Book excerpt: Despite significant development in earthquake analysis and design in the last 50 years or more, different structures related to industry, infra structure and human habitats get destroyed with monotonic regularity under strong motion earthquake. Even the recent earthquake in Mexico in September 2017 killed a number of people and destroyed national assets amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars. Careful evaluation of the technology reveals that, despite significant development in earthquake engineering, most of the books that are available on the market for reference are primarily focused towards buildings and framed type structures. It is accepted that during an earthquake it is buildings that get destroyed most and has been the biggest killers of human life. Yet, there are a number of structures like retaining walls, water tanks, Bunkers, silos, tall chimneys, bridge piers etc that are equally susceptible to earthquake, and if damaged can cause serious trouble and great economic distress. Unfortunately, many of these systems are analyzed by techniques that are too simplified, unrealistic/obsolete or nothing is done about them, ignoring completely the seismic effects, as no guidelines exist for their analysis/design (like seismic analysis of counterfort retaining walls or dynamic pressures on bunker walls etc.). This highly informative book addresses many of these items for which there exists a significant gap in technology and yet remain an important life line of considerable commercial significance. The book is an outcome of authors' academic research and practice across the four continents (USA, Europe, Africa and Asia) in the last thirty two years, where many of these technologies have been put in practice, that got tested against real time earthquakes. All methods presented herein have been published previously in peer reviewed research journals and international conferences of repute before being put to practice. Professionals working in international EPC and consulting engineering firms, graduates taking advanced courses in earthquake engineering, doctoral scholars pursuing research in earthquake engineering in the area of dynamic soil structure interaction (DSSI) and advanced under graduates wanting to self-learn and update themselves on earthquake analysis and design are greatly benefited from this book.

Barre and L. L. Sammet, published by John Wiley & Sons in 1950 as one of a series of textbooks in agricultural engineering spon sored by the Ferguson Foundation, Detroit, Michigan. Light Agricul tural and Industrial Structures: Analysis and Design will be useful as an undergraduate student textbook for junior-or senior-level compre hensive courses on structural analysis and design in steel, wood, and concrete, and as a reference work for practicing engineers. Emphasis is on basic analysis and design procedures. The book should be useful in any country where there is a need to design structures for agricul tural production and processing. It is assumed that readers have had prerequisite course work in engineering mechanics and strength of materials as typically taught to undergraduate engineering students. The scope of this book is wide; it might be difficult for instructors and students to cover all of the chapters in a typical three credit-hour course. The instructor will need to assess his own situation and scheduling constraints. More or less time could be spent on chapters one through five, depending on the capability the students already have in analysis of statically deter minate and indeterminate structures. Two to three weeks might then be allocated for study of each of the last six chapters dealing with design in steel, reinforced concrete, and wood.

Book excerpt: Building structures to house the logistical and manufacturing processes of industry is one of the largest and most widespread architectural assignments. The complex functional requirements are often fulfilled by typifies or modular solutions. The organization of industrial processes together with the wide range of designs and building methods are clearly and practically treated in this design atlas. A systematic section presents the typology, the technical and logistical elements of industrial building. In the subsequent section, some 70 designs are described and analysed. Special emphasis is placed on those functions and procedures that inform the design such as production, montage, storage and distribution. Jürgen Adam is Director of the Institute for Design and Construction at the University of Stuttgart. As an architect and teacher he has followed closely developments in international industrial building, as have the contributing authors, among others Gunther Henn, Klaus Daniels and Fritz Haller.

Book excerpt: Based on research projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Optimization of Regional Industrial Structures and Applications provides an authoritative introduction to and survey of the cutting-edge research and applications in industrial structure optimization. Employing grey systems theory as its method of analysis, it integrates grey systems theory with industrial structure optimization theory to provide dynamic and efficient methods of measurement, analysis, and decision making. The authors cover several models of grey regional industrial structure, including grey correlation priority analysis, industrial structure order degree measurement model, regional leading industries grey assessment model and turnpike model. The first part of the book clarifies basic theory. This section covers the production and development of industrial structure theory, evolution laws of industrial structure, rationalization and upgrading of industrial structures, factors of industrial structure upgrading, input–output analysis, and mathematical modeling of regional industrial structures. The second section introduces four case studies that illustrate real-world research and applications. It considers the approaches and measures taken in China’s industrial structure upgrade during the "eleventh five-year plan". The case studies examine measures of and strategies for Jiangsu province’s industrial structural adjustment. This section also presents the optimization and promotion study of the "eleventh five" industrial structure of another city in China. The models detailed in this book not only develop application fields of grey systems theory, but also enrich the theories of industrial structure optimization. All of the methods presented in the text are reviewed in the case studies to supply readers with a vivid and practical understanding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As carbon dioxide is the most important source of greenhouse gases today, its emission quantity has become a primary focus of governments, scholars, and the general public. From the perspective of the structure of Chinese industry, this book aims to answer two questions. First, what is the driving force of China’s CO2 emissions and how does this relate to the structure of industry? Second, what is the potential for abatement and the cost of CO2 across sectors and regions, and the impact for industry? The author calculates the CO2 inventory data at province and sectoral level based on the approach of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and then quantifies the CO2 abatement potential and marginal abatement cost using this production framework. Econometric models are used to examine the likely impact on industry of abatement potential and cost. The book hence provides a rich source of information for general readers to better understand the characteristics, patterns and drivers of China’s CO2 emissions. It also provides solid evidence for policy-makers to help mitigate CO2 emissions through industrial restructuring strategy.

Beam to column connections, typically adopted in SMRF are discussed with AISC specifications in this edition. Two appendices elaborate—(i) geometrical properties of rolled steel sections often required as per the revised clause of IS 800:2007 which are not present in the existing steel tables such as classification of cross sections in bending compression and axial compression, and (ii) suggested corrections in IS 800:2007. NEW TO THIS EDITION • An additional chapter on Connections has been incorporated, which explains different types of bolted and welded connections, concentrically as well as eccentrically loaded. KEY FEATURES • Subject matter is covered in 15 chapters and explained in a clear, contextual language. • Text consists of numerous solved examples with solutions and well-labelled figures and tables. • Concepts have been discussed with step-by-step design calculations and detailing. • Exercises given at the end of each chapter.

Book excerpt: Structural irregularities are one of the most frequent causes of severe damages in buildings, as evidenced by the numerous earthquakes in recent years. This issue is of particular importance, since real structures are almost all irregular. Furthermore, structural irregularities depend on several factors often very difficult to predict. This book is an essential tool for understanding the problem of structural irregularities and provides the most up-to-date review on this topic, covering the aspects of ground rotations, analysis, design, control and monitoring of irregular structures. It includes 24 contributions from authors of 13 countries, giving a complete and international view of the problem.
