Book Synopsis Development of a Corona Anemometer for Measurement of Stratospheric Turbulence by : R. E. Good
Download or read book Development of a Corona Anemometer for Measurement of Stratospheric Turbulence written by R. E. Good and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The length of time pollution remains in the stratosphere depends upon the intensity of stratospheric turbulence. Measurement of stratospheric turbulence has been limited due to the lack of a suitable instrument. A new instrument has been developed to meet this need. The corona anemometer sensor development is described from the physical principles of operation through the electronic circuitry, laboratory and in-flight calibrations to the first test flight. The corona anemometer measures the stratospheric wind and turbulence by detecting the amount of displacement the corona ion beam suffers in transversing a one inch gap exposed to the horizontal wind. The instrument response is linear and has a frequency response from 0 to 2000 Hz, sufficient to measure atmospheric turbulence directly. The use of this instrument in the measurement of stratospheric turbulence will significantly enhance the knowledge of stratosphere properties and improve the accuracy of environmental assessments. Book Synopsis New Techniques and Devices for Measuring Stratospheric Winds and Turbulence by :
Download or read book New Techniques and Devices for Measuring Stratospheric Winds and Turbulence written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary instrument serviced under this contract is a Corona Anemometer, an instrument developed at AFGL to measure turbulence in the stratosphere. High voltage breakdown in a point to plane system is used to generate a corona current of a few micro-amps. The plane in this instrument is a circular disc with a hole in the center to allow for ion extraction. The ions are then attracted to a target plate which is used to sense the beam displacement as a function of wind velocity. The target plate is divided into four quadrants which are isolated from each other and have separate amplifiers to measure their portion of the ion beam. Wind blowing perpendicular to the ion beam will cause a displacement. By comparing in-flight results with a laboratory calibration, one can obtain pertinent data on wind profiles as a function of altitude and time.

Book Synopsis Stratospheric Residence Times from Balloon Measurements of Wind Shears by : Norman Rosenberg
Download or read book Stratospheric Residence Times from Balloon Measurements of Wind Shears written by Norman Rosenberg and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of winds measured by a corona anemometer during a 10-hour balloon flight in the stratosphere between altitudes of 17 km and 25 km has been completed. Calibration of the anemometer was accomplished by cross-correlation with a wind velocity measured from radar track of the balloon. Instrumental noise in the corona anemometer has been estimated, and its effect on calculation of wind shears is discussed. Stratospheric turbulence has been calculated from local wind shears and local temperature profiles. (Author).

Book Synopsis Wind Tunnel and Laboratory Calibration of Balloon-borne Wind Sensors by : J. H. Brown
Download or read book Wind Tunnel and Laboratory Calibration of Balloon-borne Wind Sensors written by J. H. Brown and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-low speed wind sensors have been calibrated for measuring the wind speed at an instrument suspended below stratospheric balloons. The low Reynolds number environment was duplicated at the NASA/Ames low-speed MARSWIT wind-tunnel facility, and in a laboratory bell jar. The two new instruments are the time-of-flight instrument that measures the motion of an ion cloud through an open pipe, and the corona anemometer that measures the displacement of an ion beam transversing the air-stream flowing between two plates. The calibrations consist of placing the instruments in a flow stream, and relating the instrument output to the flow-stream velocity. The laboratory calibration is easy to conduct, but is limited to a measurement of internal flow velocity. The wind-tunnel calibration is performed to relate laboratory calibration to freestream conditions. (Author).
