Book Synopsis The Politics of Mapping by : Bernard Debarbieux
Download or read book The Politics of Mapping written by Bernard Debarbieux and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-05-20 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maps and mapping are fundamentally political. Whether they are authoritarian, hegemonic, participatory or critical, they are most often guided by the desire to have control over space, and always involve power relations. This book takes stock of the knowledge acquired and the debates conducted in the field of critical cartography over some thirty years. The Politics of Mapping includes analyses of recent semiological, social and technological innovations in the production and use of maps and, more generally, geographical information. The chapters are the work of specialists in the field, in the form of a thematic analysis, a theoretical essay, or a reflection on a professional, scientific or militant practice. From mapping issues for modern states to the digital and big data era, from maps produced by Indigenous peoples or migrant–advocacy organizations in Europe, the perspectives are both historical and contemporary.
Book Synopsis Routledge Handbook of Food as a Commons by : Jose Luis Vivero-Pol
Download or read book Routledge Handbook of Food as a Commons written by Jose Luis Vivero-Pol and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the scientific and industrial revolution to the present day, food – an essential element of life – has been progressively transformed into a private, transnational, mono-dimensional commodity of mass consumption for a global market. But over the last decade there has been an increased recognition that this can be challenged and reconceptualized if food is regarded and enacted as a commons. This Handbook provides the first comprehensive review and synthesis of knowledge and new thinking on how food and food systems can be thought, interpreted and practiced around the old/new paradigms of commons and commoning. The overall aim is to investigate the multiple constraints that occur within and sustain the dominant food and nutrition regime and to explore how it can change when different elements of the current food systems are explored and re-imagined from a commons perspective. Chapters do not define the notion of commons but engage with different schools of thought: the economic approach, based on rivalry and excludability; the political approach, recognizing the plurality of social constructions and incorporating epistemologies from the South; the legal approach that describes three types of proprietary regimes (private, public and collective) and different layers of entitlement (bundles of rights); and the radical-activist approach that considers the commons as the most subversive, coherent and history-rooted alternative to the dominant neoliberal narrative. These schools have different and rather diverging epistemologies, vocabularies, ideological stances and policy proposals to deal with the construction of food systems, their governance, the distributive implications and the socio-ecological impact on Nature and Society. The book sparks the debate on food as a commons between and within disciplines, with particular attention to spaces of resistance (food sovereignty, de-growth, open knowledge, transition town, occupations, bottom-up social innovations) and organizational scales (local food, national policies, South–South collaborations, international governance and multi-national agreements). Overall, it shows the consequences of a shift to the alternative paradigm of food as a commons in terms of food, the planet and living beings.
Book Synopsis Ecodesign and Ecoinnovation in the Food Industries by : Gwenola Yannou-Le Bris
Download or read book Ecodesign and Ecoinnovation in the Food Industries written by Gwenola Yannou-Le Bris and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovations of agri-food systems during the last 50 years have been guided by a globalized agro-industrial paradigm, which has contributed to climate change, degradation of natural resources, soil depletion, social inequalities, loss of biodiversity and various food-related health problems. Despite the increasing emphasis of food policies and research to address these issues with ecologically sustainable innovations, there are still no studies that explain how to utilize and integrate ecodesign practices in food products development in a world of finite resources. This book explains how to employ ecodesign in business models to address the economic, social, environmental, and nutritional problems that face the worlds food systems. The lessons of the ÉcoTrophélia project ? a unique program implemented by a group of European agricultural higher education institutions to involve students in designing and developing food ecoinnovation projects ? are explored. Through an analysis of these projects, the authors describe the tools, methods and standards that were developed to institute ecodesign into the business models of 11 ecologically-friendly food products. This book provides operational good practices that can be implemented in educational programs and agri-food industries, to orient learning and practices towards greater sustainability.

