Not only had the violent wartime events destroyed Jewish life and especially the living space of Eastern European Jews, but the impacts of war, the geopolitical change and a radicalization of anti-Semitism also led to a crisis of Jewish identity. Furthermore, during the process of national self-discovery and the establishing of new states the societal position of the Jews and their relationship to the state had to be redefined. These partially violent processes, which were always accompanied by anti-Semitism, evoked Jewish and Gentile debates, in which questions about Jewish loyalty to the old and/or new states as well as concepts of Jewish identity under the new political circumstances were negotiated. This volume collects articles dealing with these Jewish and gentile debates about military service and war memory in Central Europe.

Diese soll hier aber nur kurz als Einleitung dieser Arbeit dienen, um Migration und Staatenlosigkeit dieses Volkes verständlich zu machen und die Ausprägung verschiedenster Mentalitäten und Teilgruppen zu erklären. Um das Thema etwas einzugrenzen möchte ich mich in meinen Ausführungen besonders auf die Juden in Deutschland konzentrieren. In diesem Zusammenhang werde ich auf Emanzipation und Akkulturation des deutschen Judentums zu Beginn des 18.Jht eingehen, welches einen wesentlichen Bestandteil zum Verständnis jüdischer Kultur in Deutschland leistet und ein exemplarisches Bild von dieser Minderheit zeichnet, in dem der Fokus explizit auf die Darstellung von Bildung, Berufsstruktur und sozialen Milieus gerichtet ist. Als besonders prägnant wird hier der Wandel von Religion und Traditionspflege hervorstechen, der als ein wesentliches Charakteristikum der kulturellen Anpassung gesehen werden kann. Chronologisch fortgeschritten erörtert der nächste Gliederungspunkt den modernen Antisemitismus und dessen Folgen für die Juden und die jüdische Identität. In diesem Kontext wird auf den Zentralverein der Juden in Deutschland und den Zionismus eingegangen, da diese Organisationen anhand der Einstellungen ihrer Mitglieder wiederum ein Beispiel für jüdische Identitätssuche und Identitätsprobleme darstellen. Das nächste Kapitel zu Ostjuden in Deutschland zeigt die Heterogenität und das Konfliktpotential allein unter den deutschen Juden. Hier werden die Diskrepanzen zwischen Ost- und Westjuden thematisiert, zusätzlich wird das Selbstverständnis der Ostjuden reflektiert, um die Zerrissenheit dieser Minorität zu veranschaulichen. Abschließend geht es im letzten Kapitel um die heutige Integration und Identifikation der Juden. Mit der Analyse zu Interviews von emigrierten Juden, aus welchen sich geschlechtsspezifische Stereotype bezüglich der Einstellung gegenüber Deutschland und ihrer Vergangenheit erkennen lassen, sollen repräsentative Statements eine differenzierte Momentaufnahme dieser Thematik geben. Folgend wird die persönliche Ebene um die politische erweitert und institutionelle Unstimmigkeiten, wie die der Streit zwischen dem Zentralrat der Juden und der Union Progressiver Juden zeigt, wie die durch die Heterogenität erzeugten Konflikte noch immer fortbestehen.
