Book excerpt: Two processes were studied in the period. The first was a study of oxidative desulfurization processes. Earlier research indicated that the use of copper-promoted oxidation of the organic and inorganic sulfur species in coal showed considerable promise. Initial studies utilizing CuCl2 demonstrated that the desulfurization yields were much lower than previously quoted. However, the experiments suggested that the reactant pathway showed promise and further investigations were conducted varying the solvent and replacing the Cl− anion with the OH− species. Ultimate analyses of these reactions are reported in addition to the experimental conditions used. Reactions using Cu(OH)2, CuCl2, and copper cyclohexane butyrate are investigated. The second process discussed was desulfurization using selective solvation. Supercritical ethanol was used to investigate the extent of organic sulfur removal from coal. (VC).

Ambedkar Balraj proposes an ultrasound-assisted coal particle breakage mechanism and explores aqueous and solvent-based ultrasonic techniques for de-ashing and de-sulfurization. Ambedkar designs a Taguchi L-27 fractional-factorial matrix to assess the individual effects of key process variables. In this volume he also describes process optimization and scale-up strategies. The author provides a mechanism-based model for ultrasonic reagent-based coal de-sulfurization, proposes a flow diagram for ultrasonic methods of high-throughput coal-wash and discusses the benefits of ultrasonic coal-wash. Coal will continue to be a major fuel source for the foreseeable future and this study helps improve its use by minimising ash and sulfur impurities.

This conference, like its predecessors, emphasizes desulfurization with papers on physical and chemical cleaning as well as post-treatment and fluid-bed combustion technologies. Of the 45 papers submitted, 15 papers deal with physical cleaning and 7 deal with chemical cleaning of coal, suggesting that a major emphasis is still be placed on pre-cleaning of coal.
