Book excerpt: Historians have tended to create a dualistic paradigm, which excludes a mediating biblical criticism in America. For polemical reasons, it has been easier for both conservatives and liberals to polarize moderates as the opposition or to ignore them altogether. Rather than the common modernist/fundamentalist paradigm, which is dualistic, a more accurate way to interpret the biblical criticism of late nineteenth century America is to construe a theological spectrum extending from right to left.

Scorgie's fascinating narrative makes plain the real distinction of Orr's mind. The present-day resurgence of the convictions that Orr championed suggests that in calling for continuity and combating theological novelty Orr had found the way of wisdom. . . . Book Synopsis Fixing the Indemnity by : Iain D. Campbell
Download or read book Fixing the Indemnity written by Iain D. Campbell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir George Adam Smith (1856-1942) was one of the leading Old Testament scholars in the late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Scottish church. As Free Church minister of QueenÕs Cross, Aberdeen (1882Ð92), Professor of Old Testament Language and Literature at the Free Church College, Glasgow (1892Ð1910), and Principal of Aberdeen University (1910Ð1935) he popularized modern criticism of the Old Testament. He was determined to show how such an approach to the Bible was compatible with evangelical faith, a position that never sat easily with the confessional position of the Scottish church, and the story of SmithÕs life is an investigation into the relationship between biblical scholarship and evangelical faith. In this new biography, Campbell has made extensive use of primary material, including Smith's letters and journals, to fill a gap in the literature on events within the Scottish church in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. This critical biography will be of use both to students of Scottish church history and students of Old Testament criticism, as well as raising issues that are of continuing importance for all who believe in confessional Christianity as well as in scholarly study of the biblical text.

Download or read book Encounter God written by Steve Curtis and published by Steve Curtis. This book was released on 2009-07-09 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone must respond to the Divine Imperative. Ultimately, everyone answers God with a "yes" or a "no." This book explores the ways in which we submit our response. An Absent faith is agnosticism as regards biblical Truth. Every person begins at this stage. Everyone who hears the gospel must then respond to it. And once one has been presented with the gospel, there are but two possible responses: "yes" or "no." If the response is no, there are two general options: a Belligerent opposition to God (i.e., atheism), or an acceptance of a Counterfeit religion. If the response is yes, there are likewise two variations: a poorly understood and Defeated faith that constricts more than it delivers, or, optimally, an Examined faith that exalts in the grace of God, delights in His promises, and worships Him in the beauty of His holiness. This book is intended to lead the readers to this final response through a reasonable and thoughtful consideration of the truths that challenge such a faith.
Download or read book Secret Scrolls written by Robert M. Price and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-12-27 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secret Scrolls is the very first examination of some forty novels in which someone discovers a new gospel. Sometimes it turns out to be a hoax; will it be debunked before it can work its mischief? If it proves genuine, will it be brought to light? Or will corrupt church officials manage to prevent it? The book evaluates what each author has to say about historical Jesus scholarship or New Testament research in general. Sometimes the authors have done their homework; other times they haven't bothered, and they wind up dishing up crazy rewrites of history and outlandish theories. These novels deal with abiding issues of faith, even without some new discovery. As soon as one engages in biblical apologetics, one has stepped onto the marshy ground of probabilistic arguments, an entirely different epistemology that automatically replaces simple faith. And so one comes to hold one's religious convictions more tentatively, having become genuinely vulnerable to new evidence. One may not remain a believer for long. On the other hand, one invites fanaticism if one's faith is dangerously predicated on the assurance that no new discovery will send one back to the drawing board. Secret Scrolls assesses what each author imagines it would take to derail and debunk Christianity. How mighty a blow must be dealt before the religion would fall? Dan Brown's notion that a married Jesus would debunk the Nicene Creed is laughable. As Wilbert Francis Howard once argued in his brief and fascinating history of New Testament research, there is a genuine romance of New Testament scholarship, and many of us are delighted to have the adventure continue in the speculative imaginations of capable novelists. These books can both entertain and educate, and so will Secret Scrolls.
