Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Design in Textile Fabrics The rapid disappearance of the old apprentice system, the growth of large establishments, and the consequent subdivision of labour, accompanied by the ever-increasing demand for fabrics of a more artistic character to be applied to useful purposes, make it imperative upon the would-be designer or manufacturer to understand more fully than he has done in the_ past the principles upon which fabrics should be constructed, so as to fulfil all the necessary conditions. He must work on sound principles and leave nothing to chance. The reader must not expect to go through this work in a hurried manner, or to thoroughly grasp all the details of the subject without further effort. Within the compass of this volume it is, of course, impossible to enter into all the particulars which would make the student at once perfectly conversant with the whole; but an effort has been made to-lay down the leading principles clearly and completely, and to guide the student generally, rather than to enter too closely into minor details, which can onlv be sufficiently mastered by actual practice in the mill or workshop. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104ile Design and Colour: Elementary Weaves and Figured Fabrics An exhaustive treatise on the designing and colouring of textile fabrics has been found by the writer to be much beyond the scope of a single volume, and this book deals chiefly with cloths that are composed of one series of warp and one series of weft threads. The subject is continued in a second volume - entitled Advanced d104ile Design - which treats on compound and special classes of cloths. In the following pages the construction and combination of simple and special weaves, the structure of standard classes of cloths, the theories of colour, and the application of colours to textile fabrics are described and illustrated; while the designing of ordinary figured fabrics, to which eight chapters are devoted, forms a very important section of the work. d104ile calculations, and the principles and limitations of weaving machinery, so far as they concern woven design, are fully dealt with. The illustrations form a distinct feature in both number and quality, and there are 413 figures which include over 1800 different diagrams, designs, and representations of woven fabrics. The chapters on the designing of figured fabrics have previously appeared in the form of serial articles in the d104ile Recorder, while the section on colour and weave effects has similarly been published in the d104ile Manufacturer. The writer is indebted to the editors and proprietors of these journals for encouragement in the preparation of the articles. In re-issuing this matter in book form many of the original illustrations have been used, bat opportunity has been taken to carefully revise the text, and to introduce new examples. And to the matter which has been previously published eleven chapters have been added, in order to make the book a complete work on the designing and colouring of the simpler classes of cloths. To the publishers and printers the writer wishes to express his indebtedness for the regard they have had to his wishes in the preparation of the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text Book Dealing With Ornamental Design for Woven Fabrics HE primary reason why the authors undertook the writing of this work on Ornamental Design for Woven Fabrics is, that they felt the want, when teaching, of some book where the subject was systematised and specially dealt with. In planning it out we have been guided by our experience of the difficulties met with by students in local weaving schools, believing that the same may also be felt by others. It is not intended to cover the whole subject of Orna mental Design, that having been already written upon in many excellent books, and the ground has perhaps been well covered; but for the purpose we have in View, these books may be considered too general for students devoting themselves to 'one special branch of Technical Design, the information they desire being lost amongst so wide a field of material. It is hoped that our efforts may bring the necessary knowledge within a narrower focus and thereby make it more easily accessible; the consecutive order in which the matter is presented may also be helpful to students, designers, and manufacturers of textiles, in forming clearer ideas on the artistic side of Textile De signing than they would otherwise be able to obtain from the books published on the subject of Ornamental Design in its broader aspect. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grammar of d104ile Design A textile fabric may contain only one element of woven design and yet be profusely embellished without having recourse to colour. Many white and grey linen and cotton, and also white silk, damask and brocade fabrics, are good examples of that class. The construction of such fabrics, and of damasks in particular, is frequently based upon some simple elementary weave which is simply reversed to develop the figure and ground portions, thereby causing warp to preponderate on the surface in some parts, and weft in others hence the contrasting tones of light which enable the figure and ground portions to be distinguished. The most elaborately decorated fabrics will often times be found to contain not more than three or four different varieties of simple weaves effectively introduced in the scheme of decoration; whilst most fabrics employed for domestic pur poses, and many others, contain but one element of design of a simple character and specially suited for a specific purpose. An examination of such fabrics will show that warp and weft are interwoven in some simple definite order or sequence that occurs with perfect regularity throughout the entire fabric. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Textile Design: Pure and Applied On the other hand, many cloths are produced in which the weave structure or build of the fabric is of vital importance: in which the whole effect depends upon the method of interlacing the warp and the weft in the process of weaving. Such cloths are made from yarns of every well-known kind of textile fibre. Designers of these fabrics must have an intimate knowledge of cloth structure, and should thoroughly understand how to make due allowance for the various restrictions imposed upon them by the particular type of loom in which the designs are to be developed. For such men a purely art training is not an absolute necessity, unless, indeed, when they are engaged in the preparation of the more elaborately figured kinds. Where coloured yarns are extensively used, as in the woollen, worsted, and silk industries, 3. Sound knowledge of the principles of colouring and their application to the blending of the fibres, and to the arrangement of the coloured yarns, is essential; while, for certain kinds of cloth, e.g., tapestries, brocades, etc., the designer is expected to be conversant with all branches - art, colour, weave structure, and processes of production. