Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of appropriate agroforesty intervention in Uganda has the potential to improve farmer's livelihoods in line with the national Plan for Modernisation of Agriculture; and district forest services within the decentralised government framework, enable service providers to promote appropriate agroforestry interventions depending on local conditions. It was against this background that this manual was developed. A training needs assessment revealed that extension staff were few and did not have sufficient understanding of the potential gains and pitfalls to adequately advise farmers on a case by case basis. Jacob Godfrey Agea is a Lecturer in the Department of Community Forestry and Extension, Makerere University. Sara Namirembe was previously a Lecturer in the Department of Community Forestry and Extension, Makerere University, and currently woks in civil society organisational work. Mohamed Bukenya is a Lecturer in the Department of Forestry Management, Makerere University, and the coordinator for agriculture and environment in FINIDP, a civil society organisation. Ahamada Zziwa is a Lecturer in the Department of Forestry Products Engineering, Makerere University, and the executive director of FINIDP. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest degradation as a result of logging, shifting cultivation, agriculture and urban development is a major issue throughout the tropics. It leads to loss in soil fertility, water resources and biodiversity, as well as contributes to climate change. Efforts are therefore required to try to minimize further degradation and restore tropical forests in a sustainable way. This is the first research-based book to examine this problem in East Africa. The specific focus is on the forests of Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda, but the lessons learned are shown to be applicable to neighbouring countries and others in the tropics. A wide range of forest types are covered, from dry Miombo forest and afromontane forests, to forest-savannah mosaics and wet forest types. Current management practices are assessed and examples of good practice presented. The role of local people is also emphasized. The authors describe improved management and restoration through silviculture, plantation forestry and agroforestry, leading to improvements in timber production, biodiversity conservation and the livelihoods of local people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixteen chapters in this book form a Festschrift in honour of Henry Chakava, the distinguished Kenyan publisher. With a Forward by Tanzanian publisher Walter Bgoya , his long-time collaborator in furthering the causes of independent African publishing, the topics cover the full range of issues in which he has been central over more than forty years. His notable achievements include the first local buy-out of a British multinational publishing house, being one of the founders of African Books Collective and the African Publishers' Network, and participation in international counsels such as the Bellagio Publishing Network. Amongst the contributors are prominent Kenyan authors Ngugi wa Thiong'o, Simon Gikandi and Micere Githae Mugo; Kenyan colleagues from the book trade world; close collaborators in Uganda and Nigeria, and some international colleagues. The greatest range of the contributors are from within Africa. There are subject specific chapters on such issues as training, copyright, publishing in the digital age, and an overview of publishing at Codesria including the vexed issue of marginalisation of African language publishing.

Book excerpt: This guide is designed to be used primarily by local community leaders to train the communities they lead. These leaders include district and lower Local Government officials, local council members, civil society staff working at community level, and executive committee members of community institutions, among others. The guide responds to a need for the active participation of local communities in securing and guarding their forest tenure rights through pro-active and innovative actions of empowered and well-informed local community members. The need was identified in the Global Comparative Study on Securing Tenure Rights for Forest Dependent Communities carried out by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) over a period of 4 years (2015–2018). An empowered and well-informed local community would be confident about the rights they have under the law, and be prepared to defend them. And building this confidence with respect to their forest tenure rights involves equipping them with relevant knowledge. This guide is designed to provide the training needed to build this confidence.
