Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's all too often that designers leave a meeting with clients feeling as if they've been speaking an entirely different language. Graphically Speaking solves such communication problems by breaking down client-designer dialogue into something both parties can understand. It visually defines more than 30 of the most common words that clients use to describe what they want in a design. Vague, possibly confusing terms -- words like elegant or powerful or warm -- are made specific as they relate to actual design style. Entries provide visual reference materials including color combinations, fonts and final designs so that terms are defined both literally and visually. Because of the structure of the book, it's really three must-have books in one -- a client communication guide, a designer reference and an inspiring collection of top design projects. Lisa Buchanan is the Art Director of HOW Design Books. Before joining HOW, she worked with clients on freelance projects including logos, web sites, letterhead and business cards -- all while developing her insights into client-designer relationships. Lisa lives in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The architectural historian and critic Kenneth Frampton 'never recovered' from the force of Hannah Arendt's teaching at The New School in New York. The philosopher Richard J. Bernstein considers her the most perceptive political theorist and observer of 'dark times' (a concept which, drawing from Brecht, she made her own). Building on the revival of interest in Hannah Arendt, and on the increasing turn in design towards the expanded field of the social, this unique book uses insights and quotations drawn from Arendt's major writings (The Human Condition; The Origins of Totalitarianism, Men in Dark Times) to assemble a new kind of lexicon for politics, designing and acting today. Taking 56 terms – from Action, Beginnings and Creativity through Mortality, Natality, and Play to Superfluity, Technology and Violence – and inviting designers and scholars of design world-wide to contribute, Designing in Dark Times: An Arendtian Lexicon, offers up an extraordinary range of short essays that use moments and quotations from Arendt's thought as the starting points for reflection on how these terms can be conceived for contemporary design and political praxis. Neither simply dictionary nor glossary, the lexicon brings together designing and political philosophy to begin to create a new language for acting and designing against dark times.

Book excerpt: Each chapter deals with a different technique from which we can best represent and make explicit the forms of knowledge used by designers. The book explores whether design knowledge is special, and attempts to get to the root of where design knowledge comes from. Crucially, it focuses on how designers use drawings in communicating their ideas and how they ‘converse’ with them as their designs develop. It also shows how experienced designers use knowledge differently to novices suggesting that design ‘expertise’ can be developed. Overall, this book builds a layout of the kinds of skill, knowledge and understanding that make up what we call designing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sound is half the picture, and since the 1960s, film sound not only has rivaled the innovative imagery of contemporary Hollywood cinema, but in some ways has surpassed it in status and privilege because of the emergence of sound design. This in-depth study by William Whittington considers the evolution of sound design not only through cultural and technological developments during the last four decades, but also through the attitudes and expectations of filmgoers. Fans of recent blockbuster films, in particular science fiction films, have come to expect a more advanced and refined degree of film sound use, which has changed the way they experience and understand spectacle and storytelling in contemporary cinema. The book covers recent science fiction cinema in rich and compelling detail, providing a new sounding of familiar films, while offering insights into the constructed nature of cinematic sound design. This is accomplished by examining the formal elements and historical context of sound production in movies to better appreciate how a film sound track is conceived and presented.Whittington focuses on seminal science fiction films that have made specific advances in film sound, including 2001: A Space Odyssey, THX 1138, Star Wars, Alien, Blade Runner (original version and director's cut), Terminator 2: Judgment Day and The Matrix trilogy and games—milestones of the entertainment industry's technological and aesthetic advancements with sound. Setting itself apart from other works, the book illustrates through accessible detail and compelling examples how swiftly such advancements in film sound aesthetics and technology have influenced recent science fiction cinema, and examines how these changes correlate to the history, theory, and practice of contemporary Hollywood filmmaking.

Book excerpt: In 1991 publishers Uitgeverij De Buitenkant and Spectatorpers published a small book entitled "Romanée en Trinité: Historisch origineel en systematisch slordig". The author set the Dutch text by hand, using Jan van Krimpen's Romanée, and printed 500 copies on a Victoria platen press. Drukkerij Jan de Jong (Uitgeverij De Buitenkant's in-house press) printed the type specimen section in offset. By 1991 the Autologic phototypesetter had already been phased out, Enschedé having switched to digital typesetting. Fortunately the author was able to use the phototypeset positives for the 1982 type specimen. Enschedé had given Peter Matthias Noordzij the job of digitizing Trinité and in the second half of Romanée en Trinité the author was able to give a foretaste of the results. This book contains the full text of Romanée en Trinité, but it was technically impossible to include the hand-set specimen.
