This book was released on 2011 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emerging vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) offer a variety of applications and new potential markets related to safety, convenience and entertainment, however, they suffer from a number of challenges not shared so deeply by other types of existing networks, particularly, in terms of mobility of nodes, and end-to-end quality of service (QoS) provision. Although several existing works in the literature have attempted to provide efficient protocols at different layers targeted mostly for safety applications, there remain many barriers to be overcome in order to constrain the widespread use of such networks for non-safety applications, specifically, for video streaming: 1) impact of high speed mobility of nodes on end-to-end QoS provision; 2) cross-layer protocol design while keeping low computational complexity; 3) considering customer-oriented QoS metrics in the design of protocols; and 4) maintaining seamless single-hop and multi-hop connection between the destination vehicle and the road side unit (RSU) while network is moving. This thesis addresses each of the above limitations in design of cross-layer protocols for video streaming application. 1) An adaptive MAC retransmission limit selection scheme is proposed to improve the performance of IEEE 802.11p standard MAC protocol for video streaming applications over VANETs. A multi-objective optimization framework, which jointly minimizes the probability of playback freezes and start-up delay of the streamed video at the destination vehicle by tuning the MAC retransmission limit with respect to channel statistics as well as packet transmission rate, is applied at road side unit (RSU). Two-hop transmission is applied in zones in which the destination vehicle is not within the transmission range of any RSU. In the multi-hop scenario, we discuss the computation of access probability used in the MAC adaptation scheme and propose a cross-layer path selection scheme; 2) We take advantage of similarity between multi-hop urban VANETs in dense traffic conditions and mesh connected networks. First, we investigate an application-centric routing scheme for video streaming over mesh connected overlays. Next, we introduce the challenges of urban VANETs compared to mesh networks and extend the proposed scheme in mesh network into a protocol for urban VANETs. A classfication-based method is proposed to select an optimal path for video streaming over multi-hop mesh networks. The novelty is to translate the path selection over multi-hop networks to a standard classification problem. The classification is based on minimizing average video packet distortion at the receiving nodes. The classifiers are trained offline using a vast collection of video sequences and wireless channel conditions in order to yield optimal performance during real time path selection. Our method substantially reduces the complexity of conventional exhaustive optimization methods and results in high quality (low distortion). Next, we propose an application-centric routing scheme for real-time video transmission over urban multi-hop vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET) scenarios. Queuing based mobility model, spatial traffic distribution and prob- ability of connectivity for sparse and dense VANET scenarios are taken into consideration in designing the routing protocol. Numerical results demonstrate the gain achieved by the proposed routing scheme versus geographic greedy forwarding in terms of video frame distortion and streaming start-up delay in several urban communication scenarios for various vehicle entrance rate and traffic densities; and 3) finally, the proposed quality-driven routing scheme for delivering video streams is combined with a novel IP management scheme. The routing scheme aims to optimize the visual quality of the transmitted video frames by minimizing the distortion, the start-up delay, and the frequency of the streaming freezes. As the destination vehicle is in motion, it is unrealistic to assume that the vehicle will remain connected to the same access router (AR) for the whole trip. Mobile IP management schemes can beneffit from the proposed multi-hop routing protocol in order to adapt proxy mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) for multi-hop VANET for video streaming applications. The proposed cross-layer protocols can significantly improve the video streaming quality in terms of the number of streaming freezes and start-up delay over VANETs while achieving low computational complexity by using pattern classification methods for optimization.

