Book excerpt: In the spring of 1986, an intensive aquatic biological testing program was carried out over a 45-day period in an attempt to evaluate possible toxicity in an important fishery resource in the French Broad River of East Tennessee. Since 1969 a marked decline in sauger (Stizostedion canadense) populations has occurred below Douglas Dam. In addition to toxicity tests with the water flea (Ceriodaphnia spp.), fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas), and sauger in various life stages, a portable automated fish breathing rate biomonitoring system (AFIRMS) was field tested at streamside in a mobile bioassay trailer. The personal computer based AFIRMS was equipped with 24 channels for continuously monitoring adult sauger breathing activities and various physical sensors. Though all the tests revealed no apparent toxicity in the tailwater reaches of the river, a simulated field test with AFIRMS using toxic leachate from a landfill source induced immediate sauger responses and ultimate mortality to most of the test animals.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old 0-Field is a hazardous waste disposal site at the Aberdeen Proving Ground-Edgewood Area, Aberdeen, Maryland, which has contaminated the underlying groundwater. The contaminated groundwater is collected and treated at the Old 0-Field Groundwater Treatment Facility (GwTF) with subsequent discharge to the Gunpowder River. An in-line automated fish ventilatory biomonitoring system was installed at the GWTF to monitor the effluent for unexpected toxicity as it is discharged. A number of out of control events (stressed fish) occurred during the study (June 23, 1995 to March 31, 1996). The total number of days the system obtained out of control responses was 21.0 d. Explanations for the out of control responses were available for 20.6 d. No obvious explanations were apparent for 0.5 d. The out of control responses occurred from (1) changes in effluent water quality; (2) power failures; or (3) a proportional diluter failure. Changes in effluent water quality accounted for 89.2% of the total out of control responses with explanation. Loss of power and a diluter malfunction accounted for 5.9% and 4.9% of the out of control responses with explanation, respectively. Out of control responses with no explanation occurred 0.2% of the time or 0.5 d during the study. No acute toxicity attributable to the GWTF effluent quality occurred during the study.

Book excerpt: The study of the relationship between environmental pollution and human health is in its infancy. The number of substances and mixtures that have been identified in uncontrolled hazardous waste sites or that have been in advertently released into the environment is large and data on how thes~ substances are modified as they interact with one another as they migrate through soil, air, and water are limited. There are also limits on our un derstanding of how these substances may be ingested, inhaled, or absorbed by people. The complexity of possible interactions between biological, chemical, and physical components in a given environment makes it virtually impossible to evaluate the potential for adverse biological effects ade quately in the laboratory. Other, more comprehensive methods which provide realistic and interpretable results must be used. Many scientists believe that humans represent the ultimate sentinel species of a toxic exposure re sUlting from environmental pollution, however such exposures may also se verely impact environmental health. There exists a wide variety of organ isms in the natural environment that could be used to provide an early warning for potential human health effects as well as to indicate adverse ecological effects. The issue of effective utilization of sentinel species for environment al monitoring is a rapidly developing area of research which has grown in importance during the last decade.
