Book excerpt: Excerpt from Determination of the Ratio of Transformation and of the Phase Relations in Transformers Usually the phase of the secondary is so nearly the reverse of the primary phase that the error with high power-factors would be insignificant, but with low power-factors a large error might be introduced, as may be seen by reference to the numerical examples given below. In view of these facts, it is thought desirable to publish the methods of measurement of these quantities in use at the Bureau of Standards. In the vector diagram, Fig. i, are shown the various quantities which go to determine the ratio of the transformer. The length of the vector is proportional to the maximum value of the quantity, and it is considered to be rotating uniformly in a counter clockwise direction. Its projection on a fixed diameter will then represent the instantaneous value of the quantity, assuming it to be sinusoidal. The angles between the vectors represent the phase-angles of the corresponding quantities. represents the magnetic flux linking both primary and secondary windings. It induces in the secondary winding an electromotive force E2 and in the primary winding an electromotive force in the same direction, but of different magnitude, fixed by the number of turns. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Characteristics and Limitations of the Series Transformer There are certain facts about the series transformer which are gen erally known among men who have anything at all to do with it. It is known that the series transformer consists of two coils metallically sep arate, wound on a laminated iron core that the coil connected in the line generally has fewer turns than the secondary coil across which the instruments are connected, and that the ratio of the turns is about in inverse proportion to the ratio of the currents. It is known that it is dangerous to leave the secondary open-circuited because if a current flows in the primary, high voltages will be induced in the open-circuited secondary and there will be high heating of the iron core which may cause disaster. It is also known that slight variations in secondary load (or resistance and reactance) do not change the transformation ratio to a very great extent, and that the ratio is nearly constant for all values of primary current within a given range. It is also known that when used in connection with wattmeters annoyance is often caused by a cer tain angle of phase displacement from the ideal position. These very nearly constant factors, however, such as current ratio and phase angle, are very often subject to great variations, and in the following discussion it is proposed to investigate the relations between these factors and the constants of the transformer and load; to determine how and to what extent they are influenced by these constants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Calibration of Voltage Transformers and High-Voltage Capacitors at Nist In the past nist had used a comparative null method to calibrate voltage transformers. The un known transformer was compared to a nist refer ence transformer using a voltage comparator consisting of a variable resistive divider and a mu tual inductor. Reference transformers were avail able with ratios ranging from up to Measurement uncertainties in the comparison of the unknown transformer with the reference trans former were to.ol% for ratio and t0.3 minutes for phase angle. The ratio and phase angle of the reference transformers were known to about the same accuracy. There are several disadvantages to this approach. Since the comparator has a limited range, several reference transformers must be available to cover the anticipated users' needs. The ratio and phase angles of each one of these trans formers must be carefully determined over the secondary voltage range of interest. These trans formers then have to be rechecked at regular inter vals to determine if the ratios and phase angles have changed. If a direct measurement method were available that was sufficiently accurate and straightforward to make the calibration of these reference trans formers a simple task, then that method could be used to measure the client's transformer directly. At nist, the direct null method in use origi nally involved balancing the secondary of the ref erence transformer against the output of a resistive divider used in conjunction with a variable mutual inductor to provide phase angle balance. Such a measurement was difficult because the resistive di vider ratio changed with heating. Since the late 19605 a direct null method has been available that is straightforward and accurate and is now used at nist in place of comparative methods us ing reference transformers. Capacitors are invariably measured by balancing the unknown capacitor against a known standard using some type of bridge arrangement. There are a variety of such bridges described in the literature The one most used in high-voltage applications in the last 60 years is the Schering bridge (fig. The two high-voltage arms of this bridge consist of the standard and unknown capacitors. The two low voltage arms are resistors (one has a parallel capacitor for phase angle balance).
