Book excerpt: This project elucidated and examined the unique science behind the spectral and temporal contrast of near field scanning optical microscopy, illuminated the technology this enabled, and considered the limits of simultaneous position, time and spectral resolution. Specifically, (1) High-resolution, quantitative measurements of excess carrier lifetime in silicon were acquired in a novel, all-optical technique. The contrast in the images was modeled and is of interest since the resolution is significantly shorter than the carrier diffusion length. (2) a Ti-sapphire laser has been constructed and modified to decrease pump power requirements so that measurements can be made before the carriers diffuse from under the probe. Novel electron-hole droplet effects are expected. (3) Spectroscopic nano-Raman images were acquired for the first time. The Raman data illustrated interesting manifestations of a near-field in comparisons with far-field spectroscopy. (4) The first and most thorough studies of the optical and thermal properties of near-field scanning optical microscope probes gave insights which led to the development of a new generation of high throughput probes. Other results reflect instrumentation advances: (5) A new constant linear motion system useful for NSOM or other probe microscope coarse approach. (6) A new, low cost force feedback system. (7) A nanometer-resolution, kHz bandwidth, millimeter range position sensor.

This book was released on 2006-10-24 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making a clear distinction is made between nano- and micro-mechanical testing for physical reasons, this monograph describes the basics and applications of the supermicroscopies AFM and SNOM, and of the nanomechanical testing on rough and technical natural surfaces in the submicron range down to a lateral resolution of a few nm. New or improved instrumentation, new physical laws and unforeseen new applications in all branches of natural sciences (around physics, chemistry, mineralogy, materials science, biology and medicine) and nanotechnology are covered as well as the sources for pitfalls and errors. It outlines the handling of natural and technical samples in relation to those of flat standard samples and emphasizes new special features. Pitfalls and sources of errors are clearly demonstrated as well as their efficient remedy when going from molecularly flat to rough surfaces. The academic or industrial scientist learns how to apply the principles for tackling their scientific or manufacturing tasks that include roughness far away from standard samples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) is a technique of imaging used for mapping optical near-field signals by detecting evanescent waves, enabling a resolution beyond the diffraction limit, i.e., a lateral and vertical resolution much smaller than the operation wavelength. SNOM has the ability to measure both optical and topographic data in a single scan. In this thesis, we propose the development and optimization of a low-cost SNOM capable of measuring nanoscale topographies and near-field optical signals, such as surface plasmon polaritons. The SNOM uses a shear-force feedback control to set the distance between the probe and the sample (∼ 20 nm) along the entire scan. The results obtained include a stable control system with fast response. The system can provide precise quantitative topographic and optical measurements. Also, an optical method for distance and displacement measurements of the probe-sample separation was developed. This book was released on 1995 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This dissertation describes the force regulated near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) and two important adaptations: one for imaging polarization contrast with a linear response, and the other for interference imaging. An introduction to near- field optics is first presented, followed by a description of the background to this work that includes the relevant references to the literature and previous results. A simple theoretical description of the NSOM in terms of scalar fields is then presented, followed by an exposition of an early but relevant rigorous vectorial interpretation of the experiment. The basic force regulated NSOM is presented: its parts, operation, and construction is described and discussed, and its imaging capabilities are shown and discussed with results from different samples. In particular, the ability of the system to simultaneously image topographical and optical characteristics of the samples is described, and the importance of separating the optical and topographical information for the correct operation of the microscope is stressed. An adaptation to the basic NSOM that permits imaging sample-dependent polarization variations with sub-wavelength resolution and with a linear sensitivity is then discussed and analyzed. Results are shown for several samples that include metal on quartz, magneto-optic media, and polymers. Lastly, an interferometric arrangement of the NSOM is presented that allows imaging of phase variations, as well as polarization variations, with a significant signal enhancement achieved with the use of a pseudo-heterodyning technique."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: This project supported a new universal scanning microscope system combining near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM), conventional atomic force (AFM) microscopy, and confocal optical microscopy. To build a universal system capable of high-resolution topographical imaging concurrently with spectroscopic abilities, the authors have acquired several independent units and combined them into a custom-designed NSOM/AFM/Raman instrument. They have acquired an atomic force microscope (Multimode, Digital Instruments), a near-field scanning microscope (Aurora III, Digital Instruments, partially supported by NASA), and a SpectraPro Raman spectrograph from Roper. In addition to these major instruments, they acquired a number of supporting parts/instruments toward their goal of completion of the system and sample preparation, selection, and characterization for Raman studies (e.g., CCD camera, avalanche detectors, two lasers, optical parts, air table, fluorescence microscope, mini x-ray unit, etc). A post-doctoral Research Associate was in charge of putting all these parts together. The authors did not go with a single unit from WiTec because actual demonstrations did not show expected sensitivity. This report presents a description of the instrument and preliminary results obtained with it. The instrument was used to collect Raman spectra from patterned arrays of bent single wall carbon nanotubes and bundles (3 nm in diameter) and from freely suspended nanomembranes with encapsulated gold nanoparticles.

Download or read book A Near-field Scanning Optical Microscope written by John Philip Dunn and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis discusses the design and construction of a Near-field Scanning Optical Microscope (NSOM). Basic principles of operation, the characteristics of the hardware components, and the control software are discussed. A unique method of controlling the position of the probe is developed, and scans of a diffraction grating are presented. We show the influence that the surface topology and reflectivity and the interference of direct and reflected light have on the images. A second design of the instrument, for use in a vacuum chamber and with a flexure stage for lateral motion, is accomplished.
