Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fossil Turtles of North America In this treatise on the Fossil Turtles of North America there are described 266 species, of which 76 are regarded as hitherto unknown to science. In the preparation of this work the writer has had access to most of the collections which contain remains of North American fossil turtles. The most important of these collections is that of the American Museum of Natural History, in New York. In this are found many of the specimens described by Professor E. D. Cope, including many of his types. In addition to these, large numbers of turtles have been brought together by the expeditions sent out by this museum during the past fifteen years. Free access has been given the writer to the materials in the United States National Museum, where there are many of the specimens described by Dr. Joseph Leidy and Professor Cope; to those of the Academy of Natural Science of Philadelphia, where are found other materials rendered precious by the labors of the authors just mentioned; to those of the Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh; the Field Natural History Museum, Chicago; the University of Kansas, Lawrence; the University of Texas, and the University of Nebraska. At Yale University the writer has been permitted to study and describe valuable materials brought together by Professor O. C. Marsh, besides other specimens which form the types of species described more recently by Dr. George R. Wieland. Thru the courtesy of Professor W. S. Valiant some of Dr. Leidy's types preserved at Rutgers College were made accessible. Specimens for study have been sent to the writer from most of the museums mentioned; also from the University of Chicago, by Mr. S. W. Williston; from the University of California, by Dr. J. C. Merriam; from the Geological Survey of Canada, by Mr. L. M. Lambe; and from the Vanderbilt University, Nashville, by Professor L. C. Glenn. It has been the author's earnest wish to see all the types of the hitherto described species; and most of these have come under his notice. Unfortunately some are without doubt utterly lost; others have, for the time, disappeared from view. The author has endeavored to illustrate as fully as possible the species described. Whatever may prove to be the little or great value of the text, the writer can commend the illustrations. By far the greater number of the figures of the plates are from photographs which were taken at the American Museum of Natural History by Mr. A. E. Anderson. Other photographs and drawings have been furnished by the Geological Survey of Canada thru Mr. L. M. Lambe; others by Dr. George R. Wieland, of the Yale University Museum; others by Dr. W. J. Holland, director of the Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh. The photographs of Basilemys sinuosa came from the Field Natural History Museum, thru Dr. E. R. Riggs. A considerable number of the drawings found in the plates were prepared many years ago, for the late Dr. George Baur, by the United States Geological Survey; thru the courtesy of the Survey these were placed in the hands of the writer. The majority of the drawings that appear in the text were executed by Mrs. Lindsay Morris Sterling, artist in the department of vertebrate paleontology in the American Museum of Natural History. Book excerpt: This volume celebrates the contributions of Dr. Eugene Gaffney to the study of turtles, through a diverse and complementary collection of papers that showcases the latest research on one of the most intriguing groups of reptiles. A mix of focused and review papers deals with numerous aspects of the evolutionary history of turtles, including embryonic development, origins, early diversification, phylogenetic relationships, and biogeography. Moreover it includes reports on important but poorly understood fossil turtle assemblages, provides historical perspectives on turtle research, and documents disease and variation in turtles. With its broad scope, which includes descriptions of material and new taxa from Australia, Asia, and Europe, as well as North and South America, this work will be an essential resource for anyone interested in the morphology and evolution of turtles. “This volume’s breadth of time, geography, and taxonomic coverage makes it a major contribution to the field and a ‘must have’ for all vertebrate paleontologists.”, James F. Parham, California State University, CA, USA “A comprehensive and sweeping overview of turtle evolution by the top experts in the field that will interest everyone curious about these unique reptiles.” Jason S. Anderson, University of Calgary, Canada “An invaluable addition to the literature that covers the full spectrum of approaches toward understanding the evolution of these noble creatures.” Ann C. Burke, Wesleyan University, CT , USA “A truly comprehensive volume that both the student of fossil turtles, as well as the general reader interested in these enigmatic creatures, will find fascinating.” Tyler Lyson, Yale University, CT, USA

Legler and Vogt draw on more than fifty years of fieldwork to elucidate the natural history of these species. The volume includes an extensive introduction to turtle anatomy, taxonomy, phylogeny, biogeography, and physiology. A key to the turtles of Mexico is included along with individual species accounts featuring geographic distribution maps and detailed color illustrations. Specific topics discussed for each species include habitat, diet, feeding behavior, reproduction, predators, parasites, growth and ontogeny, sexual dimorphism, growth rings, economic use, conservation, legal protection, and taxonomic studies. This book is a complete reference for scientists, conservationists, and professional and amateur enthusiasts who wish to study Mexican turtles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once a familiar backyard visitor in many parts of the United States and Mexico, the box turtle is losing the battle against extinction. In North American Box Turtles, C. Kenneth Dodd, Jr., has written the first book-length natural history of the twelve species and subspecies of this endangered animal. This volume includes comprehensive information on the species’ evolution, behavior, courtship and reproduction, habitat use, diet, population structure, systematics, and disease. Special features include color photos of all species, subspecies, and their habitats; a simple identification guide to both living and fossil species; and a summary of information on fossil Terrapene and Native uses of box turtles. End-of-chapter sections highlight future research directions, including the need for long-term monitoring and observation of box turtles within their natural habitat and conservation applications. A glossary and a bibliography of literature on box turtles accompany the text. All royalties from the sales of this volume will go to the Chelonian Research Foundation, a nonprofit foundation for the conservation of turtles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important volume reviews the status of investigations aimed at deciphering the geologic, biogeographic, and archaeological records for the Quaternary Era—the last million years of geologic time-for the area of continental United States. Over eighty Quaternary scientists have contributed to the fifty-five chapters divided into four main parts. Part 1 treats the areal geology, with emphasis on the stratigraphy of the glaciated areas east of the Rocky Mountains, unglaciated eastern and central United States, and western United States. Part 2 deals with biogeography: phytogeography and palynology, animal geography and evolution. Part 3 deals with archaeology prehistory in the northeastern states, southeastern states, plains, desert west, and Pacific Coast including Alaska. Part 4 covers many diverse Quaternary studies on—the continental shelves, isotope geochemistry, paleopedology, the geochemistry of some lake sediments, paleohydrology, glaciers and climate, volcanic-ash chronology, paleomagnetism, neo-tectonics, dendrochronology, and theoretical paleoclimatology. Originally published in 1965.
