Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: 76, , language: English, abstract: Rivers are the major sources of water being used in cities and its environs. This water may either be treated or untreated. River banks could be very busy, varied activities ranging from farming to industrial activities and other domestic household activities are conducted. The present study aimed at investigating the potential sources of selected heavy metal contaminants in River Mukurumudzi, Kwale County. Water and sediments were sampled in four points along the river impacted by mining, human settlements and agricultural activities for three different seasons. The samples were analyzed for Iron, Lead, Cadmium, Copper and Arsenic using an AAS. Sediment quality was also analysed by the calculation of CF and I-geo values. Interpretation of results was conducted using Minitab statistical software and Excel spreadsheets. The range of metals in water during the dry season was Fe (0.19-0.32) mg/l, Pb, Cu, Cd and As were below the detection limits. The range of metals in water during the short rain was Fe (0.12-1.25) mg/l and BDL for all other analysed metals. The range of metals in water during the long rain season was Fe (0.07-1.82) mg/l, Cu (0.08-0.11) mg/l and BDL for all the other analysed metals. The range of metals in sediments during dry season was Fe (0.13-1.44) ppm, Pb (0.08-0.54) ppm, and BDL for all other analysed metals. The range of metals in sediments during short rain season was Fe (0.23-1.73) ppm, Pb (0.12-0.27) ppm, and BDL for all other analysed metals. The range of metals in sediments during the long rain season was Fe (0.25-2.75) ppm, Pb (0.09-0.34) ppm, Cu (0.10-0.14) ppm, and BDL for all other analysed metals. The CF values for sediments were all

In the study, 44 composite water samples were collected, digested, and analyzed for selected metals using ICP-MS. The average concentrations (mg/L) of heavy metals from the pristine sites ranged from 0.003 (As) to 0.929 (Fe), and the mining sites ranged from 0.002 (Pb) to 20.355 (Fe). Generally, the metals were within the WHO and USEPA acceptable limits except Al, Fe, As, Cr, and Mn. Hazard quotients for ingestion (HQing) and dermal contact from pristine and mining sites ranged from 0.838 (Cr) to 3.00 √ó 10,àí4 (Cu) and from 0.181 (As) to 2.40 √ó 10,àí6 (Cu), respectively. The carcinogenic risks (CRs) for ingestion were within standard limit (10,àí6 to 10,àí4). However, Arsenic showed high CRing above the acceptable limit (1.83¬†√ó¬†10,àí2). The CRs for dermal contact range from 4.22 x 10,àí8 to 1.44 x 10,àí9 (Cr) and from 7.34 x 10,àí8 to 5.65 x 10,àí9 (Pb). Carcinogenic risk values for As in the mining areas raise carcinogenic concerns for the residents in the studied areas. PROMETHEE and GAIA indicate major contribution of the metals from the mining. Multivariate PCA and cluster analysis suggest anthropogenic activities as the major source of the metal toxicity of the mine rivers.

Book excerpt: Water is a source of life, nowadays, it become scarcity due to the anthropogenic activities especially the heavy metals which has polluted the river and become harmful for humans health. A study on concentration of heavy metals of surface water was carried out in three selected land-use; shipping yard/industrial area, residential area and agriculture area. The in-situ data were recorded on-site and water samples were taken and analyzed ex-situ using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS).The result showed that the concentration of heavy metals higher in rivers namely Zn, Fe, As and Al within the range of overall mean of 0.016 mg/l - 0.081 mg/l, 0.196 mg/l - 0.439 mg/l, 0.145 mg/l - 0.397 mg/l and 0.236 mg/l - 0.340 mg/l respectively. The other elements, Pb found high in concentration in Station 1 maybe due to the usage of lead-containing oil in the shipping area.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Physical Geography, Geomorphology, Environmental Studies, , language: English, abstract: The effect of leachate seepage from a landfill site on the quality of an urban river, Densu, that is the one of the main sources of water abstracted for treatment for most residents in the Accra Metropolitan area was determined by measuring the levels of heavy metals (As, Pb, Hg, and Cd) in the seepage and in the river itself using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry methods. Heavy metal concentration upstream before leachate contamination was low and within WHO limits. The mean concentrations of arsenic, lead, mercury and cadmium were 0.026mg/l, 0.957mg/l, 0.025mg/l and 0.005mg/l, respectively in the leachate. Mean heavy metal concentration, two hundred metres downstream from the leachate discharge point (where water is drawn for domestic and drinking purpose) was 0.008mg/l for arsenic, 0.393mg/l for lead, 0.001mg/l for mercury while cadmium was not detected. Lead exceeded the WHO acceptable limit of 0.01mg/l for drinking water. Mean levels in the corresponding sediment samples were 0.015mg/kg for arsenic,

Book excerpt: Irrigable water resources have been challenged by the contamination of heavy metals and unwanted ions that impair plant growth and human health. It impaired the quality of edible fruit & vegetables. The objective of this study was to determine the concentration of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, and Cu) and selected ions (chloride, Na, Mg, Ca), and to evaluate its suitability for irrigation use. Water samples were collected from three various locations (the upstream, middle stream, and downstream) of the river. Temperature (T), EC, pH, and total dissolved solids (TDS) were tested onsite using handheld multiparameter testing equipment, while the heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, and Cu) and selected ions (Chloride, Na, Mg, and Ca) of the water sample were analyzed using (ICP-OES). ANOVA test was conducted to examine the concentration variations of heavy metals and selected ions between the sampling locations along the river. The concentrations of (Pb and Cd) were found (2.5,Äì3.9), (0.03,Äì0.4) mg/L respectively, and (Cr and Cu) were below the detectible limit of the (ICP-OES) equipment. Cadmium (Cd) was found to be higher than the permissible limit of FAO (0.01mg/L) for irrigation water. There was no significant variation of heavy metals and selected ions between the sampling locations.
