Book excerpt: The objective of the program was to evaluate, develop and validate more accurate computer-based analytical models for combustor flows to be used in combustor design. The joint velocity-scalar probability density function (pdf) method, which overcomes several key deficiencies of conventional turbulent combustion models and offers greater accuracy for combustor design calculations, is the focus of the program. Significant progress has been made under this program towards the development of the pdf method as a combustor design tool. Several new models and algorithms used in the pdf method have been developed. The method and the models have been validated in detail for a variety of flows, including swirling, recirculating and reacting flows, involving the essential features of gas turbine combustor flows. The validation was performed using available benchmark quality data, as well as data from specifically designed experiments which were performed at Wright Laboratory. A baseline pdf based combustor design system has been developed.

Book excerpt: Long-term goals of the Air Force are to develop high-performance gas turbine combustors, and the design systems that can produce them. One aspect of an advanced combustor design system is the ability to calculate flame stability under fuel-lean conditions. Towards satisfying this latter desire the program had three principal objectives: (1) design, conduct and analyze experiments that establish a fundamental understanding of lean blowout, (2) provide a data base for evaluating and refining computer models of gas turbine combustion, and, (3) devise a calculation procedure for lean blowout. Two laboratory and one rig-standard combustors were successfully designed, fabricated and operated. A novel procedure using excess nitrogen as a diluent for simulating sub-atmospheric pressures was calibrated and verified. The sequence of events leading to lean blowout was identified, and observed to be common in all the combustors. Advanced diagnostic techniques were applied to enhance understanding of blowout. Some advanced mathematical modeling was shown to be inadequate for calculating blowout. A hybrid calculation procedure was devised that successfully modeled the influences on blowout of many important operating conditions and design variables. In this manner the program objectives were met.

Book excerpt: Regulations in the aerospace and power generation industries continue to place increasingly stringent limitations on the amount of pollutants a gas turbine combustion system can emit. This is often achieved by lean fuel-air mixture systems that operate at much lower flame temperatures. Lower flame temperatures push these systems to the limit of instabilities that destroy hardware and decrease the lifetime of these systems. These instabilities are the result of a feedback cycle between acoustic pressure oscillations, perturbations in the flow and mixture of reactants, and consequent oscillations in heat release. Although each component of this feedback loop has been studied, acoustic pressure oscillations are highly dependent on the geometry of each combustor configuration. This inherent challenge is further driven by the fact that these studies must often be conducted experimentally after all components of the system have been assembled. Developing techniques capable of evaluating acoustic characteristics of a system early in the design of the system will help lower cost of development while improving detection and prevention of instabilities. This study assesses inherent acoustic characteristics of a model gas turbine combustion system experimentally and through simulation. Resonant frequencies of the physical system are presented and impedances of boundary conditions at the nozzle exit are calculated. These boundary conditions serve as necessary inputs to numerical modeling methods that replicate experimental studies conducted prior. Comparison between experimental results and modeling results show that modeling techniques can be effective in analyzing a system at preliminary stages of the design process.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thougtit that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 31 (thesis year 1986) a total of 11 ,480 theses titles trom 24 Canadian and 182 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base tor these titles reported will greatly enhance the value ot this important annual reterence work. While Volume 31 reports theses submitted in 1986, on occasion, certain univer sities do re port theses submitted in previousyears but not reported at the time.

This revision includes new case histories, the latest techniques, and new designs to comply with recently passed legislation. By keeping the book up to date with new, emerging topics, Boyce ensures that this book will remain the standard and most widely used book in this field. The new Third Edition of the Gas Turbine Engineering Hand Book updates the book to cover the new generation of Advanced gas Turbines. It examines the benefit and some of the major problems that have been encountered by these new turbines. The book keeps abreast of the environmental changes and the industries answer to these new regulations. A new chapter on case histories has been added to enable the engineer in the field to keep abreast of problems that are being encountered and the solutions that have resulted in solving them. Comprehensive treatment of Gas Turbines from Design to Operation and Maintenance. In depth treatment of Compressors with emphasis on surge, rotating stall, and choke; Combustors with emphasis on Dry Low NOx Combustors; and Turbines with emphasis on Metallurgy and new cooling schemes. An excellent introductory book for the student and field engineers A special maintenance section dealing with the advanced gas turbines, and special diagnostic charts have been provided that will enable the reader to troubleshoot problems he encounters in the field The third edition consists of many Case Histories of Gas Turbine problems. This should enable the field engineer to avoid some of these same generic problems

Book excerpt: November, 2008 Anna Schwarz, Johannes Janicka In the last thirty years noise emission has developed into a topic of increasing importance to society and economy. In ?elds such as air, road and rail traf?c, the control of noise emissions and development of associated noise-reduction techno- gies is a central requirement for social acceptance and economical competitiveness. The noise emission of combustion systems is a major part of the task of noise - duction. The following aspects motivate research: • Modern combustion chambers in technical combustion systems with low pol- tion exhausts are 5 - 8 dB louder compared to their predecessors. In the ope- tional state the noise pressure levels achieved can even be 10-15 dB louder. • High capacity torches in the chemical industry are usually placed at ground level because of the reasons of noise emissions instead of being placed at a height suitable for safety and security. • For airplanes the combustion emissions become a more and more important topic. The combustion instability and noise issues are one major obstacle for the introduction of green technologies as lean fuel combustion and premixed burners in aero-engines. The direct and indirect contribution of combustion noise to the overall core noise is still under discussion. However, it is clear that the core noise besides the fan tone will become an important noise source in future aero-engine designs. To further reduce the jet noise, geared ultra high bypass ratio fans are driven by only a few highly loaded turbine stages.
