Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed introduction to organic radical polymers and open-shell macromolecules. Functional macromolecules have led to marked increases in a wide range of technologies, and one of the fastest growing of these fields is that of organic electronic materials and devices. To date, synthetic and organic electronic device efforts have focused almost exclusively on closed-shell polymers despite the promise of open-shell macromolecules in myriad applications. This text represents the first comprehensive review of the design, synthesis, characterization, and device applications of open-shell polymers. In particular, it will summarize the impressive synthetic and device performance efforts that have been achieved with respect to energy storage, energy conversion, magnetic, and spintronic applications. By combining comprehensive reviews with a wealth of informative figures, the text provides the reader with a complete “molecules-to-modules” understanding of the state of the art in open-shell macromolecules. Moreover, the monograph highlights future directions for open-shell polymers in order to allow the reader to be part of the community that continues to build the field. In this way, the reader will gain a rapid understanding of the field and will have a clear pathway to utilize these materials in next-generation applications.

Book excerpt: Shaping new materials that are tailored to meet the specific electronic, chemical, and physical demands in their applications - this is the role of the materials chemist. Although the field of organic electronics has witnessed significant advances since its inception, the toolkit of efficacious materials has been entrusted to a few choice molecular platforms. In an effort to expand this limited library of compounds, new materials based on various polycyclic hydrocarbons have been synthesized and characterized. The pigment quinacridone was incorporated into water/alcohol-soluble electron transport layers that were deposited on top of existing organic-soluble active layers in organic light-emitting diodes and organic photovoltaics, thereby enhancing the transport of electrons and hence the device efficiencies. A strained polycyclic hydrocarbon, decacyclene, was functionalized with three imidegroups to generate a new class of non-fullerene acceptors for organic photovoltaics. A heteroheptacene, dinaphthocarbazole, was characterized for its hole transporting properties in organic field-effect transistors. Finally, various substituted imidazolium-based ionic liquids were synthesized and characterized for their potential use as organic electrolytes in lithium batteries.

Book excerpt: The work presented in this thesis is primarily concerned with the synthesis and characterization of large, linear heteroacenes and their derivatives. We have been able to significantly expand on the types of materials available for application in organic electronic device architectures. In particular, the work focused on solution processible and novel derivatives of thiadiazoles, diazatetracenes, diazapentacenes, tetrazapentacences, and N, N-dihydrotetraazaheptacene. Extensive computational studies have been performed in order to better understand the optoelectronic properties of these materials. Although no devices have been fabricated that show appreciable hole or electron mobility, the properties of these materials are very promising. Besides our work on organic electronic materials for application in optoelectronic devices, we have also been able to develop, via the Click reaction, a series of aqueous metal sensors for copper (II), nickel (II), and silver (I) based upon fluorescence quenching. The use of a modified Stern-Volmer equation was necessary to fit the data in order to obtain binding constants. The exploration of new materials and their properties in the area of organic electronics is an exciting field for the synthetic organic chemist, as the goals associated with this work strive to impact humanity in a positive manner by reducing energy costs.

Book excerpt: During this initial two month period of activity we have already made progress in our program to learn to design organic conducting materials. We are concentrating our efforts mainly, but not exclusively, on the D ... A ... D and A ... D ... A molecular motifs outlined in the original proposal. As noted in the original proposal the archetypal molecular unit 1 is potentially endowed with a number of properties which are considered to be necessary conditions for electrical conduction in organic charge-transfer complexes: the stoichiometric donor:acceptor (D:A) ratio is predesigned into the molecule; appropriate chemical variations in A and D may be employed to modify the degree of charge-transfer from D to A and to obtain the desired delocalized electronic state. In the framework of this program we have completed the synthesis of two additional members of the family (2), and crystals of sufficient quality for structure determination have been obtained for 2b and 2c.

Book excerpt: Infochemistry: Information Processing at the Nanoscale, defines a new field of science, and describes the processes, systems and devices at the interface between chemistry and information sciences. The book is devoted to the application of molecular species and nanostructures to advanced information processing. It includes the design and synthesis of suitable materials and nanostructures, their characterization, and finally applications of molecular species and nanostructures for information storage and processing purposes. Divided into twelve chapters; the first three chapters serve as an introduction to the basic concepts of digital information processing, its development, limitations and finally introduces some alternative concepts for prospective technologies. Chapters four and five discuss traditional low-dimensional metals and semiconductors and carbon nanostructures respectively, while further chapters discuss Photoelectrochemical photocurrent switching and related phenomena and self-organization and self-assembly. Chapters eight, nine and ten discuss information processing at the molecular level, and eleven describes information processing in natural systems. The book concludes with a discussion of the future prospects for the field. Further topics: Traditional electronic device development is rapidly approaching a limit, so molecular scale information processing is critical in order to meet increasing demand for high computational power Characterizes chemical systems not according to their chemical nature, but according to their role as prospective information technology elements Covers the application of molecular species and nanostructures as molecular scale logic gates, switches, memories, and complex computing devices This book will be of particular interest to researchers in nanoelectronics, organic electronics, optoelectronics, chemistry and materials science.

Book excerpt: Organic Field Effect Transistors presents the state of the art in organic field effect transistors (OFETs), with a particular focus on the materials and techniques useful for making integrated circuits. The monograph begins with some general background on organic semiconductors, discusses the types of organic semiconductor materials suitable for making field effect transistors, the fabrication processes used to make integrated Circuits, and appropriate methods for measurement and modeling. Organic Field Effect Transistors is written as a basic introduction to the subject for practitioners. It will also be of interest to researchers looking for references and techniques that are not part of their subject area or routine. A synthetic organic chemist, for example, who is interested in making OFETs may use the book more as a device design and characterization reference. A thin film processing electrical engineer, on the other hand, may be interested in the book to learn about what types of electron carrying organic semiconductors may be worth trying and learning more about organic semiconductor physics.
