Book Synopsis The Development of Mathematical Skills by : Chris Donlan
Download or read book The Development of Mathematical Skills written by Chris Donlan and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current research into the psychology of children's mathematics is extremely diverse. The present volume reflects this diversity; it is unique in its breadth, bringing together accounts of cutting-edge research from widely differing, sometimes opposing viewpoints. The reader with a grounding in developmental psychology but no knowledge of mathematical development will enjoy a wide ranging and challenging summary of current trends. Those already familiar with some of the work may take the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and to evaluate new methodologies and the insights they offer. The book is an invitation to explore a complex set of phenomena for which no unitary explanation can be offered. It aims to show that apparently disparate research perspectives may be complementary to each other; and to suggest that progress towards a comprehensive account of mathematical skills may require a broad-based understanding of research from more than one viewpoint.

Download or read book Noncognitive Skills and Their Development written by William N. Evans and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These articles include recent research on ways to incorporate the noncognitive side of ability in economic theory and to empirically assess and explain its role in labor market and behavioral outcomes. Contributions investigate the extent to which assignment of workers is determined by traditional cognitive variables and by personality traits. Also presented in this collection is research on the role of noncognitive skills in explaining the labor market position of underrepresented groups and research that integrates the economic and psychological theory and evidence on noncognitive skills.

Book Synopsis The Nature and Origin of Mathematical Skills by : J.I.D. Campbell
Download or read book The Nature and Origin of Mathematical Skills written by J.I.D. Campbell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1992-08-07 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A broad range of current experimental research on numerical cognition and the acquisition of mathematical skills is covered in this volume. The individual chapters provide in-depth analysis of specific issues, methodologies, phenomena, and theory. The book is divided into two parts. In the first part the focus is on the acquisition and development of numerical skills. Part 2 of the book contains research on the information-processing basis of numerical skills, focusing on the mechanisms of perception, attention, and memory that support number skills. The range of theoretical and methodological orientations represented in the volume captures both the diversity and coherence of contemporary research into mathematical skills. The research of educational psychologists, cognitive psychologists, and cognitive neuropsychologists mutually informs and reinforces theoretical developments within each area. The multidisciplinary interest in mathematics skills reflects the pervasiveness and importance of mathematics in education, technology, and science, and also indicates that questions about mathematical competence address important issues in diverse areas of psychology and cognitive science.

Book Synopsis Development and the Next Generation by :
Download or read book Development and the Next Generation written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The theme of The World Development Report 2007 is youth - young people between the ages of 12 to 24. As this population group seeks identity and independence, they make decisions that affect not only their own well-being, but that of others, and they do this in a rapidly changing demographic and socio-economic environment. Supporting young people's transition to adulthood poses important opportunities and risky challenges for development policy. Are education systems preparing young people to cope with the demands of changing economies? What kind of support do they get as they enter the labor market? Can they move freely to where the jobs are? What can be done to help them avoid serious consequences of risky behavior, such as death from HIV-AIDS and drug abuse? Can their creative energy be directed productively to support development thinking? The report will focus on crucial capabilities and transitions in a young person's life: learning for life and work, staying healthy, working, forming families, and exercising citizenship. For each, there are opportunities and risks; for all, policies and institutions matter."
Book Synopsis Visible Thinking in the K8 Mathematics Classroom by : Ted H. Hull
Download or read book Visible Thinking in the K8 Mathematics Classroom written by Ted H. Hull and published by Corwin Press. This book was released on 2011-01-21 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key to students' success in math lies in a way of teaching that provides clear evidence of how students are thinking about problems and builds on that thinking to take them to a deeper level of understanding. Seasoned math educators Ted Hull, Don Balka, and Ruth Harbin Miles offer teachers a sequential and developmental plan for integrating visual thinking into current classroom practices, and gradually, but steadily, initiating successful instructional changes in mathematics. Their new book provides teachers with numerous sample problems and classroom scenarios, showing successful teacher interventions at work, and offers guidance on how teachers can adapt traditional problems to promote visible thinking in their own classrooms.

Book Synopsis Standards for K-12 Engineering Education? by : National Research Council
Download or read book Standards for K-12 Engineering Education? written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-10-28 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this study was to assess the value and feasibility of developing and implementing content standards for engineering education at the K-12 level. Content standards have been developed for three disciplines in STEM education-science, technology, and mathematic-but not for engineering. To date, a small but growing number of K-12 students are being exposed to engineering-related materials, and limited but intriguing evidence suggests that engineering education can stimulate interest and improve learning in mathematics and science as well as improve understanding of engineering and technology. Given this background, a reasonable question is whether standards would improve the quality and increase the amount of teaching and learning of engineering in K-12 education. The book concludes that, although it is theoretically possible to develop standards for K-12 engineering education, it would be extremely difficult to ensure their usefulness and effective implementation. This conclusion is supported by the following findings: (1) there is relatively limited experience with K-12 engineering education in U.S. elementary and secondary schools, (2) there is not at present a critical mass of teachers qualified to deliver engineering instruction, (3) evidence regarding the impact of standards-based educational reforms on student learning in other subjects, such as mathematics and science, is inconclusive, and (4) there are significant barriers to introducing stand-alone standards for an entirely new content area in a curriculum already burdened with learning goals in more established domains of study.
