Um die Debatte über diese Fragen nachzuzeichnen, soll in erster Linie auf jeweils zwei Primärtexte der beiden Autoren eingegangen werden: Habermas’ Der philosophische Diskurs der Moderne (1983) und Wahrheit und Rechtfertigung (1999), sowie Rortys Kontingenz, Ironie und Solidarität (1989) und Wahrheit und Fortschritt (2000). Daneben sollen weitere Werke beider Autoren einbezogen werden. Thematisch sollen zunächst die Begriffe Wahrheit und Geltung untersucht werden, um dann die unterschiedlichen Philosophiekonzepte und die dementsprechend zugeschriebenen Aufgaben der Philosophie darzulegen. Die zentrale Auseinandersetzung um den Universalismus schließt den Kreis zum Wahrheitsbegriff und vollendet die Debatte.

Der gewählte Bereich sollte Maßgebliches des Bedeutungskomplexes und dessen Entwicklung beeinhalten, beziehungsweise widerspiegeln, während die Zielsetzung, welche meist ohne dadurch an Einfluss zu verlieren implizit vorgenommen wird, wohl Antrieb eines solchen Unterfangens ist. Die von Jürgen Habermas veröffentlichten Vorlesungen „der philosophische Diskurs der Moderne“ beinhalten als solches Ziel seine Theorie der kommunikativen Vernunft, zu welchem seine geistesgeschichtlichen Betrachtungen, die von Hegel bis zu Foucault reichen, hinstreben.Wie aus dem Titel ersichtlich, ist der Bereich, in welchem er seinen Diskurs der Moderne verortet, der philosophischer Überlegungen. Das Kapitel „Eintritt in die Postmoderne: Nietzsche als Drehscheibe“ nimmt hierbei eine zentrale Rolle ein. Habermas entwickelt die Beschreibung der Entwicklung einer philosophischen Problemstellung und deren Lösungsansätze. Es entsteht hierbei eine Geschichte der Subjektphilosophie, in welcher dem Verstand durch gesellschaftliche und politische Veränderungen eine zuvor ungeahnte Bedeutung zukommt, in welcher dieser mit der Anforderung, sinnzuschreibende Funktion zu haben, welche zuvor etwa der Religion zuzuschreiben war, konfrontiert wird. Die Rolle des Wirkens Nietzsches wird hierbei als maßgeblicher Impuls dargestellt, der, nach den Versuchen früherer Denker, diese Problematik durch Verstandeskonzepte lösen zu wollen, den Weg zur Postmoderne bereitet. Im Folgenden werde ich versuchen, Habermas’ Ausführungen zur Funktion Nietzsches in diesem Diskurs nachzuvollziehen. Entgegen dem allenthalben pauschal erklärten `Abschied vom Subjekt' spricht aber vieles dafür, dass es in der gegenwärtigen Sozialtheorie eher um eine Reformulierung transzendentaler Subjektivität geht. Diese Interpretationsthese wirft ein neues Licht auf den sozialtheoretischen Diskurs, der im deutschen Sprachraum in den vergangenen dreissig Jahren vom Gegensatz von Jürgen Habermas' und Niklas Luhmanns Theorien bestimmt war: `Diskurs' und `System' erscheinen als gegensätzliche Versuche, `Subjektivität' und `Interität' in ein theoretisch befriedigendes Verhältnis zu setzen. Wenn aber - so die kritische These dieses Buches - weder die Reformulierung von Subjektivität als `Interität' noch die Reformulierung von Subjektivität ohne `Interität' das Problem der Intersubjektivität überzeugend löst, ist dies ein Grund, neuerlich in eine direkte Auseinandersetzung mit Husserls Theorie transzendentaler Subjektivität einzutreten. Dabei stellt sich heraus, dass Husserls vielkritisierter und -skandalisierter Versuch, den Sinn `Anderer' im `Eigenen' zu fundieren, in der transzendentalphänomenologischen Subjekttheorie durch ein umgekehrtes Begründungsverhältnis konterkariert wird. Bei aller Problematik dieser Theorieanlage - welche nur in Gegenwendung zu den Gewohnheiten der Husserl-Interpretation, vor allem aber auch zu Husserls Selbstinterpretation in den Blick kommt - zeigt sich, dass der phänomenologische Begriff des transzendentalen Subjekts seinen Reformulierungen als Diskurs und als System in mancher Hinsicht überlegen ist.

When looking at pre-modern monarchical societies, one does not expect to observe fundamental dissent directed at the social order as such or at the political system. As a rule, criticism was limited to individual monarchs, their performance and decisions. While discontent could lead to insurrection and rebellion, which normally only culminated in the ruler being replaced by another monarchical figurehead, the subtler methods of voicing criticism were applied within a framework of legality, of a set of customs or of a code of rules of the game and intended to improve the performance of the incumbent or reform his conduct at court. The various forms of verbal or staged censure of rulers in pre-modern monarchical societies are the subject of this volume.
