Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heating water is typically the second largest use of energy in residential and commercial buildings (after space heating and cooling). Despite its resource intensity, the hot water delivery system is seldom an area of significant focus when constructing a building. As a result, many buildings today are built with poor performing, inefficient hot water delivery systems that take minutes to deliver hot water to the point of use and waste large amounts of energy and water in the process. How quickly and efficiently a hot water system can deliver to the point of use require focus on three areas:• Generation: Heaters shall be sized for meeting both the daily requirements and for the hourly peak loads of the occupants of the building. Hot water can temporarily run out if the design is inadequate and will have higher energy costs if the system is oversized. • Distribution: Once heated, the hot water must be delivered to the intended point of use. The factors influencing the distribution efficiency include length of piping between the water heater and a given fixture, continuous recirculation controls, and materials and insulation effectiveness. • Use: Hot water is used by a variety of fixtures and appliances (faucets, showerheads, clothes washers, and dishwashers). Using efficient products such labeled faucets and showerheads that function at lower flow rates will increase the efficiency of the system. This quick book provides a brief overview of and potential design considerations for hot water plumbing systems for residential and commercial buildings.Learning ObjectiveBy completing this module, the reader will be able to:• Estimate the hot water demands based on theory of probability, fixture types and number of occupants;• Understand the hot water generation techniques, type of fuels and heaters;• Explain three primary factors influencing the heater selection: 1) capacity and frequency of use, 2) heater performance and 3) operating costs;• Determine the appropriate sizing of storage water heaters and compare the use of terms - first heat recovery, storage capacity and recovery rate;• Explain the components of centralized hot water system, direct and indirect heating systems;• Explain the basics of hot water distribution in domestic and commercial installations and its relation to water and energy efficiency;• Understand the application of various types of water supply configurations - an upfeed system, a downfeed system, or some combination thereof;• Understand the difference between the direct and reverse return piping configurations;• Compare and contrast the different control options for designing a continuous recirculation hot distribution system and the impact of such choices on water and energy sustainability;• Size the hot water circulator and the piping diameters on velocity and pressure drop criteria;• Understand the different techniques and options for hot water mixing control;• Learn the facts, formulas and good engineering practices pertaining to energy efficiency and safety.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fully comprehensive guide to thermal systems design covering fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer and thermodynamic power cycles Bridging the gap between the fundamental concepts of fluid mechanics, heat transfer and thermodynamics, and the practical design of thermo-fluids components and systems, this textbook focuses on the design of internal fluid flow systems, coiled heat exchangers and performance analysis of power plant systems. The topics are arranged so that each builds upon the previous chapter to convey to the reader that topics are not stand-alone items during the design process, and that they all must come together to produce a successful design. Because the complete design or modification of modern equipment and systems requires knowledge of current industry practices, the authors highlight the use of manufacturer’s catalogs to select equipment, and practical examples are included throughout to give readers an exhaustive illustration of the fundamental aspects of the design process. Key Features: Demonstrates how industrial equipment and systems are designed, covering the underlying theory and practical application of thermo-fluid system design Practical rules-of-thumb are included in the text as ‘Practical Notes’ to underline their importance in current practice and provide additional information Includes an instructor’s manual hosted on the book’s companion website

This indispensable companion to Norbert Lechner's landmark volume Heating, Cooling, Lighting: Sustainable Design Methods for Architects, Third Edition completes the author's mission to cover all topics in the field of sustainable environmental control. It provides knowledge appropriate for the level of complexity needed at the schematic design stage and presents the most up-to-date information available in a concise, logical, accessible manner and arrangement. Although sustainability deals with many issues, those concerning energy and efficiency are the most critical, making an additional goal of this book one of providing architects with the skills and knowledge needed to create buildings that use electricity and water efficiently. Guidelines and rules-of-thumb are provided to help designers make their buildings use less energy, less water, and less of everything else to achieve their primary objectives. In addition, this book: Addresses ways to reduce electricity usage through more efficient lighting systems and appliances and by incorporating automatic switches and control systems that turn off systems not in use. Covers the design of well-planned effluent treatment systems that protect against potential health hazards while also becoming a valuable source of reclaimed water and fertilize.r Provides coverage of fire protection and conveyance systems, including very efficient types of elevators and escalators and designs that encourage the use of stairs or ramps. Complete with case studies that illustrate how these systems are incorporated into large-project plans, Plumbing, Electricity, Acoustics is an indispensable resource for any architect involved in a sustainable design project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plumbing water distribution systems are designed on the idea of the most probable peak demand loading, which reflects the worst-case scenario for a system. These types of systems require different considerations than large-scale water distribution networks. The difference is primarily attributed to uncertainty regarding the use of plumbing fixtures, hence uncertainty in demand loadings. This 4-hour Quick Book provides comprehensive design methodology and underlying principles of plumbing water systems. This course addresses the design criteria for estimating potable water demand for residential and transitory use facilities. This course is intended to provide basic information, which may be used for conceptual design in the absence of any more appropriate information. The course is divided into four parts as follows:• PART I - Estimating Water Demands and Plumbing Codes• PART II - Estimating Non-Residential Water Demands• PART III - Sizing Auxiliaries such as Piping, Pumps, Storage & Expansion tanks• PART IV - System Reliability and Regulatory ConsiderationsThis course is aimed at students, architects, mechanical engineers, civil engineers, facility designers, health and environment professionals, energy auditors and anyone who wants a basic understanding of plumbing systems. Once you complete your course review, you need to take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of twenty (20) questions at the end to enhance course learning. Learning ObjectiveAt the conclusion of this course, the student will: • Understand the factors influencing the potable water demand;• Learn the model plumbing codes applicable to potable water plumbing systems;• Learn the Hunter's method for approximating peak demand loadings on a building's water distribution system.• Describe the terms maximum flow, average flow, maximum probable flow, continuous demand and intermittent demand;• Understand the fixture unit concept to determine the rate of flow with a plumbing pipe;• Learn with example the application of Hunter's curve and demand tables;• Learn the American Water Works Association (AWWA) “Fixture Value Method for sizing service water mains for non-residential demands;• Learn four approaches related to plumbing water pipe sizing;• Understand the advantages and disadvantages of using copper v/s plastic pipe for potable water service;• Understand the method of sizing booster water pump/s;• Understand the regulatory requirements and system reliability considerations when analyzing or estimating water demands.
