Adhesive films or cast adhesives could have been evaluated, but since the surfaces, bonding conditions, and other factors could not be duplicated as when bonding metals, it was decided to evaluate actual bonded specimens. The adhesive-bond properties that were to be determined were the shear modulus, modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio, shear and tensile stress-strain curves, and shear and tensile strength. These properties could then be used in theoretical or empirical design criteria for any particular joint to be designed. This report includes an illustration of the application of available design criteria for determining the behavior of lap joints.
