Book Synopsis How Black and Working Class Children Are Deprived of Basic Education in Canada by : Bairu Sium
Download or read book How Black and Working Class Children Are Deprived of Basic Education in Canada written by Bairu Sium and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-04-03 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the culmination of twenty-four years of research. It explores the thematic intersections of race, class, immigration, and the potential of building student-centered classrooms. Of course, the building of a truly student-centered is itself a slow and contested process. Over the years, progressive changes towards more inclusive education made by some governments were dismantled by others, and have left disadvantaged children where they were before the study was launched. In the meantime, the system has perfected the process of streaming minority children to dead-end courses that betray the social and economic mobility advertised to them. This book examines the moments and positions of educational betrayal in which racialized and working class students disproportionately find themselves. For many, at that point the only option is to drop out of school and engage in the drug trade or other lifestyles that put them at further risk. This is a longitudinal study of a kind with respect to reform and changes retained in education. It started with eight months observation of a split level grade five and six classroom in September 1986. That was instrumental in identifying the uphill battle that black, working class and new immigrant children and their parents were facing to secure the education they deserved. Through continued reviews, observation and follow up interviews change or lack of it was traced. The results call for urgent overhaul of the way education is provided to all children. The book ends with suggestions to effect change.
Book Synopsis Education and the Social Condition by : Harold Silver
Download or read book Education and the Social Condition written by Harold Silver and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-12-08 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the educational experience of the 1960s and 1970s and to suggest ways of approaching major contemporary themes such as equality, accountability and standards. The author underlines a nineteenth and twentieth-century sociological tradition in analysing education and covers a range of educational themes including aspects of schooling and higher education, education as social policy, knowledge as power, and teaching and adolescence. He draws on the social history of many of the processes, concepts and debates. Parts of the book derive from research into the history and contemporary forms of these problems in the USA. The volume therefore illuminates important contemporary issues in education and society by using historical, sociological and comparative insights.

Book Synopsis New Hope for Deprived Children by : Betty M. Flint
Download or read book New Hope for Deprived Children written by Betty M. Flint and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1973-12-15 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Hope for Deprived Children is the carefully documented story of the development of a group of children from infancy through early adolescence. Exhibiting the effects of severe institutional deprivation in the early part of their lives, these children became the focus of a therapeutic programme within an institution designed to relieve their serious developmental deficiencies. The programme and its effects confirmed the faith of the researchers involved that recovery to a certain degree was possible, even with an institutional setting. Further recovery was effected by later placement in foster and adoptive homes. The lives of twenty-eight of these children have been recorded and the data analysed. This book presents their stories in both human and scientific terms. The guidance procedures and therapeutic intervention were based on a personality theory of 'security,' which allowed the research and guidance team to provide a consistent frame of reference to all procedures designed to move the children increasingly closer to 'normal' behaviour. The range of adaptation to homes and community reflects the individual capacities of each child and the capacities of each family to sponsor such individuality. Both the group analysis and the individual histories provide fascinating information and, additionally, pose many fundamental questions about human development.
