This dissertation deals with the formal design of three- dimensional spatial database systems and with the need for abstraction in the design. Use of abstraction in the formal design of data models allows a database system developer to consider the comprehensive needs of users at an ideal level unencumbered by implementation details. The dissertation also presents a set of robust three- dimensional geometric primitives that could form the core of a discrete data model. Although a discrete data model is more concrete than SPAL3D, it has some abstraction. The dissertation offers a precise and conceptually clean specification and foundation for implementing a Database Management System (DBMS) extension for three-dimensional data. Assuming the existence of an implementation of this type system, it demonstrates the embedding of the spatial data types as attribute data types in database schemas as well as the incorporation of the operations and predicates into queries formulated in a possible extension of SQL.

Book excerpt: The term spatial data signifies all geometric objects of different dimensions and the relations that could bind these objects together. Spatial data is, in general, divided into two parts: crisp spatial data and vague spatial data. Crisp spatial data has determinate coordinates and boundaries, whereas vague spatial data has indeteminate ones. The demand for spatial data support in database management systems is growing every day, yet not all commercial products provide spatial data support natively, and those that do merely provide it partially. Since database management systems are at the heart of most data-oriented applications, generic support for non--traditional data types (such as spatial data types) is required from such systems. The main goal of this thesis is to analyze spatial data in detail and to propose a method for storing and manipulating such data. Both crisp and vague spatial data were analyzed, and their usage and major aspects were highlighted. We also studied existing support for spartial data in commercial database management systems and pointed out the existing lack of functionality in those systems. We propose several ways of storing crisp spatial data based on some Open GIS Consortium (OGC) standards and on manipulating it by means of computational geometry. We also propose ways to represent and manipulate vague spatial data. These propositions were based on sampling techniques, which are used in the filed on GIS. In order to prove our concepts, we designed and implemented a spatial extension package (SPEX) and integrated it in a commercial relational database management system. We also devised the necessary visual components and a software prototype to test our package. We conclude our thesis by enforcing the idea of the "common object store," which is a DBMS capable of storing and manipulating all sorts of data (relational data, objects, multimedia, spatial, etc.).

Given the immature technological means, objects on the Earth’s surface were often represented in academic and technical disciplines by two-dimensional cross-sections oriented along combinations of three mutually perpendicular directions. As soon as computer science evolved, scientists have steadily been improving the three-dimensional representation of the Earth and developed techniques to analyze the many natural processes and phenomena taking part on its surface. Both computer aided design (CAD) and geographical information systems (GIS) have been developed in parallel during the last three decades. While the former concentrates more on the detailed design of geometric models of object shapes, the latter emphasizes the topological relationships between geographical objects and analysis of spatial patterns. Nonetheless, this distinction has become increasingly blurred and both approaches have been integrated into commercial software packages. In recent years, an active line of inquiry has emerged along the junctures of CAD and GIS, viz. 3D geoinformation science. Studies along this line have recently made significant inroads in terms of 3D modeling and data acquisition.
