Book excerpt: Unique in the world, the project MOTTLES takes place in the main European areas at highest and medium risk of O3 injury, relative to human well-being and vegetation impacts, i.e. Southern and central Europe and combines field epidemiology with plant-responses to O3. A standard for forest protection is considered biologically relevant when it translates into real-world forest impacts. For this reason, epidemiological investigations where large-scale biological responses (e.g radial growth, crown defoliation and visible foliar O3 injury) are compared with ambient data in the field provide useful information for establishing the best standards and thresholds for forest protection from O3. Ozone effects on vegetation depend on the air concentrations but also on the O3 uptake through the stomata, i.e. Phytotoxic Ozone Dose above a threshold Y of uptake (PODY). With the effort of implementing permanent new-generation monitoring stations across Europe, capable to return continuous hourly O3 concentrations with meteorological and environmental parameters in real-time, PODY is estimated and correlated to measured forest-response indicators to develop flux-based critical levels (CLef) for forest protection against O3. Based on real-world flux-effect relationships, derivation of suitable species-specific epidemiologically-based O3 critical levels for European tree species represents a considerable progress in the development of methods for quantifying O3 effects on vegetation at the regional scale. This work was carried out with the contribution of the LIFE financial instrument of the European Union (LIFE15 ENV/IT/000183) in the framework of the MOTTLES project u201cMonitoring ozone injury for setting new critical levelsu201d.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropogenic emissions of ammonia cause a host of environmental impacts, including loss of biodiversity, soil acidification and formation of particulate matter in the atmosphere. Under the auspices of the UNECE Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution, around 80 international experts met to review the state of scientific knowledge. This book reports their analysis. It concludes that threshold levels for ammonia effects have been underestimated and sets new values, it assesses the independent evidence to verify reported reductions in regional ammonia emissions, and it reviews the uncertainties in modelling ammonia, both in "hot spots" and at the regional scale.

Book excerpt: This book looks at the sources and composition of the atmosphere and rainfall, with particular attention on acidifying components and those that affect ecosystems. It further widens the subject to look at trace metals. It includes papers on the impact of deposition on soils and forests and the recovery of the natural environment. Work on critical loads makes a contribution to understanding the degree to which deposition must be reduced to limit its impact.

Book excerpt: The chapters in this book present a snapshot of the state of knowledge of air pollution effects at the beginning of the 21st century. From their different disciplines, a distinguished collection of authors document their understanding of how leaves, trees, and forests respond to air pollutants and climate change. Scenarios of global change and air pollution are described. The authors describe responses of forests to climate variability, tropospheric ozone, rising atmospheric CO2, the combination of CO2 and ozone, and deposition of acidic compounds and heavy metals. The responses to ozone receive particular attention because of increasing concern about its damaging effects and increasing concentrations in rural areas. Scaling issues are addressed - from leaves to trees, from juvenile trees to mature trees, from short-term responses to long-term responses, and from small-scale experiments and observations to large-scale forest ecosystems. This book is one major product of a conference sponsored by the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations, the USDA Forest Service Global Change Northern Stations Program, the Arthur Ross Foundation, NCASI, the Canadian Forest Service, and Michigan Technological University. The conference, held in May 2000 in Houghton, Michigan, USA, was appropriately titled "Air Pollution, Global Change, and Forests in the New Millennium". The Editors, David Karnosky, Kevin Percy, Art Chappelka, Caroline Simpson, and Janet Pikkarainen organized the conference and edited this book.

Book excerpt: Presenting the first continental-scale assessment of reactive nitrogen in the environment, this book sets the related environmental problems in context by providing a multidisciplinary introduction to the nitrogen cycle processes. Issues of upscaling from farm plot and city to national and continental scales are addressed in detail with emphasis on opportunities for better management at local to global levels. The five key societal threats posed by reactive nitrogen are assessed, providing a framework for joined-up management of the nitrogen cycle in Europe, including the first cost-benefit analysis for different reactive nitrogen forms and future scenarios. Incorporating comprehensive maps, a handy technical synopsis and a summary for policy makers, this landmark volume is an essential reference for academic researchers across a wide range of disciplines, as well as stakeholders and policy makers. It is also a valuable tool in communicating the key environmental issues and future challenges to the wider public.

Book excerpt: This book provides case studies and general views of the main processes involved in the ecosystem shifts occurring in the high mountains and analyses the implications for nature conservation. Case studies from the Pyrenees are preponderant, with a comprehensive set of mountain ranges surrounded by highly populated lowland areas also being considered. The introductory and closing chapters will summarise the main challenges that nature conservation may face in mountain areas under the environmental shifting conditions. Further chapters put forward approaches from environmental geography, functional ecology, biogeography, and paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Organisms from microbes to large carnivores, and ecosystems from lakes to forest will be considered. This interdisciplinary book will appeal to researchers in mountain ecosystems, students and nature professionals. This book is open access under a CC BY license.

Book excerpt: Rising tropospheric ozone (O3) concentrations pose a critical threat to forest ecosystems. A stomatal flux-based risk evaluation methodology at leaf level was established recently in the context of the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution. This study demonstrates improvement and validation of the stomatal flux–effect approach for European beech and Norway spruce with results from the 8-year free-air O3 enrichment experiment at Kranzberg Forest (Germany). Based on the recommended O3/water vapour diffusivity ratio of 0.663, provisional corrected flux–effect functions for beech and spruce were deduced. Comparison of observed and modelled loss in annual growth under twice-ambient O3 exposure relative to whole-stem productivity under ambient O3 seems to confirm the Convention’s leaf-level stomatal flux approach and the associated response function for Norway spruce up to twice-ambient O3 exposure. For European beech, it must be emphasized that the Convention’s methodology may underestimate the risk for loss in whole-stem productivity.
