Book excerpt: Abrigando mais da metade dos estabelecimentos rurais de base familiar do país, o Nordeste brasileiro está ameaçado de ver a maior parte desse imenso potencial de trabalho e produção desaparecer, rm função de políticas públicas de desenvolvimento ineficazes, em termos de permitir uma efetiva inserção dessas unidades do mercado, de modo especial na região semi-árida. A pesquisa agrícola compartilha responsabilidade nesse processo, uma vez que não foi capaz de incorporar às suas ações uma visão mais abrangente da problemática do agricultor familiar. Essa situação começa, contudo a se modificar na região. As experiências de construção de metodologias multidisciplinares e participativas adaptadas à realidades locais, começam a se multiplicar, prenunciando a obtenção de resultados mais objetivos pela pesquisa. Três dessas metodologias, o zoneamento municipal em unidades de desenvolvimento, o diagnóstico rápido dos circuitos de comercialização e transformação e a validação de tecnologias através dos testes de ajuste, descritas neste trabalho, são exemplos desse esforço da pesquisa na busca de uma maior objetividade.

Book excerpt: O desenvolvimento rural entendido como a somatória de conquistas não apenas no campo econômico, mas também social, político, ambiental e cultural, tem-se constituído preocupação constante dos órgãos de pesquisa e extensão, ONGs e poder público, comprometidos com a melhoria das condições de vida da população do campo. Por outro lado, estas instituições têm sido constantemente criticadas pela ineficácia dos projetos implementados neste sendido. Uma das críticas mais contundentes diz respeito às metodologias que ignoram o protagonismo dos agricultores nos programas de pesquisa e desenvolvimento. O texto a seguir discute a viabilidade de se adotar abordagens qualitativas a na pesquisa em agricultura familiar, explicitando as vantagens deste paradigma para o estudo deste cmplexo sistema agrário. Embora crescente, o número de pesquisadores que utilizam referenciais qualitativos ainda é insuficiente para responder a demanda desta população, historicamente marginalizada nos processos de desenvolvimento. Neste cenário, o texto busca demarcar as diferenças entre paradigmas quantitativo e qualitativo e, ao mesmo tempo, ressaltar a importância de se buscar a complementaridade entre ambos, de forma a garantir maior eficácia nas pesquisas em agricultura familiar.
