Book excerpt: To provide shelter as a basic need for growing world population (expected to reach 8.6 billion in 2030 and 9.8 billion in 2050), it is necessary to efficiently use natural resources to develop effective building products. This research develops a value-added product from small diameter timber as a promising and innovative building material with greater structural and energy performance than comparable building construction materials. Due to high stiffness/strength-to-weight ratio, sandwich structures are widely used in many areas. Those with hollow cores have attracted interest because the cavities can be used to improve the thermal and acoustic performance. In this study, a novel sandwich structure with 3-D core(s) was developed for constructing building envelopes. Using FE model and a mechanics-based approach, a parametric study was conducted to design a biaxial corrugated geometry to serve as a core for the sandwich structure. After verifying the design, a large mold was fabricated to produce biaxial corrugated panels which were then used to fabricate 1- and 2-layered corrugated core sandwich panels. These panels were evaluated for their bending, axial compression, and thermal conductivity properties. Analytical models using high-order sandwich panel theory for beam configuration and classical plate theory along with third order shear deformation plate theory for full size sandwich panels were developed to capture their bending behavior within the elastic region. Hashin damage model implemented in Abaqus finite element software was used to capture load-carrying capacity of the sandwich panels. Since wood and wood-based products are viscoelastic, creep tests were conducted to understand the time-dependent behavior of the sandwich structure.Experimental results showed significantly higher performance for 2-layered corrugated core sandwich panels than SIPs and stud-walls under bending and axial compression loads. Normalized R-value of the panels filled with closed-cell foam was twice that of typical wood composite panels. Predictions of the bending stiffness and the load carrying capacity of 1-layered corrugated core sandwich panels using analytical and damage models agreed very closely with the experimental results (a difference of less than 1%). Wood strand sandwich panels developed in this study provide an opportunity to prefabricate panels for construction of residential building envelopes.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Traditionally wood based composites like oriented strand boards (OSB) and particle boards have been mainstays of structural and furniture engineering industries for varied applications. These products use wood contributing to deforestation. Deforestation has contributed to global warming and extinction of thousands of species due to destruction of natural habitat. In this research we envision to use agriculturally grown fibers to engineer composite sandwich panels which will reflect superior qualitative advantages in mechanical properties and application process and would also prove to be cheap and can easily be replenished. The sandwich construction consists of a core which is contained by a set of face sheets. The core is made from prefabricated woven sheets of bamboo fabric. The core is supposed to provide the panel with good compressive and bending properties. This core is sandwiched with [0/90/45/-45/0/90/45/-45] s burlap (jute) fabric in layers with specified orientation to increase the tensile properties of the composites. In this research dissertation, we set out with investigating various methods to bond burlap sheets with bamboo. After fabricating smaller batches and rudimentary non standard tests, we finalized on the fabrication process. After careful pre-processing of the base products, the sandwich panels were then fabricated using Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Method (VARTM) and the process was documented. The obtained panel was then machined to standard ASTM test specimen sizes and subjected to ASTM tests at the mechanical engineering material test laboratories at CSULB. The properties obtained were further investigated using FEM model for the sandwich composite panels. A comparative study was made between the fabricated burlap-bamboo sandwich boards with other commercially available particle, medium density fiber and oriented strand boards noting a 90% increase in tensile strength, 25% in modulus of elasticity and 36% increase in bending strength when compared to other legacy products.

Book excerpt: This paper presented construction and strain distributions for light-weight wood-fiber-based structural panels with tri-grid core made from phenolic impregnated laminated paper composites under bending. A new fastening configuration of slots in the faces and tabs on the core was applied to the face/core interfaces of the sandwich panel in addition to epoxy resin. Both normal strain gages and shear strain gages were attached on these panels to analyze inside strain distributions by third point load bending test. The purpose of the bending test was to investigate the various strain distributions of panels with different face/core configurations that identified the critical failure modes for future design. In this research, four panels with different configurations were constructed to analyze the influence of strain distributions for bending behavior. Either maximum localized normal strain or shear strain were used to judge failures and associated failure modes through observation. Test results of strain distribution showed normal strain was primarily carried by both top and bottom faces. As bending load increased, compression buckling occurred on the top surface of some panels with thinner faces. Face thickness and stiffness significantly affected the strength of the panel as evident by nonlinear strain behavior. Meanwhile, the shear strain was primarily taken by the ribs in the structural core, and shear failure always occurred in the longitudinal linear ribs of core with thicker faces. The shear strain in the cross ribs was approximately half that of the longitudinal linear ribs in the same section of shear zone, which was consistent with the geometric formula. The problem of panel imperfections resulting in either face compression buckling or rib shear buckling could be overcome by further design optimization, and the analytical modeling for bending design and evaluation was presented.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Excessive use of petroleum based products and public concern over environment pollution motivates researchers and industries to look for more environment friendly products for our daily life. This research is based on the idea to make bio-based composite material by using potential natural fiber and to investigate the mechanical properties of the material. In this regard, composite sandwich structured panel will be fabricated by using hemp fiber as reinforcement, balsa wood as core material and bio-based epoxy resin as matrix material. Two different types of sample will be produced. One by using hand lay-up process and another one by using pre-cured natural fiber reinforced composite laminate as facing material. Tensile strength of the pre-cured laminate, sandwich facing properties, sandwich flexural stiffness and shear properties will be evaluated by following experimental test procedure of the ASTM test standards for composite sandwich constructions. Their mechanical properties will be compared. If the mechanical properties are significant then the composite sandwich structured panel may have application for furniture, interior, partitions and other construction works. This will eventually help to introduce eco-friendly materials for structural construction work.

Carlsson and George A. Kardomateas focuses on some important deformation and failure modes of sandwich panels such as global buckling, wrinkling and local instabilities, and face/core debonding. The book also provides the mechanics background necessary for understanding deformation and failure mechanisms in sandwich panels and the response of sandwich structural parts to a variety of loadings. Specifically, first-order and high-order sandwich panel theories, and three-dimensional elasticity solutions for the structural behavior outlined in some detail. Elasticity analysis can serve as a benchmark for judging the accuracy of simplified sandwich plate, shell and beam theories. Furthermore, the book reviews test methods developed for the characterization of the constituent face and core materials, and sandwich beams and plates. The characterization of face/core debonding is a major topic of this text, and analysis methods based on fracture mechanics are described and applied to several contemporary test specimens. Test methods and results documented in the literature are included and discussed. The book will benefit structural and materials engineers and researchers with the desire to learn more about structural behavior, failure mechanisms, fracture mechanics and damage tolerance of sandwich structures.
