Book excerpt: Materials science and engineering is devoted to the understanding of the physics and chemistry of materials at the mesoscale and to applying that knowledge into real-life applications. In this work, different oxide materials and different oxidation methods are studied from a materials science point of view and for specific applications. First, the deposition of complex metal oxides is explored for solar energy concentration. This requires a number of multi-cation oxide structures such as thin-film dielectric barriers, low loss waveguides or the use of continuously graded composition oxides for antireflection coatings and light concentration. Then, oxidation via Joule heating is used for the self-alignment of a selector on top of a memristor structure on a nanovia. Simulations are used to explore the necessary voltage for the insulator-to-metal transition temperature of NbO2 using finite element analysis, followed by the fabrication and the characterization of such a device. Finally, long-term copper oxidation at room temperature and pressure is studied using optical techniques. Alternative characterization techniques are used to confirm the growth rate and phase change, and an application of copper oxide as a volatile conductive bridge is shown. All these examples show how the combination of novel simulation, fabrication and characterization techniques can be used to understand physical mechanisms and enable disruptive technologies in fields such as solar cells, light emitting diodes, photodetectors or memory devices.

Humidity control is important in various fields, from production management to creating a comfortable living environment. The range of materials that can be used in the development of humidity sensors is very broad, and the third volume of the Handbook of Humidity Measurement offers an analysis on various humidity-sensitive materials and sensor technologies used in the fabrication of humidity sensors and methods acceptable for their testing. Additional features include: numerous strategies for the fabrication and characterization of humidity-sensitive materials and sensing structures used in sensor applications, methods and properties to develop smaller, cheaper, more robust, and accurate devices with better sensitivity and stability, a guide to sensor selection and an overview of the humidity sensor market, and new technology solutions for integration, miniaturization, and specificity of the humidity sensor calibration. Handbook of Humidity Measurement, Volume 3: Sensing Materials and Technologies provides valuable information for practicing engineers, measurement experts, laboratory technicians, project managers in industries and national laboratories, and university students and professors interested in solutions to humidity measurement tasks. Despite the fact that this book is devoted to the humidity sensors, it can be used as a basis for understanding fundamentals of any gas sensor operation and development.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aluminum is an ideal metal for solution-processed oxide dielectrics because it can form polymerized hydroxo networks in aqueous solution and dense amorphous oxide dielectrics by vacuum methods. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is one of the traditional vacuum methods for thin film deposition, however, ALD is not the most economically feasible method for thin film fabrication due to high operational cost and limitations in large surface-area applications. Solution deposition is a more economical deposition method which is more cost-saving and ideal for large surface area thin film fabrication. The behavior of the solution-solid structural conversion remains an enigma; thus, this research seeks to understand the structural transformation of thin films from solution to solid in order to fabricate films with optimal properties.Aluminum oxide (AlxOy) thin films prepared from aqueous solution-deposited cluster precursors have been proposed for use in devices such as high-k dielectrics in solar cell materials. The films are fabricated with different aluminum-derived precursors, spin-coated on a substrate and annealed at a range of temperatures. The low temperature range of these films are amorphous, therefore lack long range order. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) can be used to determine the amorphous structure of these materials. Herein, a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD), and NMR techniques are used to elucidate the transformation of these thin films as they are annealed to high temperatures.