Book excerpt: Vehicular networks (VANETs) have distinctive structures that distinguish them in comparison to general mobile ad hoc networks. In this thesis we identify the relevant special structures that do exist, and show how they can be exploited to design a MAC layer that provides better performance than a MAC layer designed without taking such structures into account. Particular important examples of the structures in VANETs are: (i) Periodic broadcast is the common transmission pattern due to the requirements of vehicular safety applications; (ii) GPS is available on nodes; (iii) Node mobility is constrained along one-dimensional roadways, and traffic can only move in one of the two directions of each roadway; and (iv) Traffic moving on one lane in one direction of a road has group mobility. These structures offer unique exploitable opportunities for building specific protocols tailored to VANETs which perform better than other general purpose protocols designed for structureless networks. We will show that, at the MAC layer, these structures can be thoroughly exploited to design a protocol based on dynamic TDMA that is well suited for VANETs. We present the Dynamic Channel Partition and Reservation (DCPR) Protocol, which is a specific VANET MAC protocol designed for operating a dynamic TDMA mechanism in a way robust to vehicular mobility, by dynamically partitioning the set of TDMA channels for the use of vehicles according to their different velocities. DCPR also enhances the basic dynamic TDMA mechanism with features for proper operation in a wireless environment with fading. We evaluate DCPR with simulations via ns-2 and VanetMobiSim, using the Intelligent Driver Model with Lane Changing. Our simulation results show that DCPR achieves packet loss rates which are one to two orders of magnitude lower than those obtained by IEEE 802.11p at various vehicle densities and in different vehicular traffic environments. Moreover, DCPR increases goodput by a factor as high as nine in a wireless environment with fading compared to a basic dynamic TDMA protocol. With regard to variations in vehicular traffic, DCPR maintains stable performance across all levels of traffic asymmetry in a highway scenario. Based on the systematic exploitation of group mobility, we are led to suggest an overarching design based on the Velocity Differentiated Dynamic Channel Partition (VDDCP) Mechanism. In the scenarios we have evaluated, DCPR equipped with the VDDCP mechanism performs as well as the original DCPR, and further evaluation is required to determine if there are other scenarios of vehicular traffic geometries and intensities in which the VDDCP mechanism delivers significantly better performance. To summarize, DCPR shows the possibility of building a MAC layer for VANETs that provides high packet delivery rate, supporting the development of vehicular safety applications that demand reliability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multi-hop broadcast is one of the main approaches to disseminate data in VANET. Therefore, it is important to design a reliable multi-hop broadcast protocol, which satises both reachability and bandwidth consumption requirements. In a dense network, where vehicles are very close to each other, the number of vehicles needed to rebroadcast the message should be small enough to avoid a broad- cast storm, but large enough to meet the reachability requirement. If the network is sparse, a higher number of vehicles is needed to retransmit to provide a higher reachability level. So, it is obvious that there is a tradeoff between reachability and bandwidth consumption. In this work, considering the above mentioned challenges, we design a number of smart broadcast protocols and evaluate their performance in various network density scenarios. We use fuzzy logic technique to determine the qualication of vehicles to be forwarders, resulting in reachability enhancement. Then we design a band- width effcient fuzzy logic-assisted broadcast protocol which aggressively suppresses the number of retransmissions. We also propose an intelligent hybrid protocol adapts to local network density. In order to avoid packet collisions and enhance reachability,we design a cross layer statistical broadcast protocol, in which the contention window size is adjusted based on the local density information. We look into the multi-hop broadcast problem with an environment based on game theory. In this scenario, vehicles are players and their strategy is either to volunteer and rebroadcast the received message or defect and wait for others to rebroadcast. We introduce a volunteer dilemma game inspired broadcast scheme to estimate the probability of forwarding for the set of potential forwarding vehicles. In this scheme we also introduce a fuzzy logic-based contention window size adjustment system. Finally, based on the estimated spatial distribution of vehicles, we design a transmission range adaptive scheme with a fuzzy logic-assisted contention window size system, in which a bloom lter method is used to mitigate overhead. Extensive experimental work is obtained using simulation tools to evaluate the performance of the proposed schemes. The results conrm the relative advantages of the proposed protocols for different density scenarios.

Book excerpt: This book investigates intelligent network resource management for IoV, with the objective of maximizing the communication and computing performance of vehicle users. Focusing on two representative use cases in IoV, i.e., safety message broadcast and autonomous driving, the authors propose link-layer protocol design and application-layer computing task scheduling to achieve the objective given the unique characteristics and requirements of IoV. In particular, this book illustrates the challenges of resource management for IoV due to network dynamics, such as time-varying traffic intensity and vehicle mobility, and presents intelligent resource management solutions to adapt to the network dynamics. The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) enables vehicle-to-everything connectivity and supports a variety of applications for vehicles on the road. Intelligent resource management is critical for satisfying demanding communication and computing requirements on IoV, while the highly dynamic network environments pose challenges to the design of resource management schemes. This book provides insights into the significance of adaptive resource management in improving the performance of IoV. The customized communication protocol and computing scheduling scheme are designed accordingly by taking the network dynamics information as an integral design factor. Moreover, the decentralized designs of the proposed solutions guarantee low signaling overhead and high scalability. A comprehensive literature review summarizing recent resource management schemes in IoV, followed by the customized design of communication and computing solutions for the two IoV use cases is included which can serve as a useful reference for professionals from both academia and industry in the area of IoV and resource management. Researchers working within this field and computer science and electrical engineering students will find this book useful as well.
