Book excerpt: In this study, it is aimed to determination of the relationship between learning styles and TIMSS mathematics achievements of eighth grade students. Correlational research design that is one of the quantitative research methods, was used in this study. The sample of the research consists of 652 8th grade students 347 are male and 305 are female and the students continue their education in 11 different middle schools in the centre of Bayburt in Turkey. In the research, two data collection tools were used. The first tool is Perceptual Learning Style Preference Questionnaire (PLSPQ) that was developed by Reid (1987) and translated by Bengi ̇(2008) into Turkish. The second tool is 45-questions achievement test that selected from TIMSS 2011 mathematics questions according to experts' opinions. Frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation, ANOVA and correlation analysis were applied through SPSS for data analysis. The most dominant learning style of the students is auditory and the second one is kinaesthetic learning style. Students' general TIMSS scores vary between 11 and 94 and the average TIMSS achievement score is 43.38. Additionally, it was seen that there is no significant relationship between TIMSS mathematics achievement and learning styles.

In many countries researchers have started secondary analysis of the data in search for relationships between contextual factors and achievement. In these analyses two different approaches can be distinguished, which can be characterised by the metaphors of ‘fishing’ and ‘hunting’. In the ‘fishing’ approach, researchers begin with an open mind, considering all possible context variables as potentially influential. Applying analysis techniques such as regression analysis, Lisrel, PLS, HLM, and MLN, they then identify important factors within their countries or across a number of countries. In the ‘hunting’ approach, researchers hypothesise certain context variables and trace the effect of these variables on mathematics and/or science achievement.

This study examined the potential relationship between the degree of match (as determined by comparing learning style preferences of students with instructional strategies of teachers) and the academic achievement of fourth grade students as shown by Palmetto Assessment of State Standards scores in four academic content areas, namely English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. The researcher collected data from a sample of approximately 200 students from three schools in different northwestern South Carolina districts. A quantitative approach utilizing a correlational design was used to analyze the data and produced Pearson r values for each content area respectively. These results demonstrate a lack of significant correlation between variables.

Book excerpt: This research aimed to determine the relationship between students' learning styles of grade eight students and their mathematics performance during the 1st quarter in Los Baños Integrated School, Los Baños, Laguna. The instrument used in this study is the Learning Style inventory questionnaire adapted from Dr. John Golden, a Michigan math professor and proprietor of the MathHombre blog and based from the learning styles of Harvey Silver. The questionnaire is divided into two parts: the first part is the respondent's profile which consists of name and sex then the second part is the items which consist of 10 items for each learning style: Mastery, Interpersonal, Understanding and Self-expressive respectively. The instrument, learning style inventory questionnaire, was administered to 187 randomly selected respondents. Male respondents are greater than the female respondents having 95 and 92 respondents respectively. They are chosen through “draw-lots” or fishbowl technique. The data gathered from the questionnaires are analyzed and interpreted using descriptive statistics such as frequency count and percentage distribution and inferential statistics including Chi-square test (non-parametric) to determine the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. The students who belong to mastery learning style consist of 53 or 28.34% is the highest learning style of all the respondents. Under the level of performance in mathematics, the dominant level is the developing level in which the student at this level possesses the minimum knowledge and skills and core understandings, but needs help throughout the performance of authentic tasks. A chi-square test was utilized to analyze if there is a significant relationship between respondent's learning styles and level of performance in mathematics. The study revealed that there is no significant relationship between the variables, the degree of freedom is 16 computed from the formula, the Computed X2 - value is 16.984 and the tabular X2 - value at .05 level of significance is 20.30. Therefore, the hypothesis stating that there is no significant relationship between Grade eight students' learning styles and their mathematics performance is accepted. Similar studies need to be conducted to further measure the associations of learning styles and students' mathematical performance of other variables which were not included in this study. Moreover, conduct seminars and trainings for students to enhance students' learning styles towards mathematics.

Forty-five countries collected data in more than 30 languages. Five grade levels were tested in the two subject areas. This report describes the science achievement of seventh and eighth graders, emphasizing the results from the eighth-grade assessment. Results are presented for the 41 countries that completed all the steps necessary to appear in this report. Singapore was the top performing country at both grade levels, with Colombia, Kuwait, and South Africa performing at the lowest levels. Perhaps the most striking finding was the large difference in average achievement between the top-performing and bottom-performing countries. Results provided a chain of overlapping countries, with most countries having an average achievement similar to that of a cluster of others, but with large differences between the top and bottom of the chain. In most countries and internationally, boys outperformed girls at both grade levels. The majority of eighth graders in nearly every country indicated that they liked science, but not all students had positive feelings about the subject. Home factors were strongly related to achievement in every participating country, but relationships between science achievement and instructional practices were less clear within and across countries. Book excerpt: This study used the TIMSS 2011 International Database to investigate predictors of 8th-grade mathematics achievement across three countries that represent a wide range of cultures and levels of mathematics achievement: Chinese Taipei, Ghana, and the United States. A review of literature on predictors of mathematics achievement yielded variables in four major contexts of learning—a student’s home, beliefs, school, and classroom. The variables of home that were investigated are home possessions for learning, parent education, and parents’ expectations and involvement in their children’s education. The variables of student beliefs were self-confidence in mathematics and the value of mathematics. The variables of school were school climate, school resources, administrator leadership, and school socioeconomic status. Finally, the variables of the classroom are access and equity, curriculum, tools and technology, assessment, and teacher professionalism. A 2-level hierarchical linear model was used to investigate relationships between the predictors for learning mathematics and 8th-grade mathematics achievement. Level 1 represented the relationships among the student-level variables, and Level 2 represented the school-level variables. In Chinese Taipei, statistically significant predictors of mathematics achievement in the final model included variables from the domains of home resources, student beliefs, school climate, and school socioeconomic status. In Ghana, both student-beliefs variables had statistically significant relationships with mathematics achievement, and one school climate and one school socioeconomic status variable each was found statistically significant. The U.S. had statistically significant predictors in the domains of home resources, student beliefs, school socioeconomic status, classroom-level access and equity, classroom assessment, and teacher professionalism. This study extends previous research in several ways. It includes a review of classic and recent literature regarding predictors of mathematics achievement; 17 scales using the Rasch partial credit model were developed to measure predictors of mathematics achievement; and the results of this study may be used to examine the relationships between the independent variables of this study and middle-grades mathematics achievement in countries similar to the 3 in this study to reinforce and support variables that contribute to student achievement.

The first purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties (i.e., reliability and validity) of the learning strategies domain of the GOALS-S (Dowson & McInerney, 2004) with 8th grade students. The learning strategies domain of the GOALS-S items assess students' use of cognitive and metacognitive learning strategies. This study also examined the relationship between self-efficacy for self-regulated learning, learning strategy use, and math achievement. The data were collected from 399 eight grade students near the end of 2018-2019 academic year. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was used to evaluate the psychometrics properties of the GOALS-S. Following the CFA, the relationship between self-efficacy for self-regulated learning, learning strategy use, and math achievement was examined by using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results obtained from this study provided evidence for validity and reliability of the learning strategies domain of the GOALS-S. The data supported the hypothesized six-factor model with minor modifications. The results of the structural model indicated that learning strategy use had a direct impact on mathematics achievement. Also, self-efficacy for self-regulated had direct effect on mathematics achievement, as well as indirect effect on mathematics achievement mediated by learning strategy use. Discussion of the findings, implications for teachers, policy makers, and researchers, and limitations and future directions are presented.
