Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gas turbine test facility air system has been designed to meet specified design objectives. An analytical evaluation was performed on the air system design to verify that these design objectives were achieved. A key element of the air system is an exhaust eductor which was included in the design to provide secondary cooling air flow through the engine test cell. Two analytical models were developed to evaluate exhaust eductor performance. A one-dimensional, incompressible eductor model was developed that predicts the basic eductor performance parameters including the amount of secondary air flow drawn through the engine test cell for varying eductor configurations. This model also predicts overall air system performance parameters. An eductor computational fluid dynamics analytical model was developed that provides a more detailed analysis of the flow in the eductor.

This revision includes new case histories, the latest techniques, and new designs to comply with recently passed legislation. By keeping the book up to date with new, emerging topics, Boyce ensures that this book will remain the standard and most widely used book in this field. The new Third Edition of the Gas Turbine Engineering Hand Book updates the book to cover the new generation of Advanced gas Turbines. It examines the benefit and some of the major problems that have been encountered by these new turbines. The book keeps abreast of the environmental changes and the industries answer to these new regulations. A new chapter on case histories has been added to enable the engineer in the field to keep abreast of problems that are being encountered and the solutions that have resulted in solving them. - Comprehensive treatment of Gas Turbines from Design to Operation and Maintenance. In depth treatment of Compressors with emphasis on surge, rotating stall, and choke; Combustors with emphasis on Dry Low NOx Combustors; and Turbines with emphasis on Metallurgy and new cooling schemes. An excellent introductory book for the student and field engineers - A special maintenance section dealing with the advanced gas turbines, and special diagnostic charts have been provided that will enable the reader to troubleshoot problems he encounters in the field - The third edition consists of many Case Histories of Gas Turbine problems. This should enable the field engineer to avoid some of these same generic problems

Book excerpt: The paper discusses in general terms the activities required to be undertaken or demonstrated during the establishment of the facility such as: the assessment checks prior to forwarding to the end users site for embodiment into the facility system the establishment of the facility such as trial installations of hardware, functionality checking of lifting transportation and access systems, centerline pull checks, pressure testing of fuel and air start systems, flushing of wet systems and electrical continuity checking. the commissioning of the facility such as instrumentation calibrations, engine starts, engine running, assessment of command and control system, assessment of DAS system, aerodynamic and acoustic surveys. The paper will concentrate on the main engineering engine related aspects of the facility and will not necessarily contain information on the construction validation activities such as HVAC, electrical, facility fire system, waste water etc.Risk analysis may be performed during the design phase whose results could lead to pay particular attention to some specific equipment / functionalities during the commissioning phase. If identified, these risks should be translated to specific tests and integrated into the validation plan, either at the factory or on site or both.If the test cell is designed to test several engine types, the acceptance process should validate upon which engine the test cell will be commissioned these discussions should take place at the early stage of the design process if not during the bidding phase. Moreover, an agreement between the Contractor and the Customer may have to be reached in order to clearly define how the scaling will be demonstrated in the case of the available engine types for commissioning are not representative of the full capacity upon which the facility is designed (e.g. the requirements are assessed based on future engine types). It is particularly relevant to air flow and acoustic levels and tones where effects aren't only linear.Correlation activities are outside the scope of this document.Document is primary intended for typical overhaul (MRO) test cells. Development/Production facilities may include additional and specific equipment that requires dedicated shakedown and commissioning processes and procedures issued directly from the OEMs. Outdoor test cell specifics are not covered by this document. This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) is intended to provide guidance and recommendations to future or existing users of turbofan, turbojet, and turboshaft/turboprop gas turbine engine test facilities regarding commissioning readiness of new, modified, or re-located facilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Validation of compressor aerodynamic design can be obtained through in-engine testing with considerable investment of time and money, or in rig testing, wherein a range of interchangeable designs can be tested without exposure to effects of other engine components. To more rapidly explore centrifugal and mixed-flow compressor designs for small, thrust-producing aviation gas-turbine engines, called turbojets, the Air ForceResearch Laboratories (AFRL) initiated development of a test apparatus to be integrated into an existing test facility at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB). Design of the inlet flow conditioning and measuring system, mechanical systems, exhaust discharge valve, and exhaust collector is accomplished through sizing calculations, aerodynamic and mechanical analysis. This thesis project presents the final design of this small-turbojet compressor test facility, capable of testing virtually the entire operating map of compressors in the desired size range. Fabrication of the test rig is underway as of the conclusion of this thesis; component testing, assembly, and initial test article testing is planned thereafter.

Book excerpt: A gas turbine engine test cell was developed integrating an Allison T63-A-700 helicopter engine with a superflow water brake dynamometer power absorber. Design specifications were set on all systems and subsystems necessary to operate the engine. Preliminary and detailed designs of the air, water, fuel, and oil systems were developed producing a construction ready overall design. Performance predictions were made which will be compared to experimental data obtained from system operation. Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Emergency Operational Procedures (EOP) were developed for engine and auxiliary equipment operation. Preliminary measurements for the structural response of the engine mounting have been made which set engine operating boundaries. The facility has been built and is ready for operation.

Book excerpt: This long-awaited, physics-first and design-oriented text describes and explains the underlying flow and heat transfer theory of secondary air systems. An applications-oriented focus throughout the book provides the reader with robust solution techniques, state-of-the-art three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methodologies, and examples of compressible flow network modeling. It clearly explains elusive concepts of windage, non-isentropic generalized vortex, Ekman boundary layer, rotor disk pumping, and centrifugally-driven buoyant convection associated with gas turbine secondary flow systems featuring rotation. The book employs physics-based, design-oriented methodology to compute windage and swirl distributions in a complex rotor cavity formed by surfaces with arbitrary rotation, counter-rotation, and no rotation. This text will be a valuable tool for aircraft engine and industrial gas turbine design engineers as well as graduate students enrolled in advanced special topics courses.

Book excerpt: This thesis is a three-dimensional numerical analysis of Gas Turbine Test Cell 1 at Lemoore Naval Air Station, California. The Parabolic, Hyperbolic, or Elliptic Numerical Integration Code (PHOENICS) is used to determine the steady-state aerothermal characteristics within the test cell during the full power run-up of a GE F404 gas turbine engine (afterburner in operation). The method in which PHOENICS arrives at a solution is discussed as well as how the code was applied to this problem. The solution of the problem is presented in tabular form and the results are discussed. Recommendations for the future application of PHOENICS to this project are given. Keywords: Gas turbine test cell, Aerothermal properties, PHOENICS.
