Book excerpt: NOUS AVONS MIS AU POINT UN ENSEMBLE EXPERIMENTAL AUTOMATIQUE DESTINE A LA DETERMINATION DE TRANSITIONS POLYPHASIQUES DANS LES MELANGES FLUIDES EN FONCTION DE LA TEMPERATURE DE L'AMBIANCE A 470 K (A 0,2 K PRES) ET DE LA PRESSION JUSQU'A 70 MPA AVEC UNE PRECISION DE 0,1%. NOTRE MONTAGE N'UTILISE PAS LE MERCURE COMME PISTON MOBILE ET LE VOLUME ACCESSIBLE A L'ECHANTILLON PEUT VARIER D'UN FACTEUR 8 GRACE A UN SYSTEME DE SOUFFLET EN INOX A DIAPHRAGMES SOUDES. CET ENSEMBLE NE COMPORTE AUCUN JOINT EN MATIERE PLASTIQUE AU CONTACT DU MELANGE A ETUDIER DE MANIERE A EVITER TOUT PHENOMENE D'ADSORPTION QUI MODIFIERAIT LA COMPOSITION DU MELANGE DETERMINEE A MIEUX QUE 10##3. NOTRE METHODE PERMET DE DETECTER LES TROIS TYPES DE TRANSITIONS DE PHASES: LIQUIDE (LIQUIDE 1+LIQUIDE 2), (DEMIXTION), LIQUIDE (LIQUIDE+VAPEUR) (POINT DE BULLE), (LIQUIDE+VAPEUR) VAPEUR (POINT DE ROSEE). NOUS L'AVONS VALIDE EN ETUDIANT DEUX CORPS PURS ET 3 MELANGES BINAIRES ETUDIES PAR AILLEURS DANS LA LITTERATURE. LES VALEURS MESUREES SE SONT TOUTES REVELEES EN EXCELLENT ACCORD AVEC CELLES DE LA LITTERATURE. TROIS MELANGES ORIGINAUX ONT ETE ETUDIES: PROPANE+N-DOTRIACONTANE, PROPANE+2-METHYLNAPHTALENE ET PROPANE+9-METHYLANTHRACENE. NOTRE TRAVAIL EXPERIMENTAL SUR LE PREMIER MELANGE APPORTE QUELQUES ELEMENTS DE REPONSES AUX QUESTIONS POSEES SUR LA MISCIBILITE PARTIELLE ET L'UTILISATION DES GAZ LEGERS COMME SOLVANTS SUPERCRITIQUES EN VUE D'UNE RECUPERATION SECONDAIRE DES HUILES DE GISEMENTS PETROLIERS EN REINTEGRANT LES GAZ LEGERS EXTRAITS AU DEBUT DE L'EXPLOITATION DU GISEMENT. NOTRE TRAVAIL EXPERIMENTAL SUR LES MELANGES BINAIRES PROPANE+2-METHYLNAPHTALENE ET PROPANE+9-METHYLANTHRACENE MONTRE QUE LE PREMIER MELANGE PEUT ETRE REPRESENTE PAR UN DIAGRAMME DE PHASES DU TYPE II AU SENS DE LA CLASSIFICATION DE VAN KONYNEBURG ET SCOTT (1971) ET QUE LE DEUXIEME MELANGE EST CARACTERISE PAR L'EXISTENCE D'UNE TRANSITION DE PHASES LIQUIDE (LIQUIDE 1+LIQUIDE 2) EN DESSOUS DE LA TEMPERATURE CRITIQUE DU PROPANE ET JUSQU'A 27,7 MPA. IL SEMBLE QUE LE NOMBRE DE NOYAUX AROMATIQUES JOUE LE MEME ROLE DANS LA CLASSIFICATION DES DIAGRAMMES DE PHASES DES MELANGES (PROPANE+POLYAROMATIQUE) QUE LE NOMBRE N DE CARBONES DANS LES MELANGES PROPANE+N-ALCANE. LA DERNIERE PARTIE DE CE TRAVAIL A CONSISTE EN UNE TENTATIVE DE MODELISATION DES EQUILIBRES POLYPHASIQUES AU MOYEN D'EQUATIONS D'ETAT ET DE CONTRIBUTIONS DE GROUPES ET EN L'EXPLOITATION DES RESULTATS EXPERIMENTAUX OBTENUS. EN RESUME, IL NOUS FAUT INSISTER SUR LA NECESSITE D'ETENDRE LES MESURES EXPERIMENTALES ET, EN UTILISANT LES RESULTATS OBTENUS, D'AFFINER LES MODELES D'EXPLOITATION EXISTANTS

Book excerpt: This second volume carries on the excellent work of its predecessor, ex- tending its scope to other melts and to other techniques. It continues to present first-hand understanding and experience of this difficult and demanding field. There is ever present the trade-off or reconciliation between the novel chemistry of systems not dominated by the mediating influence of a supposedly indifferent solvent and the high temperatures required to effect the fluidity of the system. At the limit, the very high temperatures so increase the rates of all reactions as to dissolve the temporal difference between the thermodynamic and the kinetic view of chemistry. What can happen will happen and invariably does happen. Vessels corrode, the apparatus becomes a reactant, and the number of tolerant materials able to withstand the attack shrinks to graphite, boron carbide or, if all else fails, to frozen parts of the molten salt itself. It is probably true that there is no limit to man's ingenuity but I believe that God gave us molten salts just to test that thesis. If there is ever a Molten Salt Club, and Englishmen love clubs, its membership will be exclusive. It would certainly include the authors of this series. Graham Hills University of Strathclyde ix Preface In the first volume of this series, we expressed our contention that a real need existed for practical guidance in the field of molten salt experimentation.

