Der Briefwechsel zwischen Plinius dem Jüngeren, seines Zeichens, Statthalter der Provinz Pontus-Bithynien, und dem Kaiser Trajan bietet nicht nur Aufschluss bzw. einen Einblick in die frühchristlichen Rituale, sondern soll in diesem Zusammenhang, die Begründungsleistung erbringen, das römisch-christliche Verhältnis zu Beginn des 2. Jahrhunderts aufzudecken. Nach der Darstellung der römischen Religionspolitik seit der Kaiserzeit, folgt der so genannte "Christenbrief" des Plinius, unterteilt in Aufbau und Form, sowie der Versuch, dieses Schreiben als Spiegel für das römisch-christliche Verhältnis zu interpretieren. Danach soll das Kapitel über das kaiserliche Reskript des Trajan Einblick geben, inwieweit der "Christenbrief" als Spiegel des römisch-christlichen Verhältnisses gewertet werden kann. Mit dem Inhalt des Reskript soll darüber hinaus das explizite Verhältnis zwischen Römischen Staat und Christentum herausgestellt werden. Inwieweit der Briefwechsel zwischen Plinius und Trajan das Verhältnis zwischen Römischen Staat und Christentum zu Beginn des 2. Jahrhunderts begründen kann, bleibt indessen abzuwarten.
