This book was released on 2011-11-08 with total page 1010 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An indispensable, fully updated guide for everyone interested in identifying, studying, or conserving the flora of New England This comprehensive manual offers accurate, up-to-date, and clear information for identifying New England's remarkable array of tracheophytes (vascular plants, excluding mosses). With fully researched entries on some 3,500 native and nonnative species, the book is the first in decades to provide a complete and correct botanical reference for the region's noncultivated plants. The volume includes many new species not documented in New England before, while also excluding many species that have erroneously appeared in earlier manuals. Focusing on the taxonomy and distribution of New England plants, the manual is largely dedicated to identification keys and to species entries that provide scientific name, origin, regional conservation ranking, common name, synonyms, distribution, ecology, and other miscellaneous items of interest. Nearly one-third of the entries are accompanied by helpful black-and-white line illustrations. Additional special features: Precise distribution information, accurate to the state level Details on unusual plant groups not included in other sources Reliable and versatile keys for identification Tips on recognizing hybrid plants in the field A companion interactive teaching Web site (under development) Comprehensive glossary

Book Synopsis Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems by : Brian Harrison Walker
Download or read book Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems written by Brian Harrison Walker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-11-13 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major new book presents a collection of essays by leading authorities who address the current state of knowledge. The chapters bring together the early results of an international scientific research program designed to address what will happen to our ability to produce food and fiber, and what effects there will be on biological diversity under rapid environmental change. This book addresses how these changes to terrestrial ecosystems will feed back to further environmental change. International in scope, this state-of-the-art assessment will interest policymakers, students and scientists interested in global change, climate change and biodiversity. Special features include descriptions of a dynamic global vegetation model, developing generic crop models and a special section on the emerging discipline of global ecology.

Book Synopsis Strengths-Based Nursing Care by : Laurie N. Gottlieb, PhD, RN
Download or read book Strengths-Based Nursing Care written by Laurie N. Gottlieb, PhD, RN and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 2012-08-22 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first practical guide for nurses on how to incorporate the knowledge, skills, and tools of Strength-Based Nursing Care (SBC) into everyday practice. The text, based on a model developed by the McGill University Nursing Program, signifies a paradigm shift from a deficit-based model to one that focuses on individual, family, and community strengths as a cornerstone of effective nursing care. The book develops the theoretical foundations underlying SBC, promotes the acquisition of fundamental skills needed for SBC practice, and offers specific strategies, techniques, and tools for identifying strengths and harnessing them to facilitate healing and health. The testimony of 46 nurses demonstrates how SBC can be effectively used in multiple settings across the lifespan.

Download or read book Conservation of Threatened Plants written by J. Simmons and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last hlO hundred years man has changed from living in equilibrium with the natural world which sustained him, to a new position in which he is now its undisputed ruler - and very often out of equilibrium - able in a matter of hours to reduce miles of forest to devastated, potential desert. This destructive and wasteful ability has increas~d dramatically over recent years. At the same time however the need for conservation, particularly of plants as a resource for the future, has also become apparent, along with the realisation that advanced technologies can produce more from existing agricultural and forest regions. This may to some extent relieve the heavy pressure on the vulnerable areas where short term over-exploitation leads to permanent destruction of whole ecosystems, and the attendant loss, for ever, of many of the animals and plants which originally lived there. There still remains today a vast number of plant species whose potential is unknown. Maybe they will never have more than aesthetic value to mankind. But who knows where, for example, the next anti cancer agent may be found. And anyway future generations may not be ready to accept such anthropocentric values, and the options should be kept open for the philosophical concept that all life on earth has a right to exist and that man has none to exterminate.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Bryology by : W. B. Schofield
Download or read book Introduction to Bryology written by W. B. Schofield and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated text/reference, originally printed in 1985, provides a comprehensive introduction to the structure, evolution and interrelationships of the bryophytes. Leading bryologist W. B. Schofield gives a broad, international view of bryology that goes beyond a basic understanding of structure to present the bryophytes as a vital group of living plants. After a solid foundation in the morphology of mosses, liverworts and hornworts separate chapters, organized to allow easy comparison of the evolutionary lines, offer definitive information on the biology of the organisms. Topics covered in detail include cytology, genetics, chemistry, ecology, physiology, geography and the history of the discipline. Emphasizing the biologic significance of the bryophytes, the author uses an abundance of elegant original illustrations to show the structure, diversity and the natural beauty of the bryophytes. There is also an extensive glossary of bryologic terminology. W. B. Schofield is Professor Emeritus at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He is a former president of the American Bryological and Lichenological Society.