Book excerpt: Molten salts and fused media provide the key properties and the theory of molten salts, as well as aspects of fused salts chemistry, helping you generate new ideas and applications for fused salts. Molten Salts Chemistry: From Lab to Applications examines how the electrical and thermal properties of molten salts, and generally low vapour pressure are well adapted to high temperature chemistry, enabling fast reaction rates. It also explains how their ability to dissolve many inorganic compounds such as oxides, nitrides, carbides and other salts make molten salts ideal as solvents in electrometallurgy, metal coating, treatment of by-products and energy conversion. This book also reviews newer applications of molten salts including materials for energy storage such as carbon nano-particles for efficient super capacitors, high capacity molten salt batteries and for heat transport and storage in solar plants. In addition, owing to their high thermal stability, they are considered as ideal candidates for the development of safer nuclear reactors and for the treatment of nuclear waste, especially to separate actinides from lanthanides by electrorefining.

Book excerpt: The laws of thermodynamics are amongst the most assured and wide-ranging of all scientific laws. They do not pretend to explain any observation in molecular terms but, by showing the necessary relationships between different physical properties, they reduce otherwise disconnected results to compact order, and predict new effects. This classic title, first published in 1957, is a systematic exposition of principles, with examples of applications, especially to changes of places and the conditions for stability. In all this entropy is a key concept.

Book excerpt: Statistical thermodynamics plays a vital linking role between quantum theory and chemical thermodynamics, yet students often find the subject unpalatable. In this updated version of a popular text, the authors overcome this by emphasising the concepts involved, in particular demystifying the partition function. They do not get bogged down in the mathematical niceties that are essential for a profound study of the subject but which can confuse the beginner. Strong emphasis is placed on the physical basis of statistical thermodynamics and the relations with experiment. After a clear exposition of the distribution laws, partition functions, heat capacities, chemical equilibria and kinetics, the subject is further illuminated by a discussion of low-temperature phenomena and spectroscopy. The coverage is brought right up to date with a chapter on computer simulation and a final section which ranges beyond the narrow limits usually associated with student texts to emphasise the common dependence of macroscopic behaviour on the properties of constituent atoms and molecules.Since first published in 1974 as ‘Entropy and Energy Levels’, the book has been very popular with students. This revised and updated version will no doubt serve the same needs.

Book excerpt: If a Writer would know how to behave himself with relation to Posterity; let him consider in old Books, what he finds, that he is glad to know; and what Omissions he most laments. Jonathan Swift This book emerges from a long story of teaching. I taught chemical engineering thermodynamics for about ten years at the University of Naples in the 1960s, and I still remember the awkwardness that I felt about any textbook I chose to consider-all of them seemed to be vague at best, and the standard of logical rigor seemed immensely inferior to what I could find in books on such other of the students in my first class subjects as calculus and fluid mechanics. One (who is now Prof. F. Gioia of the University of Naples) once asked me a question which I have used here as Example 4. 2-more than 20 years have gone by, and I am still waiting for a more intelligent question from one of my students. At the time, that question compelled me to answer in a way I didn't like, namely "I'll think about it, and I hope I'll have the answer by the next time we meet. " I didn't have it that soon, though I did manage to have it before the end of the course.

Book excerpt: Phase Equilibrium in Mixtures deals with phase equilibrium and the methods of correlating, checking, and predicting phase data. Topics covered range from latent heat and vapor pressure to dilute solutions, ideal and near-ideal solutions, and consistency tests. Molecular considerations and their use for the prediction and correlation of data are also discussed. Comprised of nine chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to the role of thermodynamics and the criteria for equilibrium between phases, along with fugacity and the thermodynamic functions of mixing. The discussion then turns to some of the phase phenomena which may be encountered in chemical engineering practice; methods of correlating and extending vapor pressure data and practical techniques for calculating latent heats from these data; the behavior of dilute solutions both at low and high pressures for reacting and non-reacting systems; and the behavior of ideal and near-ideal solutions. The remaining chapters explore non-ideal solutions at normal pressures; practical methods for testing the thermodynamic consistency of phase data; and the extent to which the broad aspects of phase behavior may be interpreted in the light of simple molecular considerations. This book is intended primarily for graduate chemical engineers but should also be of interest to those graduates in physics or chemistry who need to use phase equilibrium data.
