Book excerpt: The importance of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to current and future military operations cannot be understated. This rapidly developing field requires the ability to quickly develop and evaluate advanced control concepts. The FROG UAV serves as a test bed for advanced control and sensor projects at the Naval Postgraduate School. Previous control system projects have made use of a low performance electromechanical autopilot onboard the UAV. This autopilot imposed significant limitations on the responsiveness of the FROG. This project developed and tested an off board digital flight control system for use in lieu of the previous electromechanical device. The digital flight controller was developed using the Matrixx rapid prototyping system and a previously validated dynamic model of the FROG. Surrogate flight control servo actuators were characterized in the laboratory and added to the plant model. Classic inner/ outer loop controllers were developed for yaw damping and speed, altitude and heading control. The system was then successfully demonstrated%ted with hardware in the loop in the lab. The FROG was then instrumented and a command uplink latency of 170 MS was discovered. This introduced excessive phase lag into the system, which drove the flight controllers unstable. An alternate serial uplink method was developed and tested which reduced the command latency to 76 MS however the remaining phase lag resulted in limit cycle oscillation. Laboratory tests indicated that the current flight controller could withstand a maximum of 50 MS command path delay; without modification.

Book excerpt: Over the last years, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have gradually become a more efficient alternative to manned aircraft, and at present, they are being deployed in a broad spectrum of both military as well as civilian missions. This has led to an unprecedented market expansion with new challenges for the aeronautical industry, and as a result, it has created a need to implement the latest design tools in order to achieve faster idea-to-market times and higher product performance. As a complex engineering product, UAVs are comprised of numerous sub-systems with intricate synergies and hidden dependencies. To this end, Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) is a method that can identify systems with better performance through the concurrent consideration of several engineering disciplines under a common framework. Nevertheless, there are still many limitations in MDO, and to this date, some of the most critical gaps can be found in the disciplinary modeling, in the analysis capabilities, and in the organizational integration of the method. As an aeronautical product, UAVs are also expected to work together with other systems and to perform in various operating environments. In this respect, System of Systems (SoS) models enable the exploration of design interactions in various missions, and hence, they allow decision makers to identify capabilities that are beyond those of each individual system. As expected, this significantly more complex formulation raises new challenges regarding the decomposition of the problem, while at the same time, it sets further requirements in terms of analyses and mission simulation. In this light, this thesis focuses on the design optimization of UAVs by enhancing the current MDO capabilities and by exploring the use of SoS models. Two literature reviews serve as the basis for identifying the gaps and trends in the field, and in turn, five case studies try to address them by proposing a set of expansions. On the whole, the problem is approached from a technical as well as an organizational point of view, and thus, this research aims to propose solutions that can lead to better performance and that are also meaningful to the Product Development Process (PDP). Having established the above foundation, this work delves firstly into MDO, and more specifically, it presents a framework that has been enhanced with further system models and analysis capabilities, efficient computing solutions, and data visualization tools. At a secondary level, this work addresses the topic of SoS, and in particular, it presents a multi-level decomposition strategy, multi-fidelity disciplinary models, and a mission simulation module. Overall, this thesis presents quantitative data which aim to illustrate the benefits of design optimization on the performance of UAVs, and it concludes with a qualitative assessment of the effects that the proposed methods and tools can have on both the PDP and the organization.

Book excerpt: This report describes an evaluation and presents the test results of a Digital Hardware Voter/Monitor used as an input signal selector and fault detector when used in conjunction with an electro-hydraulic control system. The DHVM operated as intended by design although asynchronous operation caused the failure detection to be frequency dependent. A digital filter could be incorporated to reduce the frequency dependency of the failure detection circuitry. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first textbook specially on multicopter systems in the world. It provides a comprehensive overview of multicopter systems, rather than focusing on a single method or technique. The fifteen chapters are divided into five parts, covering the topics of multicopter design, modeling, state estimation, control, and decision-making. It differs from other books in the field in three major respects: it is basic and practical, offering self-contained content and presenting hands-on methods; it is comprehensive and systematic; and it is timely. It is also closely related to the autopilot that users often employ today and provides insights into the code employed. As such, it offers a valuable resource for anyone interested in multicopters, including students, teachers, researchers, and engineers. This introductory text is a welcome addition to the literature on multicopter design and control, on which the author is an acknowledged authority. The book is directed to advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in aeronautical and control (or electrical) engineering, as well as to multicopter designers and hobbyists. ------- Professor W. Murray Wonham, University of Toronto "This is the single best introduction to multicopter control. Clear, comprehensive and progressing from basic principles to advanced techniques, it's a must read for anyone hoping to learn how to design flying robots." ------- Chris Anderson, 3D Robotics CEO.

