Wenn sie überhaupt nicht existiert, nahm man an, dass es sich dabei um vorübergehende Erfahrungen handelt, die mit dem normalen Entwicklungsprozess zusammen hängen.“ (Essau, 2002, S.11) In den späten siebziger und frühen achtziger Jahren trat mit den ersten ernst zu nehmenden Studien über Depressionen bei Kindern und Jugendlichen eine Wende ein, die die zähe Vorherrschaft des Dogmatismus, dass nicht ist, was nicht sein darf, beendete. Vor allem nach psychodynamischen Modellvorstellungen war die Existenz von Depressionen bei Kindern indiskutabel, da das Über-Ich, das bei Kindern erst in der Entwicklung begriffen ist, eine zentrale Rolle bei der Entwicklung einer Depression spiele. Depressive Störungen im Kindesund Jugendalter wurden generell als Entwicklungsschwierigkeiten eingestuft. Kinder und Jugendliche weisen jedoch in den meisten Fällen eine ähnliche, wenn nicht vergleichbare Psychopathologie wie Erwachsene auf, so dass man kaum – wie einst – von „larvierten“ Depressionen sprechen kann. Da mag es auch nicht verwundern, dass die Aufmerksamkeit gegenüber depressiven Symptomen im frühen Lebensabschnitt während der letzten Jahre enorm zugenommen hat und auch vermehrt literarische Zeugnisse über depressive Erscheinungsbilder bei Kindern und Jugendlichen, sogar aus der Antike, zutage treten. Mit dem DSM-III (1980) stieg die Zahl der diesbezüglichen Untersuchungen aufgrund des wachsenden Interesses an diesem neu aufgeschlossenen Themenbereich rapide an. Allgemeine und bis heute bestätigte Befunde sprechen dafür, dass depressive Störungen Erwachsener in den meisten Fällen in der Jugend bzw. Kindheit wurzeln, dass also frühe depressive Episoden die Wahrscheinlichkeit für eine spätere Depression erhöhen. Wie Nissen schreibt, ist die Depression, „ganz gleich, ob psychopathologische, lerntheoretische, humangenetische oder metabolische Entstehungshypothesen herangezogen werden, eine Krankheit, die schon im Kindesalter latent, als ‚Keim’, als ‚Vorform’ oder als ‚Struktur’ vorhanden ist.“ (Nissen, 2002, S.198) Häufig wird die Depression als die „gewöhnliche Grippe der Psychopathologie“ bezeichnet.
