Book excerpt: Background: Despite decades of educational reform, significant disparities persist among Blackand Hispanic students resulting in adverse long-term economic, health, and legal outcomes.Research has focused on individual correlates and predictors of low educational attainment despite evidence of the impact of social and structural barriers. There is also no theoretical framework for determinants of educational attainment. This study addresses this gap by: 1)examining social and structural determinants of educational attainment; 2) examining synergistic interactions; and 3) offering preliminary evidence towards the development of a Social Determinants of Educational Attainment (SDOE) framework. Methods: Through the Social Determinants of Health framework lens, leveraging ten years of panel data from students in Iowa and Illinois public schools from third through twelfth grade (n= 1938), this study employs cross sectional analyses to test social and structural risk factors and education outcomes. Two multivariate logistic regression models examined associations between neighborhood crime and other social and structural risk factors (neighborhood income, school mobility) on educational attainment outcomes (eighth grade attendance and high school completion), controlling for sociodemographic variables (race, ethnicity, gender). Using Syndemics, two-way interactions were tested between risk factors and educational outcomes. Results: Neighborhood crime, neighborhood income, race, and gender were significantly associated with eighth grade attendance, and neighborhood crime and race were significantly associated with high school completion in bivariate analyses. Social and structural risk factorswere not significantly associated with educational attainment outcomes in multivariate models.
