Book Synopsis Bruc ealles well by : Marc Lodewijckx
Download or read book Bruc ealles well written by Marc Lodewijckx and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this book are about the peoples of North-West Europe in the first millenium AD. They were written by archaeologists from various countries who either reveal the results of their archaeological fieldwork or place the knowledge they have of their particular region in a wider, supraregional context. It is commonly known that archaeologists prefer to devote their time to fieldwork. Considering the limited number of archaeologists, and the multitude of opportunities for fieldwork, this preference is quite understandable, if not even obvious. In addition to this, essay-writitng is a cumbersome and exhausting activity. The warm and enthusiastic response to our request for contributions made it possible ot compose an interesting volume. We hope that this publication may encourage many others to remain active in the field of archaeology, and that the cooperation among colleagues, stimulated by this project, may be continued in the future.

Download or read book Europe in 1848 written by Dieter Dowe and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2001 with total page 1008 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The events of 1989/90 in Europe demonstrated the renewed relevance of the mid-nineteenth century uprisings: both by showing, once again, how a revolutionary initiative could quickly spread through different European countries, but also by calling into question the nature of revolution and the criteria for a revolution's success and failure. To commemorate the 1848 revolution in a spirit of renewed critical inquiry, an international team of prominent historians have come together to produce what must be the most comprehensive work on this topic to date and to offer a synthesis that sums up the current state of scholarly research, emphasizing the many new interpretations that have developed over several decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friedrich Beck was the single most important figure in the transformation of the inept Habsburg military into the modern military state that would wage World War I. He correctly perceived that only an elite body of officers responsible for war planning and preparation could provide lasting security for the Austro-Hungarian empire. After firmly establishing the general staff as an institution, Beck led war planning to counter threats from Russia, Italy, and the Balkans; and spearheaded a vast rebuilding of the rail network. While his rise to power marked a return to the favorite system of military administration of the early Franz Joseph period, Beck proved himself a man with real military ability that revolutionized an army.

Book Synopsis The Life and Death of States by : Natasha Wheatley
Download or read book The Life and Death of States written by Natasha Wheatley and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-13 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Canonical theorists of sovereignty (Hobbes, Rousseau, and others) put the monopoly of power at the center of their definitions. These thinkers abstracted from western European experiences to universal norms. In the wake of their transformative contributions, states that did not fit the model appeared to be underdeveloped or deviant. Labels such as "provisional" or "irregular" rendered them irrelevant to theorizing and, worse, political problems that needed to be solved. One early "anomaly," says historian Natasha Wheatley, was the Habsburg Empire. Layered as it was with imperial, national, and regional sovereignty, its trajectory was not one of progress toward a unitary state. Instead, it encompassed compound polities, or states bundled together under experimental constitutional orders. Wheatley's aim in this book is to theorize from Central Europe to see how sovereignty can be produced in a complex world. In reconstructing this political and legal history, Wheatley treats Austria-Hungary as a crucible for modern legal theory. The serial remaking and eventual unmaking of imperial sovereigny in Central Europe showed how old-world dynastic conceptions of sovereignty were translated into abstract categories of modern legal thought. In so doing, she uncovers the irresolvable tensions and strategic silences in modern political theory: the presumed unity and timelessness of states. Eschewing explanations of "failure," she instead uncovers how the Central European experience crystallized legal questions that would arise again in the era of global decolonization, connecting the story of the end of empire to the birth of new nations throughout the twentieth century. In this respect, the work serves not only as a history of Central Europe but also a "prehistory" of the era of decolonization"--
