However, a well-developed marching band program involves students in meaningful activities that may develop important musical, marching, and life skills outcomes. The purpose of this capstone project was to develop a curricular structure for a high school marching band. Following a review of literature, the author's philosophical beliefs about marching band are presented. Then, specific student learning outcomes related to the development of musical and marching concepts and skills, as well as life skills, are presented in a curricular scope and sequence. A sample calendar of events that illustrates the flow of marching band activities throughout the year is also provided. Finally, appendices to this document include a (a) Marching Fundamentals Handbook (Appendix A), to be used by band directors and their students, (b) sample marching band rehearsal timeline (Appendix B), (c) sample full lesson plan for a marching band rehearsal (Appendix C), (d) rubric to assess marching (Appendix D), (e) rubric to assess musical performance (Appendix E), and (f) sample music/drill analysis chart (Appendix F).

Book excerpt: The prevailing discourse surrounding urban music education suggests the deficit-laden notion that urban school settings are "less than," rather than "different than," their counterparts. Through the lens of contextually-specific teaching, this book provides a counternarrative on urban music education that encourages urban music teachers to focus on the strengths of their students as their primary resource. Through a combination of research-based strategies and practical suggestions from the author's own experience teaching music in urban settings, the book highlights important issues for teachers to consider, such as culturally relevant pedagogy, the "opportunity gap," race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, musical content, curricular change, music program development, student motivation, and strategies for finding inspiration and support. Throughout the book, the stories of five highly successful urban music teachers are highlighted, providing practical, real-world advice for music teachers across the domains of general, choral, band, and string music teaching. Recognizing that the term "urban" can encompass a wide variety of different school and community settings, this book challenges all teachers who work in under-served and under-resourced settings to take a critical look at their own music classroom and work to tailor their pedagogy to meet the particular needs of their students.

Book excerpt: Many high school marching bands in urban school districts across the United States incorporate the marching style used by Historically Black Colleges and University (HBCU) programs. This research aims to investigate the details of teaching the HBCU marching style and provide recommendations on developing more instructional materials and scholarly resources on teaching the marching style. This study will benefit music educators who need more experience in the HBCU style and HBCU music education graduates who are novices in teaching. The band directors of the high school band programs are commonly HBCU graduates who traditionally follow the philosophy taught at their alma maters. Although marching band technique books include assorted style performance styles, there is a comprehensive overview of the HBCU marching style. The methodology of this research requires a qualitative descriptive approach. To analyze the opinions, attitudes, and experiences of the band directors who incorporate the HBCU marching style, the researcher will create a questionnaire distributed via social media groups, email, and personal inboxes. The researcher will also observe video performances, documentaries, and recorded interviews to analyze the intricacies of the marching style. With great expectations, the findings of this research explained the shortage of instructional resources for the HBCU marching style, examined the instructional methods of teaching the marching style effectively, and offered recommendations on how to develop instructional materials.

Book excerpt: University marching bands utilize students to lead their peers for a variety of purposes including, but not limited to, building musical capacities, delegating staff responsibilities, increasing group comradery, individualizing the approach to teaching and motivating, and building life skills amongst the students. University band programs work to incorporate musical, personal, and leadership experiences through the act of music-making in which student leaders develop effective leadership skills. Student leaders are allotted opportunities to grow in confidence, leadership skills, and motivational techniques as they interacted with and teach their peers. Leadership education provides guidelines and models for understanding student leadership development. Two of these models can help to clarify three aspects of development occurring and how those aspects join together to create the bigger picture of a student's leadership capacity: readiness, willingness, and ability. Through a post hoc case study utilizing an R1 university marching band program, student leaders were selected and interviewed to better understand how they developed over their tenure of positional leadership. The findings addressed the research question in better understanding students' development in self-efficacy, motivation to lead peers, gained leadership skills, and overall leadership development. Findings also revealed additional aspects of student leadership development from the perspective of the participants. The researcher utilized multiple interviews with nine participants, stimulated recall, and observation to better understand the participants' reflection of development. Understanding how students are developing and why can provide educators with guidelines and processes for training and assessing student leaders in a university marching band.
