Book excerpt: This first book to examine the Jewish state through the lens of Jewish utopian thought, from its biblical beginnings to modernity, offers a fresh perspective on the political, religious, and geopolitical life of Israel. As Marc J. Rosenstein argues, the Jewish people's collective memories, desires, hopes, and faith have converged to envision an ideal life in the Land of Israel--but, critically, the legacy is a kaleidoscope of conflicting (and sometimes overlapping) visions. And after three millennia of imagining utopia, it is almost impossible for Jews to respond to Israel's realities without being influenced--even unconsciously--by these images. Charting the place of utopian thought in Judaism, Rosenstein then illustrates, with original texts, diverse utopian visions of the Jewish state: Torah state (Yavetz), holy community (based on nostalgic memories of the medieval community), national-cultural home (Lewinsky), "normal" state (Herzl), socialist paradise (Syrkin), anarchy (Jabotinsky), and a polity defined by Israel's historic or divinely ordained borders. Analyzing how these disparate utopian visions collide in Israel's attempts to chart policy and practice regarding the Sabbath, social welfare, immigration, developing versus conserving the land, and the Israel-Diaspora relationship yields novel perspectives on contemporary flashpoints. His own utopian vision offers a further entryway for both Israelis and Diaspora Jews into more informed and nuanced conversations about the "Jewish state."

Book excerpt: Many well-known male writers produced fictions about colonial spaces and discussed the advantages of realism over romance, and vice versa, in the ‘art of fiction’ debate of the 1880s; but how did female writers contribute to colonial fiction? This volume links fictional, non-fictional and pictorial representations of a colonial otherness with the late nineteenth-century artistic concerns about representational conventions and possibilities. The author explores these texts and images through the postcolonial framework of ‘exoticism’, arguing that the epistemological dilemma of a ‘self’ encountering an ‘other’ results in the interrelated predicament to find poetic modalities – mimetic, realistic and documentary on the one hand; romantic, fantastic and picturesque on the other – that befit an ‘exotic’ representation. Thus women writers did not only participate in the making of colonial fictions but also in the late nineteenth-century artistic debate about the nature of fiction. This book maps the epistemological concerns of exoticism and of difference – self and other, home and away, familiarity and strangeness – onto the representational modes of realism and romance. The author focuses exclusively on female novelists, travel writers and painters of the turn-of-the-century exotic, and especially on neglected authors of academically under-researched genres such as the bestselling novel and the travelogue.

Book excerpt: Outrageously handsome, witty and clever, Harry Cust was reputed to be one of the great womanisers of the late Victorian era. In 1893, while a Member of Parliament, he caused public scandal by his affair with artist and poet Nina Welby Gregory. When she revealed she was pregnant, horror swept through their circle known as 'the Souls', a cultured, mostly aristocratic group of writers, artists and politicians who also rubbed shoulders with luminaries such as Oscar Wilde and H. G. Wells. For the rest of their lives, Harry and Nina would fight to rebuild their reputations and maintain the marriage they were pressurised to enter. In Tangled Souls, acclaimed biographer Jane Dismore tells the tumultuous story of the romance which threatened to tear apart this distinguished group of friends, revealing pre-war society at its most colourful and most conflicted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birds and Arrows is a poetry collection centering on the spirituality of desire. As verbal designs, these poems reflect the shape and movement of birds and arrows in flight. Each sequence in counterpoint traces the arc of a journey, a quest with joys and sorrows, a sense of delight, and feelings of grief. The quester is an archer contending with the mystifying forces of life and love. Faced with the bewildering and mysterious aspects of the world, the archer yearns for the visible and the divine. The road leads to an apprehension of a love greater than the one once imagined. The archer yearns for the perfect arrow that will hit the target of understanding. The seeker longs to find the self-surrendering of love as a way forward in the world. The mystic archer is wounded in battle in the face of life's dangers, but still strives for mystical experiences in the real world. The poems in Birds and Arrows aim at such a target in the belief that the quest is real and true. Voices fly past, like arrows and birds in flight, and the reader senses their whirring sound, their call and cry.

Book excerpt: Allen R. Guenther brings an evangelical believers church perspective to the study of two eighth-century B.C. prophets. He explores theological and practical implications of their message, which he applies to the contemporary church. This work compares Israel’s distinctive religion, influenced by Baal-worshiping Phoenician neighbors, with faith in Judah. In his own marriage, Hosea dramatizes God’s redeeming love. Amos’s exposure of shallow piety and injustice brings him into confrontation with the official priest at Bethel. For both prophets, the Lord’s judgment is to lead on to repentance and restoration.
