Book excerpt: The Gulf-coast kangaroo rat (Dipodomys compactus) is characteristic of the arid ecosystems of South Texas and the barrier islands. It is listed by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as a species of concern and is the only member of the family Heteromyidae found on Mustang Island, North and South Padre islands, Texas, and the barrier islands of Tamaulipas, Mexico. I conducted my study at Padre Island National Seashore, to investigate this poorly understood species. I estimated population density and distribution, characterized burrow microhabitat, and used Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to compare transects with different kangaroo rat densities. Live-trapping using mark-recapture methodology was conducted for two periods between April 2010 and October 2010 along 12 transects. A variety of microhabitat characteristics of burrows were measured on active burrows. Trap success for the entire sampling period was 5%, but more individuals were caught during the spring sampling period than the fall sampling period. Using the Lincoln-Peterson index, I estimated a population density of 3.6 individuals per hectare. Active burrows differed significantly in slope, type of vegetative cover, and percent vegetative cover compared to paired random locations. Burrows were found in areas with a higher slope and less vegetative cover. Low trap success and coarse scale ecogeographical layers made development of a habitat suitability model difficult. A more intensive study over a longer time frame will be essential to effectively delineate habitat and predict population sizes--Abstract.

Recently the urbanization rate in Central Texas has become one of the highest in the nation. The consequential loss of natural habitat could jeopardize native wildlife species that are already somewhat limited in their distribution. Based on specialized life-history traits that limit large-scale mobility, kangaroo rats (Dipodomys spp.) have been found to be especially sensitive to urbanization-induced habitat modification and fragmentation. Dipodomys compactus is one of five kangaroo rat species found in Texas; this species has narrow, specific habitat requirements. Using a geographic information system (GIS)-based habitat suitability model, I determined that due to isolation among suitable habitat patches, actual D. compactus range in south-central Texas is highly fragmented, and the particular population in south-central Texas may be more isolated than currently thought. The assessment strategy of GIS habitat mapping can be broadly applied to other vulnerable species with similarly narrow habitat parameters to predict current and future management requirements.

Book excerpt: I conducted a habitat assessment on an inland population of the Gulf Coast kangaroo rat (Dipodomys compactus) located in Guadalupe County, Texas. Previous research on the Padre Island population of the Gulf Coast kangaroo rat has shown the species to inhabit open areas with deep sand and little vegetation, essentially barren sand dunes. However, this distinct habitat type does not occur inland and yet the species is found in certain areas of inland south Texas. The goal of my study was to determine if the northernmost known population of D. compactus retains the species affinity for deep sparsely-vegetated sand habitat. My study site was the Diamond Half Ranch consisting of approximately 2303.3 ha, located 16 km south of Seguin, Texas. In order to assess the habitat associations of this inland Gulf Coast kangaroo rat population, 57 points were semi-randomly located across the study site. At each of these points, I used the Daubenmire frame technique to record the percent of ground cover for grass, forbs, small woody plants, litter (dead herbaceous material), and bare substrate (soil, rock) within a 10 m circle centered on the point. I also recorded the average height of the tallest plants, the average tree canopy present at each point using a spherical densiometer, and the number of active (uncluttered opening, feces, tracks, etc) burrow openings. Data were collected in May 2011, August 2011, November 2011, and February 2012.

Book excerpt: Camera trapping studies often focus on estimating population density, which is critical for managing wild populations. Density estimators typically require unique markers such as stripe patterns to identify individuals but most animals do not have such markings. The spatial capture model (SC model; Chandler & Royle, 2013) estimates density without individual identification but lacks sufficient field testing. Here, both the SC model and calibrated capture rate indices were compared against ten sessions of live trapping data on kangaroo rats (Dipodomys spp). These camera and live trapping data were combined in a joint-likelihood model to further compare the two methods. From these comparisons, the factors governing the SC model’s success were scrutinized. Additionally, a method for estimating missed captures was developed and tested here. Regressions comparing live trapping density to the SC model density and capture rate were significant only for the capture rate comparison. Missed image rate had a significant relationship with ambient nighttime temperatures but only marginally improved the capture rate index calibration. Results showed the SC model was highly sensitive to deviations from its movement model, producing potentially misleading results. The model may be effective only when movement assumptions hold. Several factors such as camera coverage area, microhabitat, and burrow locations could be incorporated into the SC model density estimation process to improve precision and inference.

Many heteromyid species, especially kangaroo rats, are highly specialized nocturnal granivorous rodents with external fur lined cheek pouches, bipedal cursorial locomotion, and adaptations for arid and desert conditions. Despite being one of six Texas endemic mammals, few studies have been conducted on habitat requirements, movement, and basic ecology of the Gulf Coast kangaroo rat with no long-term research. From April 2016 to March 2017, I have seasonally monitored burrowing activity of Gulf Coast kangaroo rats and recorded vegetative parameters at 63 randomly selected sites on a working cattle and wildlife ranch located in Guadalupe County, Texas. Sites with active burrows or a history of occupancy were monitored monthly. Within a 10-m radius plot at each site and using the Daubenmire frame cover estimate technique, I recorded percent cover of the following cover classes: bare ground, standing dead vegetation, litter, living grass, and living forbs. Additionally, I identified to the lowest taxonomic level the dominant live green grass and forb species in each Daubenmire frame and recorded the height of the tallest live grass, live forb, and standing dead vegetation. Book excerpt: Maximum entropy estimation is a non-parametric method of determining probability distributions from limited information. In the field of ecology, maximum entropy estimation has seen use in the last 10 to 15 years as a method for developing macroecoogical models. Some macroecoogical metrics, such as the intraspecific spatial abundance distribution and the range-area relationship, and methods, such as setting out a grid and counting individuals, are much more easily applied to plants than animals. However, some animal species do lend themselves to this technique, making it possible to determine these metrics. The giant kangaroo rat (Dipodomys ingens) is one such species, with large burrows that are easily identifiable from aerial photography. This provides an opportunity to test out the applicability of the maximum entropy model for the spatial abundance distribution and the range-area relationship, and compare it to the earlier Coleman random placement model. Scale is found to have a significant effect in the applicability of the maximum entropy model, while the Coleman random placement model fits well across a greater range of scales. In addition, it is shown that the Coleman random placement model can be used to estimate the total number of burrows in an area from limited data, with varying accuracy depending on scale.
