Book Synopsis The Cultivation of Monarchy and the Rise of Berlin by : Karin Friedrich
Download or read book The Cultivation of Monarchy and the Rise of Berlin written by Karin Friedrich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The start of the eighteenth century witnessed the elevation of Prussia to monarchic status, a reflection of the rising importance of the Hohenzollern dynasty within the Empire as well as in Central Europe. In tandem with this, Berlin came to the fore as the capital city of Brandenburg, with the establishment there of the royal court. This volume makes available for the first time a selection of the diverse printed and visual materials relating to these developments. In their introduction to the documents, the editors explore the historical, political and cultural context of the rise of the Hohenzollerns and the significance of the 1701 coronation of Friedrich III as King in Prussia. The materials provided in the original, as well as in English translation, are wide-ranging. Points of focus include the dynasty's cultivation of the arts and learning, its festive culture, the structure of the court and the nature of Friedrich's reign. Particular attention is given to the ceremonial procedure and festivities surrounding his coronation recorded by the court poet, Johann von Besser. This collection of materials acts as a commentary on Baroque kingship, revealing the manner in which the early eighteenth-century monarch wished to present himself to the outside world and enhance his legitimacy among European rulers. It also offers valuable insights into a key stage in the political and cultural history of Brandenburg-Prussia, the consequences of which exercised a crucial impact on the development of Germany and the history of Europe.

Book excerpt: Mistrenelle A city of law and peace, the center of the world. It is a city-kingdom protected by the mysterious Witch Hunters, ruled by those who threw off the shackles of magic. Only the nightly witch hunts remain as a reminder of the horrors of that time, when the streets are lit by spells, and run red with the blood of Hunter and Mancer alike. The Violet Night Eighteen years ago, the city glowed violet as a powerful necromancer enacted the ultimate ritual. Her army of undead clashed with the Witch Hunters in the most violent event since the Uprising. The blood stains the mind of Prince Destrivel Orophos still. It is, and has been ever since that night, his aspiration to become a Witch Hunter. But he is a royal, and worse, a male, destined to be married off as a trophy. His warrior training meant little in this time of peace, and his souls seeks something to break the shackles of duty and station that have held him all these years.

Book Synopsis Religious Rivalries in the Early Roman Empire and the Rise of Christianity by : Leif E. Vaage
Download or read book Religious Rivalries in the Early Roman Empire and the Rise of Christianity written by Leif E. Vaage and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2010-10-30 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious Rivalries in the Early Roman Empire and the Rise of Christianity discusses the diverse cultural destinies of early Christianity, early Judaism, and other ancient religious groups as a question of social rivalry. The book is divided into three main sections. The first section debates the degree to which the category of rivalry adequately names the issue(s) that must be addressed when comparing and contrasting the social “success” of different religious groups in antiquity. The second is a critical assessment of the common modern category of “mission” to describe the inner dynamic of such a process; it discusses the early Christian apostle Paul, the early Jewish historian Josephus, and ancient Mithraism. The third section of the book is devoted to “the rise of Christianity,” primarily in response to the similarly titled work of the American sociologist of religion Rodney Stark. While it is not clear that any of these groups imagined its own success necessarily entailing the elimination of others, it does seem that early Christianity had certain habits, both of speech and practice, which made it particularly apt to succeed (in) the Roman Empire.
