This book is organized into two sections encompassing 16 chapters that discuss the theories behind the different techniques of flow measurement and the performance of flowmeters and their practical application to determining blood flow volume in the tissues and organs. Considerable chapters are devoted to various methods of blood measurement, including dilution, transport, and thermal techniques, as well as the effect of catheter sampling on the shape of indicator dilution curves. Other chapters are concerned with the possible errors in the application of indicator dilution techniques and the types of dilution indicator, and measurement of indicator concentration. A chapter is devoted to the advantages and disadvantages of thermistor flowmeter. The last chapter focuses on the design of a thermal dilution catheter. The book can provide useful information to physicists, bioengineers, surgeons, students, and researchers.

This book was released on 1977 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is shown that existing types of industrial flowmeters have their limitations. Advantages of the ultrasonic cross correlation flowmeter are discussed and two major design aspects of the flowmeter, ultrasonics and electronics have been fully assessed. The transducer requirements for a correlation flowmeter are examined. A totally new theoretical approach to transducer design is presented and a practical construction of a transducer is described in detail. Transducer design, operating frequency and crystal size are shown to be interdependent and suggestions for their selections are discussed. Electrical and mechanical matching of the transducer is also included. Various techniques of calibrating and testing the transducers have been examined. Comparison of ultrasonic beam shapes and transmissions around the pipe wall at different frequencies is presented. From the experimental evidence, to achieve an ideal acoustical system, a high operating frequency is recommended. Evaluation of possible clip-on mountings is reviewed and an improved method of mounting using an oil coupling is recommended. Several possible modulation mechanisms are reviewed and a new modulation mechanism, using multipath reflections and standing wave ratio, is introduced. This theory is used to explain the instability of an open loop system. Three demodulation methods for extracting the flow noise signals have been investigated both theoretically and experimentally and results are presented and compared. From the results presented, amplitude demodulation is shown to be the best way of extracting the flow noise signals. A closed loop concept, for stabilising the performance of the flowmeter against environmental changes, is formulated and three different ways of practically implementing it using a phase locked loop circuit are presented. Instability of a closed loop system for a clip-on flowmeter is described. The problem of pipe vibration has also been examined. An alternative approach of controlling the flowmeter performance using a phase shifting network is introduced and practical results are discussed. This control scheme is shown to be repeatable and controllable in a predictable manner.

Book Synopsis An Industrial Correlation Flowmeter by : John Stephen Battye
Download or read book An Industrial Correlation Flowmeter written by John Stephen Battye and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic principle of the cross-correlation method of flow measurement is described with diagrams and mathematics. The subject of the thesis is put into perspective by a brief description of previous work in the subjects of fluidynamics and correlation flowmetering. Attention is brought to previous work done in the particular field of ultrasonic correlation flowmetering. By referring to previous work in fluidynamics, signal handling and correlation flowmetering, the author shows that there are more factors influencing the ultrasonic correlation flowmeter's performance than have previously been considered. He develops a discussion about these factors and points out how they might be expected to influence the flowmeter's performance. The flowmeter's sensor head and the acoustic sensors are illustrated and described. There is a brief description of the general purpose, laboratory correlator and the associated spectrum display unit which was used for many of the experiments. The mode of action of the industrial, self tracking, two-point-difference, flowmeter correlator is outlined. A detailed section on the sensor electronics describes the reasons for choosing phase demodulation, how a phase demodulator works and the design and reasons for the novel sensor electronics devised by the author. The flow rig is described and illustrated. Pour preliminary experiments are described together with results which show their outcome. The experiments are; the determination of the sensor electronics phase/voltage transfer characteristics, observation of the sensor's resonances and acoustic standing waves in the metered fluid, demonstration that a novel feature of the author's sensor electronics was necessary and worked and demonstration that the flowmeter was capable of working on perfectly clean liquids....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the results of an investigation into the design parameters of an externally mounted ultrasonic cross correlation flowmeter. A set of operational requirements are presented for the acoustical system and from these requirements a theoretical design is formulated for the ultrasonic transducer. The selection of an operating frequency is shown to depend on the operational requirements and both the transducer design and operating frequency are shown to be interdependent. Construction of the transducer is shown to affect the mode of operation and the governing relationship is presented. Transducers built to the theoretical design are tested in practice and shown to meet the operational requirements. A study of transducer mountings to pipe sections is also presented and in the light of experimental evidence an improved method of transducer mounting is outlined. Efficient methods of coupling the electrical energy into the transducer and the acoustical energy into the pipe section are investigated. Also, two methods of assessing a given transducer's characteristics are explained and their shortcomings highlighted. Further, it is shown that the selection of a high operating frequency overcomes the problems of acoustical cross-talk between the two transmitted ultrasonic beams. The determination of a suitable method of demodulating the received signal is investigated, both theoretically and practically. The theoretical results show that in a closed conduit, amplitude modulation of an ultrasonic beam will predominate. Practical observations confirm this and the expected modulation levels are achieved. The practical results also show that an amplitude demodulated signal is less susceptible to interference by extraneous noise such as that produced by plant vibrations. These results are confirmed for all the flowmeter configurations tested. A closed loop control scheme using a phase locked loop system is developed, whereby the flowmeter will be able to compensate for environmental changes. Three combinations of this system are presented and their poor performance and inability to control the flowmeter, investigated and explained. The analysis used to explain the above is extended to develop a further control scheme using a phase shift network in one channel of the flowmeter. This system is shown to be more stable and controllable than previous systems and is less susceptible to extraneous noise. A closed loop control scheme incorporating a system of this type is presented. Suggestions are made to further investigate the selection of operating frequency, transducer mounting and to determine the most suitable strategy for implementing a phase shift type closed loop control scheme.
