These include such tasks as evaluating landslide risks, managing groundwater resources, locating nuclear waste repositories, and estimating global budgets of water and greenhouse gasses. Groundwater Fluxes Across Interfaces focuses on scientific challenges in (1) the spatial and temporal variability of recharge and discharge, (2) how information at one scale can be used at another, and (3) the effects of groundwater on climate and vice versa.
Book Synopsis Recharge and Discharge Estimation in Data Poor Areas by :
Download or read book Recharge and Discharge Estimation in Data Poor Areas written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This project involved two phases, the first of which compiled reviews of recharge and discharge studies that have been undertaken in Australia. It also involved preliminary identification of the parameters (climate, soils, regolith, near-surface geology, landforms, vegetation etc.) that determine recharge and discharge rates along with a review of the appropriate scale mapping approaches available for these parameters. The second phase of the project utilised empirical relationships derived from data collected in Phase 1 of the project in a decision tree methodology that guides the user to the most appropriate estimate for recharge/discharge given the data availability. This report documents the various methods of estimating recharge and/or discharge using specifically developed Excel spreadsheets and associated input GIS data". --Online abstract.
Book Synopsis Estimation of Natural Groundwater Recharge by : I. Simmers
Download or read book Estimation of Natural Groundwater Recharge written by I. Simmers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In view of the rapidly expanding urban, industrial and agri cultural water requirements in many areas and the normally associated critical unreliability of surface water supplies in arid and semi-arid zones, groundwater exploration and use is of fundamental importance for logical economic development. Two interrelated facets should be evident in all such groundwater projects : (a) definition of groundwater recharge mechanisms and characteristics for identified geological formations, in order to determine whether exploitation in the long-term involves 'mining' of an es sentially 'fossil' resource or withdrawal from a dynamic supply. A solution to this aspect is essential for development of a re source management policy: (b) determination of recharge variability in time and space to thus enable determination of total aquifer input and to quantify such practical aspects as 'minimum risk' waste disposal locations and artificial recharge potential via (e.g.) devegetation or engi neering works. However, current international developments relating to natural recharge indicate the following 'problems' ; no single comprehensive estimation technique can yet be iden tified from the spectrum of methods available; all are reported to give suspect results.

Book Synopsis Groundwater Recharge from Run-off, Infiltration and Percolation by : K.-P. Seiler
Download or read book Groundwater Recharge from Run-off, Infiltration and Percolation written by K.-P. Seiler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-09-26 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To face the threats to the water supply and to maintain sustainable water management policies, detailed knowledge is needed on the surface-to-subsurface transformation link in the water cycle. Recharge flux is covered in this book as well as many other groundwater issues, including a comparison of the traditional and modern approaches to determine groundwater recharge. The authors also explain in detail the fate of groundwater recharge in the subsurface by hydraulic and geologic means, in order to stimulate adapted groundwater-management strategies.

Book Synopsis Hydrology in Practice by : Elizabeth M. Shaw
Download or read book Hydrology in Practice written by Elizabeth M. Shaw and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrology in Practice is an excellent and very successful introductory text for engineering hydrology students who go on to be practitioners in consultancies, the Environment Agency, and elsewhere. This fourth edition of Hydrology in Practice, while retaining all that is excellent about its predecessor, by Elizabeth M. Shaw, replaces the material on the Flood Studies Report with an equivalent section on the methods of the Flood Estimation Handbook and its revisions. Other completely revised sections on instrumentation and modelling reflect the many changes that have occurred over recent years. The updated text has taken advantage of the extensive practical experience of the staff of JBA Consulting who use the methods described on a day-to-day basis. Topical case studies further enhance the text and the way in which students at undergraduate and MSc level can relate to it. The fourth edition will also have a wider appeal outside the UK by including new material on hydrological processes, which also relate to courses in geography and environmental science departments. In this respect the book draws on the expertise of Keith J. Beven and Nick A. Chappell, who have extensive experience of field hydrological studies in a variety of different environments, and have taught undergraduate hydrology courses for many years. Second- and final-year undergraduate (and MSc) students of hydrology in engineering, environmental science, and geography departments across the globe, as well as professionals in environmental protection agencies and consultancies, will find this book invaluable. It is likely to be the course text for every undergraduate/MSc hydrology course in the UK and in many cases overseas too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition is extensively revised throughout with expanded discussion of modeling fundamentals and coverage of advances in model calibration and uncertainty analysis that are revolutionizing the science of groundwater modeling. The text is intended for undergraduate and graduate level courses in applied groundwater modeling and as a comprehensive reference for environmental consultants and scientists/engineers in industry and governmental agencies. - Explains how to formulate a conceptual model of a groundwater system and translate it into a numerical model - Demonstrates how modeling concepts, including boundary conditions, are implemented in two groundwater flow codes-- MODFLOW (for finite differences) and FEFLOW (for finite elements) - Discusses particle tracking methods and codes for flowpath analysis and advective transport of contaminants - Summarizes parameter estimation and uncertainty analysis approaches using the code PEST to illustrate how concepts are implemented - Discusses modeling ethics and preparation of the modeling report - Includes Boxes that amplify and supplement topics covered in the text - Each chapter presents lists of common modeling errors and problem sets that illustrate concepts
