Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to describe an approach for considering aesthetics as integral to highway design. By 'aesthetics' I intend the true meaning of the word, enhancing the visual quality of the highway setting, integrating the road with the landscape, improving the overall form of the roadway. I do not mean simply 'beautifying' the road with trees and shrubs once the route has been selected and the road has been engineered. Consideration of aesthetics simply cannot be added to evaluation or engineering. I will, however, suggest an approach for reconsidering aesthetics, right along with geometrics and operation and safety, etc. in every stage of highway planning and design starting at the preliminary stages. A fully integrated multidisciplinary approach is essential to ensure that unquantifiable environmental amenities and values are considered along with economic, technical and quantifiable environmental concerns in highway planning and design. This means using a design team of engineers, landscape architects and planners in all phases of route selection, preliminary design and detailed design. If we assume that design is the art of making technology (in this case highways) livable, aesthetics - the integration of the highway with the landscape - should be at the foundation of the design process. It should be inherent in the design process, not only evaluated once the route has been selected or the highway has been engineered. And if it is, it need not be evaluated, because it is the basis upon which all routes or alignments were generated. We are realizing that highway design is more than an engineering problem. To reflect a higher, more responsible concern for the road's aesthetic quality, design requires a collaborative effort among many professions. Book Synopsis A Guide for Achieving Flexibility in Highway Design by :
Download or read book A Guide for Achieving Flexibility in Highway Design written by and published by AASHTO. This book was released on 2004 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Context-sensitive solutions (CSS) reflect the need to consider highway projects as more than just transportation facilities. Depending on how highway projects are integrated into the community, they can have far-reaching impacts beyond their traffic or transportation function. CSS is a comprehensive process that brings stakeholders together in a positive, proactive environment to develop projects that not only meet transportation needs, but also improve or enhance the community. Achieving a flexible, context-sensitive design solution requires designers to fully understand the reasons behind the processes, design values, and design procedures that are used. This AASHTO Guide shows highway designers how to think flexibly, how to recognize the many choices and options they have, and how to arrive at the best solution for the particular situation or context. It also strives to emphasize that flexible design does not necessarily entail a fundamentally new design process, but that it can be integrated into the existing transportation culture. This publication represents a major step toward institutionalizing CSS into state transportation departments and other agencies charged with transportation project development.

In almost every case, if we are successful--and are able to keep too many signs and similar hardware from intruding--we will have completed a project that people will consider to be aesthetic.

Book Synopsis State-of-the-art of Three-dimensional Highway Geometric Design by :
Download or read book State-of-the-art of Three-dimensional Highway Geometric Design written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometric design is an important phase in the highway design process that is directly related to traffic safety. Highway elements should be jointly designed to account for such design criteria as sight distance, vehicle stability, driver comfort, drainage, and aesthetics. Intuitively, such a design should be based on a three-dimensional (3-D) analysis. This paper reviews the current practice and research work related to each design criterion with emphasis on the conformity with the 3-D nature of the highway. Current standards are based mainly on a two-dimensional (2-D) analysis that does not guarantee a satisfactory design. Recently, several research efforts have been expended in the 3-D highway analysis with sight distance being the most researched area. Analytical models and computer software have been developed to accurately model 3-D daytime and nighttime sight distances. Roads designed using current 2-D standards may compromised safety or economy. Different models are currently available to simulate the forces acting on a vehicle in 3-D. These models show that the point-mass formula for modeling vehicle dynamics in the current standards can be inaccurate. Current standards contain recommendations for drainage of surface water, but explicit quantitative coordination of combined alignments is lacking, Furthermore, research is still needed to study the effect of alignment coordination on highway aesthetics and driver's perception of information.