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on the Designing and Construction of Woven Fabrics The designing paper mostly in use is laid off in squares con taining 8 x 8, or 64 blocks. The sizes of the blocks and squares vary according to the different sizes preferred by each designer and according to the kind of fabrics to be designed. The point paper, designated by 8 x 8, is usually made with squares of 1 in size, and larger. If a design is to be made which requires a large number Of threads the designing paper with the smaller squares is to be preferred; if, on the other hand, designs are to be made which require but a small number of threads, the paper with the larger squares is preferable. The number of blocks to the square warpwise is always indicated first. Other designing papers used are 8 x 6, 8 x 7, 8 x 9, 8 x 10, 8 x x 16, 4 x 12, 6 x 12, 10 x 10, 12 x x 12, etc., etc. The heavy lines, or squares, serve as a unit for measure ment, as well as in helping to count Off the required number of blocks. In this way they help to find the size of auv design on point paper, at a glance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104iles and Costume Design Indeed, ermine is a striking example of a misused accessory in a costume. It is fascinating, because it conjures up visions of royal personages, knights and ladies. The laws of the Middle Ages (edward III) required that it be worn only by nobles, and to-day in Europe ermine is worn on state robes; the rank and position of the wearer is in many cases indicated by its presence or absence and the disposition of the black spots, and when worn in crowns or coronets it is a recognition of heraldry. Therefore, at all times it should be reserved for state occasions or worn for mally with certain royally textured and dignified clothes and fabrics, just as velvets and satins are reserved for formal gowns and not for kitchen or garden work, just as large velvet hats are not worn in the morning with workaday clothes or short skirts, and just as royally plumed, large velvet hats are suited only to formal afternoon or evening gowns of velvet or satin. Much might be written upon this subject of good taste and imagination in the wearing of clothes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Design Texts: A Practical Treatise on Textile Design, Cloth Construction, Fabric Analysis and Calculations Weaving was practiced by the Egyptians, although little is known of their looms or the manner in which they prepared yarn for the loom. The discovery of a few wall paintings at Thebes, among which were representations of the Egyptian methods of weaving and spinning, gives us our first knowledge of ancient looms. One method was to weave the fabric in a horizontal posi tion, in fact, on the ground, the weaver sitting on the woven fabric. Vertical looms were also used, the weaver throwing the filling through the shed by means of a rod. On the end of this rod was a hook, to which the filling was attached. Two weavers were frequently employed, sitting at either side of the loom, pass ing the rod back and forth through the shed. The Greeks and Romans used vertical looms similar to the Egyptian. The cloth was woven upwards, the warp being sus pended from the top beam of the loom, and the lower ends tied in separate portions and weighted to keep the threads in tension. The filling was combed into position by means of a comb adapted for the purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colour in Woven Design Partially in fulfilment of this promise, and partially because I have frequently been requested by designers, manufacturers, and students who have attended my lectures on textile colouring at Leeds, Huddersfield, and other places, to prepare a text-book on the application of colours to woven fabrics, this volume has been written, which, to use the hackneyed prefatory phrase, is intended to meet a long-felt want. Though there are several useful works on Colour - to wit, those of Chevreul, Rood, Benson, Hay, Field, Maxwell, and Guichard - dealing with its scientific phases, yet they can scarcely be said to lend that kind of help to the student of applied design that is needed; hence the necessity of this handbook, which is the first treatise published professing to treat exclusively of the colouring of woven styles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Design in Textile Fabrics In this manual an attempt has been made to place before the reader, as briefly and completely as possible, the principles of design in textile fabrics in its broadest sense, and to deal with the subject in such a manner as to combine with the question of decoration that of the proper structure of the cloth. The practice of paying little or no attention to the proper structure of the fabric, and its suitability for the purposes to which it is to be applied in the arrangement of designs, is unfortunately far too common, and is the cause of a considerable waste of labour and expense in our manufacturing concerns. This may, perhaps, be to some extent due to the method of training those who are to be the designers, and also, to an even greater extent, to the fact that there has hitherto been no systematic treatment of the question. Most men engaged in the manufacture of textile fabrics have confined their attention to one branch, or to one class of goods, and have become proficient from practice only in that class. Their success has been entirely dependent upon the amount of attention they have paid to the particular class of fabrics they were engaged in manufacturing, or to the accuracy of their observations, and not to any - or, at the most, only to a slight - degree upon any systematic method or basis for their work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dressmaking: A Manual for Schools and Colleges Part I I considers Textiles, the materials which are used in dressmaking, and discusses the economic value of vari ous fibres and fabrics. The general processes of textile manufacture are given to serve as a basis for consider ation of the cost and wearing qualities of any fabric. A few suggestions are included for physical tests for fabrics - such tests as do not require a knowledge of chemistry and are possible in the schoolroom or at home. Part III treats of design and technique in pattern making and dressmaking. It presents various methods for cutting, fitting, and finishing a garment to meet the demands of art and of convention as affected by fashion.