Book Synopsis The Memory of Nature in Aboriginal, Canadian and American Contexts by : Françoise Besson
Download or read book The Memory of Nature in Aboriginal, Canadian and American Contexts written by Françoise Besson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-12 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume engages the reader’s interest in the relationship that binds man to nature, a relationship which makes itself manifest through certain literary or visual artefacts produced by Native or non-Native writers and artists. It ranges from the study of literatures (mainly from Canada – including Quebec and Acadia – but also from Britain, the United States of America, France, Turkey, and Australia) to the exploration of films, photographs, paintings and sculptures produced by Aboriginal artists from North America. Thanks to a relational paradigm founded on spatial and temporal enlargement, it re-imagines the critical outlook on indigenous production by instigating a dialogue between endogenous and exogenous scholars, novelists and artists, and by weaving together interdisciplinary approaches spanning anthropology, geology, ecocriticism and the study of myths. From the writings by Scott Momaday to those by Tomson Highway, from Pauline Johnson to Louise Erdrich, or from the photographs by William McFarlane Notman and Edward Burtynsky or the films by Randy Redroad to the paintings by Emily Carr, it explores art as the sedimentation of nature. It simultaneously interrogates the representation of nature and the nature of representation as a geological and generic process inscribed in the history of mankind. Without eclipsing differences and imposing a reified Eurocentric critical discourse upon indigenous productions, this volume does not colonize indigenous texts or indulge in cultural appropriation of works of art, but looks for historical, mythological or geological traces of the past; a past characterized by the intimacy between man and animal, man and rock, or man and plant, a past which is allowed to resurface through the creative and critical outlooks that are bestowed upon its subjacent or subterranean existence. It resurfaces, not as nostalgic memory but as an interactive fertilization giving the present a new life in which the non-human provides a key to the understanding of the human bond to nature.
Book Synopsis Ex(tra)territorial by : Didier Lassalle
Download or read book Ex(tra)territorial written by Didier Lassalle and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a judicial concept dating back to the 17th century, the term ex(tra)territoriality has long excited the interest of scholars and writers who have, since the 20th century, not hesitated to appropriate the notion, widening and transforming it in the process. This transfer to the field of humanities has opened a new space of reflection, a space for imagination, through the means of a creative re-reading, among others, which has given rise to new but related concepts such as “deterritorialization”. To take into account the growing importance of this extraterritoriality paradigm reassessing the idea of territory in literature, culture and languages, this book offers an interdisciplinary and plurilingual journey through four centuries, four continents and a dozen languages, from literature to new media, encompassing philosophy, history, linguistics, the press, the cinema...

Book Synopsis Drip Irrigation for Agriculture by : Jean-Philippe Venot
Download or read book Drip Irrigation for Agriculture written by Jean-Philippe Venot and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Initially associated with hi-tech irrigated agriculture, drip irrigation is now being used by a much wider range of farmers in emerging and developing countries. This book documents the enthusiasm, spread and use of drip irrigation systems by smallholders but also some disappointments and disillusion faced in the global South. It explores and explains under which conditions it works, for whom and with what effects. The book deals with drip irrigation 'behind the scenes', showcasing what largely remain 'untold stories'. Most research on drip irrigation use plot-level studies to demonstrate the technology’s ability to save water or improve efficiencies and use a narrow and rather prescriptive engineering or economic language. They tend to be grounded in a firm belief in the technology and focus on the identification of ways to improve or better realize its potential. The technology also figures prominently in poverty alleviation or agricultural modernization narratives, figuring as a tool to help smallholders become more innovative, entrepreneurial and business minded. Instead of focusing on its potential, this book looks at drip irrigation-in-use, making sense of what it does from the perspectives of the farmers who use it, and of the development workers and agencies, policymakers, private companies, local craftsmen, engineers, extension agents or researchers who engage with it for a diversity of reasons and to realize a multiplicity of objectives. While anchored in a sound engineering understanding of the design and operating principles of the technology, the book extends the analysis beyond engineering and hydraulics to understand drip irrigation as a sociotechnical phenomenon that not only changes the way water is supplied to crops but also transforms agricultural farming systems and even how society is organized. The book provides field evidence from a diversity of interdisciplinary case studies in sub-Saharan Africa, the Mediterranean, Latin America, and South Asia, thus revealing some of the untold stories of drip irrigation.
Book Synopsis Ecosystem services and social equity by : Vallet, A.
Download or read book Ecosystem services and social equity written by Vallet, A. and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2020-11-19 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Key messages Stakeholders have different roles in the co-production of ecosystem services, e.g. they can be direct or indirect managers or beneficiaries. There are mismatches between those who manage and those who depend on or benefit from ecosystem services. Different forms of inequities are tied to these roles and can threaten the resilience of socio-ecological systems. Power asymmetries influence stakeholders’ roles in relation to ecosystem services, including their participation in ecosystem services governance. Insights into roles, power and inequities can be useful for designing participatory governance mechanisms.
Book Synopsis Hunters, Predators and Prey by : Frédéric Laugrand
Download or read book Hunters, Predators and Prey written by Frédéric Laugrand and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inuit hunting traditions are rich in perceptions, practices and stories relating to animals and human beings. The authors examine key figures such as the raven, an animal that has a central place in Inuit culture as a creator and a trickster, and qupirruit, a category consisting of insects and other small life forms. After these non-social and inedible animals, they discuss the dog, the companion of the hunter, and the fellow hunter, the bear, considered to resemble a human being. A discussion of the renewal of whale hunting accompanies the chapters about animals considered ‘prey par excellence’: the caribou, the seals and the whale, symbol of the whole. By giving precedence to Inuit categories such as ‘inua’ (owner) and ‘tarniq’ (shade) over European concepts such as ‘spirit ‘and ‘soul’, the book compares and contrasts human beings and animals to provide a better understanding of human-animal relationships in a hunting society.

Download or read book Postcoloniality written by Margaret A. Majumdar and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postcolonial theory is one of the key issues of scholarly debates worldwide; debates, so the author argues, which are rather sterile and characterized by a repetitive reworking of old hackneyed issues, focussing on cultural questions of language and identity in particular. She explores the divergent responses to the debates on globalization.
