Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing a comprehensive book on satellite communications requires the com mand of many technical disciplines and the availability of up-to-date information on international recommendations, system architectures, and equipment stand ards. It is therefore necessary to involve many authors, each possessing a good level of knowledge in a particular discipline. The problem of using a coherent and unambiguous set of definitions and basic terms has been solved by including in the book all the background information needed for understanding satellite communication systems, without any major reference to other textbooks specializing in particular disciplines. The obvious consequence of this approach has been the large size of the book, with the advantages, however, of practically complete independence from other books, more systematic discussion of the subject matter, and better readability. After the required background information, emphasis has been placed on the discussion of techniques and system design criteria rather than on specific equipment implementation or description of particular systems. The book may be divided in five parts as follows: • The first five chapters provide most of the required background information. • Chapter 6 is an introductory outline of satellite communication systems. • Chapters 7 to 13 deal with the various aspects of technical system design. • Chapter 14 discusses system economics. • Chapter 15 provides a brief insight into some foreseeable future develop ments of satellite communications.

Book excerpt: [ANGLÈS] The CubeSat program provides a cost-effective solution to the educational institutions and private firms, around the world, willing to put their satellites in orbit, which are no bigger than a 10 cm cube, and weigh less than 1.33 kg. Benefitting from such program is a CubeSat from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 3Cat-1, which aims to test various scientific payloads in a space environment. Like most of the satellites, a CubeSat requires a harmonious interactions among different subsystems to function properly. The thesis focuses on one such subsystem, the communications subsystem, which is responsible for establishing a communication link between the CubeSat and the ground stations. The communication can take different form, from transmitting only the status of the satellite to transferring payloads data to earth or responding to the tele-commands uploaded from the ground station. The report emphasises on the detailed design and test of the communications subsys- tem consisting of the RF front-end, the antenna and the electronic hardware. It also focuses on different experiments conducted to optimise the design. Furthermore, the work outlined in this thesis can be extended to future CubeSat projects.

Book excerpt: Nuclear event induced atmospheric scintillation can have an adverse effect on communication systems of all types. Satellite communication systems are particularly susceptible to channel disruption resulting from atmospheric scintillation. This report documents the preliminary results of an effort to develop a tool to assist communication system designers. Various simulation and models attempt to characterize the dynamics of a nuclear perturbed atmosphere. The report focuses on resolving apparent differences of primary interest to the context of Radio Frequency phase relationships are addressed relative to a number of commonly used transmission schemes. Keywords: Fact/Slow fade; Rayleigh; Multi-link capability; Fade time; Encode/decode binary; Convolution; Concatenated; Diversity-frequency; Spatial; Modems; Phase shift keyers; Frequency shift keyers; Viterbi coding.

Book excerpt: Space-based observations have transformed our understanding of Earth, its environment, the solar system and the universe at large. During past decades, driven by increasingly advanced science questions, space observatories have become more sophisticated and more complex, with costs often growing to billions of dollars. Although these kinds of ever-more-sophisticated missions will continue into the future, small satellites, ranging in mass between 500 kg to 0.1 kg, are gaining momentum as an additional means to address targeted science questions in a rapid, and possibly more affordable, manner. Within the category of small satellites, CubeSats have emerged as a space-platform defined in terms of (10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm)- sized cubic units of approximately 1.3 kg each called "U's." Historically, CubeSats were developed as training projects to expose students to the challenges of real-world engineering practices and system design. Yet, their use has rapidly spread within academia, industry, and government agencies both nationally and internationally. In particular, CubeSats have caught the attention of parts of the U.S. space science community, which sees this platform, despite its inherent constraints, as a way to affordably access space and perform unique measurements of scientific value. The first science results from such CubeSats have only recently become available; however, questions remain regarding the scientific potential and technological promise of CubeSats in the future. Achieving Science with CubeSats reviews the current state of the scientific potential and technological promise of CubeSats. This report focuses on the platform's promise to obtain high- priority science data, as defined in recent decadal surveys in astronomy and astrophysics, Earth science and applications from space, planetary science, and solar and space physics (heliophysics); the science priorities identified in the 2014 NASA Science Plan; and the potential for CubeSats to advance biology and microgravity research. It provides a list of sample science goals for CubeSats, many of which address targeted science, often in coordination with other spacecraft, or use "sacrificial," or high-risk, orbits that lead to the demise of the satellite after critical data have been collected. Other goals relate to the use of CubeSats as constellations or swarms deploying tens to hundreds of CubeSats that function as one distributed array of measurements.

Crosby, International Space University e-mail: [email protected] For the sixth annual ISU Symposium the theme was "Smaller Satellites: Bigger Business? Concepts, Applications and Markets for Micro/Nanosatellites in a New Information World". Thus, the Symposium addressed the crucial question: are small satellites the saviour of space programmes around the world It did this from the unique perspective of the International Space today? University - the interdisciplinary, international and intercultural perspective. This Symposium brought together a variety of people working on small satellites - engineers, scientists, planners, providers, operators, policy makers and business executives, together with representatives from regulatory bodies, from national and international organizations, and from the finance sector, and also entrepreneurs. Discussion and debate were encouraged, based on the papers presented and those published here.