Book excerpt: Unmanned Rotorcraft Systems explores the research and development of fully-functional miniature UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) rotorcraft, and provides a complete treatment of the design of autonomous miniature rotorcraft UAVs. The unmanned system is an integration of advanced technologies developed in communications, computing, and control areas, and is an excellent testing ground for trialing and implementing modern control techniques. Included are detailed expositions of systematic hardware construction, software systems integration, aerodynamic modeling; and automatic flight control system design. Emphasis is placed on the cooperative control and flight formation of multiple UAVs, vision-based ground target tracking, and landing on moving platforms. Other issues such as the development of GPS-less indoor micro aerial vehicles and vision-based navigation are also discussed in depth: utilizing the vision-based system for accomplishing ground target tracking, attacking and landing, cooperative control and flight formation of multiple unmanned rotorcraft; and future research directions on the related areas.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, a multi-objective control for a research uninhabited aerial vehicle is presented. Using the eigenstructure assignment approach, a flight controller is developed to meet multiple design specifications during a flight mission. The controller is implemented into a digital control system with commercial off-the-shelf actuators. Real-time simulations and hardware-in-the-loop experiments are performed to verify the feasibility of this design. In addition, a comparative analysis of different digital implementation are made. The Kalman filter is further employed to improve the performance of the digital control system.

Book excerpt: Revisitation and extension of classical sampled data approaches for the analysis of discretely controlled continuous systems is the focus of this report. A review of basic linear analysis topics required to support later developments is given. These topics include Laplace, z- and advanced z-transform facts; partial fraction expansion; data holds and the switch decomposition technique. Extension of switch decomposition for the vector signal case is given. A new direct transform domain approach for analyzing two-rate sampled systems is developed. This approach also applies for multi-rate sampled systems in restricted circumstances. Utility of this approach resides in its operator notation and conventions for manipulation in connection with vector block diagram algebra. This, in turn, expedites development of pulse transfer functions and of response recursion relations for multivariable, closed-loop systems. This is accomplished without resorting to the more complicated switch decomposition method. Multi-rate sampling analysis procedures are used to sharpen the concept of 'frequency response' for discretely excited, continuous systems. All methods of analysis presented in this report are closed-form and exact in that no approximation is required in the mathematical development of any result.

Book excerpt: Proposed concepts for the next generation of combat (scout/attack) helicopters are to be embodied in a complex, highly maneuverable, multiroled vehicle with avionics systems which are as important to mission success as the airframe itself. Single pilot and nap-of-the-Earth operations require handling qualities which minimize the involvement of the pilot in basic stabilization tasks. To meet these requirements will demand a full authority, high-gain, multimode, multiply-redundant, digital flight-control system. The gap between these requirements and current low-authority, low-bandwidth operational rotorcraft flight-control technology is considerable. this research aims at smoothing the transition between current technology and advanced concept requirements. The report: (a) extensively reviews the state of the art of high-bandwidth digital flight-control systems; (b) illustrates the important concepts in design and analysis of high-gain, digital systems with a detailed case study involving a current rotorcraft system. Frequency-domain methods for design and analysis are stressed in this report as essential for the practical implementation of high-gain control systems for rotorcraft. Approximate and exact methods are explained and illustrated for treating the important concerns which are unique to digital systems. Proposed specifications and flight-test data concerning the handling qualities of scout/attack rotorcraft imply restrictions on the maximum effective time delay which must be carefully considered in the design process.

Book excerpt: Project Report from the year 2012 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, grade: A, DeVry University, course: ECET 494, language: English, abstract: The objective of this project is to design, build, and operate a GPS-Guided Autopilot system for Radio Controlled Aircraft. This product will have to be small, lightweight, aerodynamic, and modular. It will only have to rely on 1 channel input from the aircraft receiver for the RC/Autopilot switching function. It will have to be able to fly a predetermined route while having the ability for the consumer to override the autopilot feature if desired by using their remote control. Our RC aircraft autopilot system will be interfaced with a computer in order to program the way-points that will make up the flight plan. All of these objectives are critical in order to have a functional RC aircraft autopilot system. Our time frame for completion of this project is 32 weeks and our target for total cost for the build is $500. The product that we are proposing is a GPS-Guided Autopilot System designed for radio-controlled aircraft. This project is a modular RC/Autopilot Aircraft System that will be designed for small, inexpensive, and basic radio controlled unmanned aerial vehicles. Although our target market will be RC hobbyists that are interested in flying their airplanes autonomously, our system will also have the potential to expand to larger markets such as hobbyists flying helicopters as well as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles used in the military. There will be three phases to this project, Phase (1) is our goal and is dedicated as the Autopilot function once the aircraft has reached altitude. Phase (2) is the addition of Autopilot landing, and Phase (3) is the addition of Autopilot takeoff. Phases (2) and (3) are left as optional and will be completed if and only if the team has enough time before the end of the series of Senior Project courses. The project can be broken down into three basic modules to perform these tasks. These modules are the Sensing module, the Receiver/Processor module, and a flight Control module. The combination of these three modules will be assembled to form the autopilot function. The Sensing module will consist of a GPS antenna and a signal processor along with a 2-axis gyroscope and a 3-axis accelerometer. The GPS signal from satellites will be processed into information that will be used by the receiver/processor module to send flight path corrections to the flight control module to keep the aircraft on the programmed path. The flight controls affected by the GPS signals will be the engine speed and the rudder.
