Book excerpt: To date, superconducting spoke cavities have been designed, developed, and tested for particle velocities up to?00̃.6, but there is a growing interest in possible applications of multispoke cavities for high-velocity applications. We have explored the design parameter space for low-frequency, high-velocity, double-spoke superconducting cavities in order to determine how each design parameter affects the electromagnetic properties, in particular the surface electromagnetic fields and the shunt impedance. We present detailed design for cavities operating at 325 and 352 MHz and optimized for?0=̃0.82 and 1.

In addition, spoke cavities offer a large velocity acceptance which means we must perform a detailed analysis of the particle velocity dependence for each mode's R/Q. We present here a study of the HOM properties of two-spoke cavities designed for high-velocity applications. Frequencies, R/Q and field profiles of HOMs have been calculated and are reported.

Book excerpt: Over the past several decades major advances in accelerators have resulted from breakthroughs in accelerator science and accelerator technology. After the introduction of a new accelerator physics concept or the implementation of a new technology, a leap in accelerator performance followed. A well-known representation of these advances is the Livingston chart, which shows an exponential growth of accelerator performance over the last seven or eight decades. One of the breakthrough accelerator technologies that support this exponential growth is superconducting technology. Recognizing this major technological advance, we dedicate Volume 5 of Reviews of Accelerator Science and Technology (RAST) to superconducting technology and its applications. Two major applications are superconducting magnets (SC magnets) and superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities. SC magnets provide much higher magnetic field than their room-temperature counterparts, thus allowing accelerators to reach higher energies with comparable size as well as much reduced power consumption. SRF technology allows field energy storage for continuous wave applications and energy recovery, in addition to the advantage of tremendous power savings and better particle beam quality. In this volume, we describe both technologies and their applications. We also include discussion of the associated R&D in superconducting materials and the future prospects for these technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the successful development of a niobium coaxial half-wave structure we have designed, built and tested a new half-wave geometry: the spoke resonator. This geometry is better suited for high frequency resonators and for the acceleration of high velocity ions. The prototype cavity is a 2-gap structure resonating at 855 MHz, and optimized for particle velocity of 0.30 c. It is easier to manufacture than the coaxial half-wave resonator and the geometry can be straightforwardly extended to multigap designs. Rf-tests have been performed on this cavity both prior to and after high temperature annealing. An accelerating gradient of 7.2 MV/m (cw) and 7.8 MV/m (pulsed) was observed at 4.2 K. After annealing, a low power Q0 of 1.2 x 108 was observed with small Q degradation due to field emission at high accelerating fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In another contribution to this conference the design of superconducting cavities for low velocity proton beams will be reported. Besides an optimization of the rf properties of the accelerating [pi]-mode, other modes, possibly excited by the traversing proton beam, need to be regarded. The full spectrum of modes in [beta] = 0.64 and [beta] = 0.82 5-cell cavities, as proposed for the Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) facility, has been calculated up to frequencies higher than 2.0 GHz. These have been evaluated for their potential to affect the beam. The presence of [open-quotes]trapped[close-quotes] modes has also been investigated. In addition to the specific mode spectrum, the total power deposited into the cavities by the beam has been determined from the induced wake-fields. Due to the operation with beams below the velocity of light, extreme care was required to prevent incorrect results by wave reflections from the boundaries of the calculation volume. The simulations indicate that a power deposition of up to 17 W per cavity can be expected in the worst case. This power might have to be removed by higher order mode couplers, which is a technically feasible task. Transporting this power out to a room temperature dump does not even noticeably increase the requirements to the cryogenic system. Also for the prevention of beam break-up effects and for suppression of resonant excitation of specific higher order modes (HOMs) it is of interest to investigate the removal of this HOM-power. Different approaches to implement this removal technically are entertained.

Book excerpt: DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevSTAB.8.042003 Three 6-cell 805 MHz superconducting cavity prototypes for acceleration in the velocity range of about 0.4 to 0.53 times the speed of light have been fabricated and tested. The quality factors (Q_0) were between 7Ã 10^9 and 1.4Ã 10^10 at the design field (accelerating gradient of 8â 10 MV/m). The maximum gradients reached were between 11 and 16 MV/m; in each case, the Q_0 values were?3Ã 10^9 at the maximum gradient. The design, fabrication, surface preparation, and rf testing of the 6-cell cavities are reported in this paper.

Book excerpt: Superconducting (SC) cavities presently used for acceleration of ions in the velocity range from 0.01c to 0.3c are based frequently on quarter-wave resonators (QWR). Numerous types of QWR cavities over a frequency range from 50 to 240 MHz have been built or are proposed for a variety of applications. Recent studies have revealed an important drawback of the QWR: the presence of beam steering fields in the aperture [1]. We have shown that this effect can be eliminated by appropriate shaping of the drift tubes [2]. There is, however, another problem in QWR drift-tube design caused by quadrupole terms in the transverse Lorentz force which can cause appreciable emittance growth when the linac lattice includes transverse focusing by SC solenoids. Solenoidal focusing provides a compact lattice and maximizes transverse acceptance while maintaining low longitudinal emittance. We discuss the design of QWR cavity geometries which eliminate both the dipole and higher order components in the equations of motion in the transverse planes, while keeping the ratio of surface-to-accelerating field low. The resulting QWR designs minimize emittance growth, which is critical in some applications.

Book excerpt: This paper presents experimental data characterizing the electro-mechanical properties of superconducting spoke-loaded cavities developed for high-intensity ion-linac applications, such as the cw ANL Advanced Exotic Beams Laboratory (AEBL) driver linac and the pulsed FNAL High Intensity Neutrino Source (HINS, now project X) proton driver linac. High-gradient cw operation at 4.2 K can produce violent boiling in the liquid helium coolant causing microphonic frequency noise. A spoke cavity designed to minimize the effects of helium pressure on RF eigenfrequency, the total microphonic induced RF frequency variations, were found to be on the level of the phase noise in the reference oscillator. To determine the pulsed cavity RF performance, the Lorentz transfer function was measured and used to predict the dynamic detuning in pulsed operation. There is good agreement between the predicted fit and the measured data, demonstrating the utility of the Lorentz transfer function, which can compl.
