Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication presents the recent experience of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in respect of industrial policy design and technical assistance for the Governments of two Central American countries: El Salvador and Guatemala. It adopts a value chain approach to identify in detail the restrictions facing these chains, both as a whole and at each of their links. Strategies aimed at strengthening value chains are participatory (public-private) and act as a driver of structural change by boosting productivity and value added, especially among small producers.

The authors discuss the neoliberal model of capitalist development, the privatization of key sectors and enterprises, the human cost of structural adjustment, and the search for a community-based form of local development.

Book excerpt: This publication develops a simple appreciative model, which explores some of the issues faced by structural reforms, technological gaps and economic development in Latin America. The first section introduces the issues and provides an overview of the publication. Section two introduces a brief view as to how the evolutionary approach should be adapted to analyze the impact of recent structural reforms upon the specialization pattern and technological capabilities accumulated in so called developing economies. Section three provides a simple macro-to-micro model of the stabilization cum structural reform process. Sections four and five are devoted to investigating recent changes in the pattern of production specialization of the Latin American economies and the relationship such changes have with the exit and entry of firms.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does enterprise participation in global markets ensure sustainable income growth? Policies have often been designed in the belief that this is true, but competitiveness and participation in international markets may take very different forms, and developing countries do not always benefit. This book presents a series of rich and original field studies from Latin America, conducted by the authors with the same consistent methodological approach, and represents a theory-generating exercise within clusters and economic development literature. The main question addressed is how Latin American small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may participate in global markets in ways that provide for sustainable income growth, the “high road” to competitiveness. In contrast, the “low road” is often typically followed by small firms from developing countries, which often compete by squeezing wages and revenues rather than by increasing productivity, salaries, and profits.
