Book excerpt: In this long-awaited volume, Jeremy Shearmur and Piers Norris Turner bring to light Popper's most important unpublished and uncollected writings from the time of The Open Society until his death in 1994. After The Open Society: Selected Social and Political Writings reveals the development of Popper's political and philosophical thought during and after the Second World War, from his early socialism through to the radical humanitarianism of The Open Society. The papers in this collection, many of which are available here for the first time, demonstrate the clarity and pertinence of Popper's thinking on such topics as religion, history, Plato and Aristotle, while revealing a lifetime of unwavering political commitment. After The Open Society illuminates the thought of one of the twentieth century's greatest philosophers and is essential reading for anyone interested in the recent course of philosophy, politics, history and society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: María José Falcón y Tella invites us on a fascinating journey through the world of law and literature, travelling through the different eras and exploring eternal and as such current issues such as justice, power, resistance, vengeance, rights, and duties. This is an unending conversation, which brings us back to Sophocles and Dickens, Cervantes and Kafka, Dostoyevsky and Melville, among many others. There are many ways to approach the concept of “Law and Literature”. In the classical manner, the author distinguishes three paths: the Law of Literature, involving a technical approach to the literary theme; Law as Literature, a hermeneutical and rhetorical approach to examining legal texts; and finally, Law in Literature, which is undoubtedly the most fertile and documented perspective (the fundamental part of the work focusses on this direction). This timely volume offers an introduction to this enormous field of study, which was born in the United States over a century ago and is currently taking root in the European continent.

Posner, Wojciech Sadurski, Marxism, or Feminist Theories. In the second part of the work, María José Falcón y Tella deals with some of the principal themes relating to justice, such as punishment, civil disobedience, conscientious objection, just war, conflict of duties, and tolerance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GAVIOTAS, For the recovery of Earth’s skin There is a new start towards the world. One age that Mario Calderon Rivera, outstanding thinker and humanist, called Renaissance in the sense of both the Italian Renaissance as a change of mind of man to himself, and the contemporary one as a change of mind from man towards nature. The Renaissance, led by this brilliant saying of Leonardo da Vinci: "Everything comes from everything, and everything is made out of everything, and everything returns into everything" especially in a round planet. This also comes to be true in Centro "Las Gaviotas" where they achieved, among other things, the reawakening of the Amazon rainforest in the Colombian savannas of Orinoco. There they join the community welfare with the wealth generated by the sustainable use of tropical biodiversity, which, being located in the equatorial zone, has one of the highest rates of biological productivity. Within this context, Mario Calderon, travels through the last 60 years showing the ideas of the human being when he began to reflect on the effects of his action on Earth. They consist of a new attitude towards nature, seeing himself as being part of one system, with it he can coexist without destroying, understanding their connections, i.e. its complexity. Gaviotas age is this way of thinking. The author in honor of Gaviotas and its founder, Paolo Lugari, sets the theoretical foundations of the progress mankind has made in this respect since the last half century. Gaviotas is an example, a path, but at the same time an outpost of a bioculture that makes its way to protect both human life as well as that from others, which ultimately are subjected to the recovery of the vegetable skin of Earth, by the increase in biomass, as this determines the dynamic stability of the composition of the atmosphere of 99%, of nitrogen and oxygen If this composition would be disturbed by the continuing decline in biomass it would make impossible for human life to exist, something much more serious than global warming. Just warming is only a reductionist analysis of the issue. Development is seen now in productive harmony with nature, without undermining the very foundations of civilization. With an extensive knowledge of the authors who have made the ecological thinking trends of our time, Calderón contextualizes Gaviotas in the present world highlighting its conceptual contributions and its innovative achievements, always pointing to a decent lifestyle without denying the modernity.

Book excerpt: After reflecting on his support of a losing Democrat for president, George Soros steps back to revisit his views on why George Bush's policies around the world fall short in the arenas most important to Soros: democracy, human rights and open society. As a survivor of the Holocaust and a life-long proponent of free expression, Soros understands the meaning of freedom. And yet his differences with George Bush, another proponent of freedom, are profound. In this powerful essay Soros spells out his views and how they differ from the president's. He reflects on why the Democrats may have lost the high ground on these values issues and how they might reclaim it. As he has in his recent books, On Globalization and The Bubble of American Supremacy , Soros uses facts, anecdotes, personal experience and philosophy to illuminate a major topic in a way that both enlightens and inspires.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
