Book Synopsis Detroit Divided by : Reynolds Farley
Download or read book Detroit Divided written by Reynolds Farley and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 2000-05-25 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unskilled workers once flocked to Detroit, attracted by manufacturing jobs paying union wages, but the passing of Detroit's manufacturing heyday has left many of those workers stranded. Manufacturing continues to employ high-skilled workers, and new work can be found in suburban service jobs, but the urban plants that used to employ legions of unskilled men are a thing of the past. The authors explain why white auto workers adjusted to these new conditions more easily than blacks. Taking advantage of better access to education and suburban home loans, white men migrated into skilled jobs on the city's outskirts, while blacks faced the twin barriers of higher skill demands and hostile suburban neighborhoods. Some blacks have prospered despite this racial divide: a black elite has emerged, and the shift in the city toward municipal and service jobs has allowed black women to approach parity of earnings with white women. But Detroit remains polarized racially, economically, and geographically to a degree seen in few other American cities. A Volume in the Multi-City Study of Urban Inequality

Book Synopsis Why Detroit Matters by : Brian Doucet
Download or read book Why Detroit Matters written by Brian Doucet and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2017-04-06 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decline of Motor City, USA, may simply seem to be symptomatic of the decline of industrial cities across the world. But as this book shows us, what happens in Detroit matters for other cities globally--and always has. Why Detroit Matters bridges the academic and nonacademic worlds to examine how the story of Detroit offers powerful and universally applicable lessons on urban decline, planning, urban development, race relations, revitalization, and governance. Reflecting the diversity of the city, Why Detroit Matters includes contributions both from leading scholars and some of the city's most influential writers, planners, artists, and activists--including author George Galster, activist and author Grace Lee Boggs, author John Gallagher, and artist Tyree Guyton--who have all contributed chapters drawing on their rich experience and ideas. Also featuring edited transcripts of interviews with prominent visionaries who are developing innovative solutions to the challenges in Detroit, this book will be of keen interest to urban scholars and students in a variety of disciplines--from geography to economics, sociology, and urban and planning studies--as well as practitioners, including urban and regional planners, urban designers, community activists, and politicians and policy makers. Detroit, this book makes clear, could be a model of renewal and hope for the many cities suffering from similar problems, both in America and beyond.

Book Synopsis Cities and Inequalities in a Global and Neoliberal World by : Faranak Miraftab
Download or read book Cities and Inequalities in a Global and Neoliberal World written by Faranak Miraftab and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities continue to be key sites for the production and contestation of inequalities generated by an ongoing but troubled neoliberal project. Neoliberalism’s onslaught across the globe now shapes diverse inequalities -- poverty, segregation, racism, social exclusion, homelessness -- as city inhabitants feel the brunt of privatization, state re-organization, and punishing social policy. This book examines the relationship between persistent neoliberalism and the production and contestation of inequalities in cities across the world. Case studies of current city realities reveal a richly place-specific and generalizable neoliberal condition that further deepens the economic, social, and political relations that give rise to diverse inequalities. Diverse cases also show how people struggle against a neoliberal ethos and hence the open-endedness of futures in these cities.

Book Synopsis Local Food Systems in Old Industrial Regions by : Jay D. Gatrell
Download or read book Local Food Systems in Old Industrial Regions written by Jay D. Gatrell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been an explosion of interest in local food systems-among policy makers, planners, and public health professionals, as well as environmentalists, community developers, academics, farmers, and ordinary citizens. While most local food systems share common characteristics, the chapters in this book explore the unique challenges and opportunities of local food systems located within mature and/or declining industrial regions. Local food systems have the potential to provide residents with a supply of safe and nutritious food; such systems also have the potential to create much-needed employment opportunities. However, challenges are numerous and include developing local markets of a sufficient scale, adequately matching supply and demand, and meeting the environmental challenges of finding safe growing locations. Interrogating the scale, scope, and economic context of local food systems in aging industrialized cities, this book provides a foundation for the development of new sub-fields in economic, urban, and agricultural geographies that focus on local food systems. The book represents a first attempt to provide a systematic picture of the opportunities and challenges facing the development of local food systems in old industrial regions.
Book Synopsis Dealing with Deindustrialization by : Margaret Cowell
Download or read book Dealing with Deindustrialization written by Margaret Cowell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late 1970s and 1980s saw a process of mass factory closures in cities and regions across the Midwest of the United States. What happened next as leaders reacted to the news of each plant closure and to the broader deindustrialization trend that emerged during this time period is the main subject of this book. It shows how leaders in eight metropolitan areas facing deindustrialization strived for adaptive resilience by using economic development policy. The unique attributes of each region - asset bases, modes of governance, civic capacity, leadership qualities, and external factors - influenced the responses employed and the outcomes achieved. Using adaptive resilience as a lens, Margaret Cowell provides a thorough understanding of how and why regions varied in their abilities to respond to deindustrialization.
