Book Synopsis Catalogue of Sanskrit Manuscripts by : Hartmut Buescher
Download or read book Catalogue of Sanskrit Manuscripts written by Hartmut Buescher and published by Comdc. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new catalogue describes the holdings of the so-called Pandit Collection held at the Royal Library, Copenhagen. A diverse collection of more than 1,200 Sanskrit texts, it comprises codices ranging in length from several hundred folios to a single folio, or a manuscript fragment, often produced by educated (or in other cases by less educated) scribes. The Pandit Collection was purchased in Pune (Maharashtra) in the early 1920s from its now-unknown previous owner by the Danish indologist Poul Tuxen. As its name suggests, it is the Sanskrit manuscript collection of a pandit, a traditionally educated Indian scholar, part of it acquired by earlier generations of his brahmanic family. That makes the collection interesting from cultural-historical and anthropological points of view since it documents the wide range of learning, professional tasks and social functions that were covered by Indian scholars active in the last days of their pre-modern educational and scholarly tradition. Designed especially as an essential source of reference for scholars working in all aspects of manuscript studies, the catalogue includes numerous illustrations (many in colour) that help to identify the texts and give a glimpse of the condition, calligraphic styles and decorative elements of the manuscripts.

Book Synopsis Colonialism, Orientalism and the Dravidian Languages by : K. Venkateswarlu
Download or read book Colonialism, Orientalism and the Dravidian Languages written by K. Venkateswarlu and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dravidian language family is marked historically by a protracted struggle between Tamil and its aggressively assertive supremacy, and the consequent peripheralizing of other majoritarian languages of the region. This book looks at the development of Telugu — with its unique grammatical and lexical tradition as instrumental in the construction of the concept of the Dravidian language family in 1816, and in the development of comparative linguistics since that time. The author’s arguments locate Telugu in multiple matrices: of historical and theoretical Orientalism; the colonial state’s interest in native languages; the politics of state patronage; questions of cultural assimilation and divergence; the overbearing presence of Tamil and its literary traditions; and the related inter- and intra-civilizational dialogues. The book thus grapples with the tortured emergence of Telugu — a product of the dynamics of Andhra society, economy, polity and culture influenced and driven by Muslim, Hindu and Western influence. With its richly textured narrative, this book will be of interest to those in the fields of history, sociology, socio-linguistics, colonial studies, and literature, apart from the generally interested reader.
Book Synopsis Reading History with the Tamil Jainas by : R. Umamaheshwari
Download or read book Reading History with the Tamil Jainas written by R. Umamaheshwari and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a social history of the Tamil Jainas, a minority community living in Tamil Nadu in south India. It holds special significance in the method of studying the community, living in villages of Tamil Nadu and retrieving their perspectives on their past. This is a new approach in terms of historiography from extant works on Jainism in south India. A major feature of this book is the hitherto uncovered aspect of the question of language and identity, caste and the modern socio-political movements in Tamil Nadu, such as the Self-Respect Movement (initiated by ‘Periyar’), in which some Tamil Jainas were active participants. Special features in the book include photographs of the community and monuments, maps, and a unique style, which combines a journalistic approach and academic historical research. This book is of interest to readers of Tamil language and history, and to anyone working on the idea of politics of marginalisation of religious identities, ide as of memory, and community narratives of shared history in the face of religious persecution.
